too many repairs and waiting paint jobs etc to be comfortable and fun. showers by the campsite weren't hot and everything smelled like rotting vegetation, so I guess it doesn't get cleaned often. the locals are almost frantic to sell some contraband they harass you over the fence in the campsite. the great highlight is the drum band that plays in the evening, a really great performance.

It was my first time going to a backpackers and I must say it will not be the last. I really enjoyed and fell in love with the vibe of Bomvu. Especially enjoyed the live entertainment on Saturday night. The Coffee Bay area in its totality also added to the great time I had. I would definitely recommend Bomvu and looking forward to coming back.

Great fire going, huge mazey beer garden area, great home made tequila - try the tomato and the bar-one and live music and drumming session on offer most nights.

But Music pounds until late, you can hear it throughout the bay so not for the light sleepers.

If you like loud music till late (even if the bar is empty and guests try and sleep), dirty lawns full of dogpoo, a place that needs a serious renovation please stay at Bomvu. Obviously they had greater times but staff with filthy clothing and unwashed hair is not the best entry point to feel welcome. Maybe its Coffee Bay as a whole, why would you stay in this dirty, loud and over commercial village while there is Mdumbi around the corner.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else

I visited Bomvu in April 2012 and loved the place. I has a very special vibe. I visited again in 2013 and unfortunately the place just wasn't as good. Whether it was because it was low season I don't know, but us being there seemed a bit of an inconvenience to the staff. It was fairly quiet and they were doing a lot of renovation to the place - though this wasn't a massive inconvenience. The only exception was a lovely American massage therapist & yoga teacher - she was great.

The main problem was that the kitchen was disgusting, really really dirty and unhygienic. We tried cooking in there a couple of times, but frankly were concerned we were going to get ill. The local cooks were defrosting raw chicken in the washing up water and leaving raw meat on top of clean plates which other people would use - they were completely oblivious to basic hygiene. We didn't dare eat the communal meals, and ended up cooking over a fire near the camping area to avoid the grime.

They also have a lot of animals wandering about, but never pick up their droppings, so you're wandering around in their excrement. On top of that the poor horses there looked really thin, and were carrying people way too heavy for them. the young girl that looks after them is just a madam that obviously doesn't really know much about horse care.
