“Beautiful, clean, laid back, friendly and warm”
Reviewed June 27, 2010

I disagree with the previous reviewers. I spent a Friday night in the height of World Cup Fever at Coffee Shack and it was relaxing, sociable but not hectically so. Belinda is utterly charming and welcomed us with a free beer. The prices are most reasonable with an option to donate to an honorable charity. We only stayed one night and we off early, but with many regrets. There is much to do and it seems the owners, in their special laid back way, are super keen to make sure their guests have a good time - whether its sleeping, outdoor activities or partying. I'd love to go back.

We arrived after a harrowing journey on the pot-hole riddled road to the town- and the backpackers was just getting started. Seemed like a great place for high school and college kids, but not if you're arriving late and tired. The staff was nice, but not when we told them we wanted to change locations because it was too loud. Also a bit overcrowded. However, if you're going to party- that's the place. Also really close to the water.

Rooms were large but not very clean. Bathrooms, by contrast, were spotlessly clean. There is a planned activity (hiking, cliff jumping, beach picnic, etc) every single day. There is a free braai once a week and you get every fifth night free. Coffee Bay itself is a charming sleepy community and really one of the most gorgeous areas in South Africa. Coffee Shack is conveniently located right on the beach.

My only complaint about this place is that it is a little too social. When I was there most of the people partying were between 18-20 (drinking age is 18 in SA). If you just wanted to chill out with a beer (and not get extremely drunk) you weren’t welcome. The staff coordinate a number of drinking games which ranged from slightly entertaining to insipid. One evening there, my fellow dorm-mates and I decided to go to bed on the early side (around 23h00) and the bartender actually opened our door without knocking to get us up to join a drinking game! When we said no, he was extremely rude to us.

In sum, if you’re in Coffee Bay to sleep by day and pound shooters with teenagers at night, this is the place for you. If you prefer to have a quiet evening or two, I would try another place. If you're somewhere in between (as I was) it's a tough call.
