“Get Lucky at the Lucky Bug”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2012

We recently stayed at THE LUCKY BUG in Nuevo Arenal ,Costa Rica for four nights. The accomodations are very unique and colorful and as a bed and breakfast very inexpensive. We stayed in the Butterfly Room which had hand painted touches of what else butterflys. Monica the owner and chef is very warm and accomodating and makes a terrific breakfast as well as dinner. She is originally from Germany and her schnitzel comes in three varieties all of which are delicious. In addition she can steer you to all the local attractions such as what to do in Arenal and the local attractions around Lake Arenal which in itself is breathtaking. Off season rates are around $80.00 per night including breakfast which is an outstanding value. We have been to Costa Rica three years in a row and will return to this beautiful country and The Lucky Bug in the near future.

Room Tip: We enjoyed the Butterfly room but all the rooms are charming.

We arrived by car on a stormy night in August (rainy season). As soon as we entered the property, we were greeted by a fairy-tale-like driveway with lighted toadstool lamps leading the way. The owners (Monica and her daughters) showed us to our room, which was so cheerfully decorated with animal motifs (even the bathroom was a pleasure to go in!) that all our stress went away. We fell asleep to the sound of cicadas and birds and frogs. In the morning, sunshine having returned, we walked over to the breakfast patio (next to the gift shop) and enjoyed a sumptuous breakfast overlooking the property's private pond. The owners have really created an oasis here in Nuevo Arenal. The gift shop is a pleasure to browse, and Monica herself creates miniature fiberglass/resin lamps (miniatures of the driveway lights) that you can buy and take home as souvenirs. Since we are late sleepers, we liked the fact that the owners' residence and the breakfast area were away from the lodging building so that we could sleep in and not be under pressure to wake up early for breakfast just to be 'socially correct'. (In fact, the owners assured us we could have breakfast in the afternoon!) Overall, a great place and great value; we would gladly have stayed a few more days.

P.S. A car (especially a 4WD) is recommended for Arenal if you want to go exploring the area at all. We tried to visit Rio Celeste but it turns out it required quite a bit of driving over dirt/gravel roads so we didn't attempt it with our middling sedan. (The locals say it could be reached from Nuevo Arenal via a dirt road to San Rafael/Guatuso--or just join a tour from La Fortuna and leave the driving to others).

P.P.S. The German Bakery pastries weren't that good (at least on the day we visited) in spite of the numerous road-side ads. Moya's Restaurant was a great choice for dinner.

We ate at the restaurant here several times on our last trip here and, looking over the little pond toward the B&B, always thought it looked like it would be a nice place to stay. We ended up staying here one night when there was a problem with the house we had rented. It ended up being as good as it looked. Our room was bright and comfortable, with a really nice bathroom. Sitting on the balcony in the evening and the following morning watching and listening to the birds was especially relaxing after the glitch in our original plans. Monika and her daughters were really nice and helpful and breakfast was quite good.

So happy we chose Lucky Bug. Less than 3 hour ride from Liberia Airport, which was so easy to go through. Monica and daughter Alex were a delight. Delicious food! Our room was spacious with hot water and balcony. Waking up in the morning hearing bird calls and howler monkeys was great. Beautiful gardens on walk from room to restaurant. Enjoyed breakfast with hummingbirds and many, many beautiful birds eating from nearby feeders. While eating and overlooking their lake i saw a kingfisher catch a fish. Visit the well stocked gallery if you're just passing by. Close to Arenal Volcano and La Fortuna waterfall. We did the Sky Tram/Trek ziplining. We're sorry we didn't stay another day, but their advice to head to Manuel Antonio was a winner and we loved it there.

Room Tip: Butterfly room and balcony, view of lake, next to rain forest.

We happened upon this charming place with a tip from Lonely Planet. Run by Monica, this is a one-of-a-kind bed and breakfast! The "front" of the establishment is a restaurant and art gallery next to the road along Lago Arenal. Out the back deck/terrace of the restaurant is a sumptuous view of a small pond in the regenerating rainforest. It is quiet and so, so relaxing -- one could sit and sip coffee or enjoy a meal for hours watching the birds fly up, or watch the lighting change over the pond. Food in the restaurant is mostly locally grown and delicious. But that is just the beginning -- behind the pond is a building converted from a horse barn where Monica and her daughters have created an art gallery also providing rooms for guests. The place is fabulous! Color in all directions, with art embedded in tiles and on the walls, and in the furnishings. It is a celebration of Costa Rican art with European sensibilities. Everything is spotlessly clean and the bed was wonderful -- what better way to sleep with the sliding glass door open, a ceiling fan above, and listening to the light rainfall and birds outside. A little slice of paradise in an otherwise scenic pastoral setting in the Arenal area. Monica is a charming hostess who easily friends her guests. This is a no-brainer.

Wow what an amazing find this is. Monica and her girls are some of the most creative people.
True Artists. They created a piece of heaven and share it with you in every sense of the word.
When you enter their property, you have arrived home. You will receive all the comforts
a traveler needs. We stayed in the frog room and we thought it was the finest. Clean and Roomy, King Bed super comfortable- enchantingly decorated, nice large bathroom, good coffee for your first cuppa.
The views from your terrace are breathtaking or just sit up in bed with a coffee, you are at tree top level for great birdwatching. They honor nature as we do and somehow that is hard to find these days. For this we are thankful.
Their home cooked meals are over the top delicious.
This Family makes you part of the family. My only regret is we had to leave.
A huge hug to Monica, Alex and Catherine,
Kathleen and Chuck

This gem of a place made us wished we'd booked more time here. Monica, the owner, and her lovely daughters are what really make the place wonderful as their artistic touch is evident in the rooms, the gardens and landscape, the meals, everything here. They have planted a beautiful garden all over the property which blends together nicely with the natural forest surrounding them, which, together with a good sized pond just below the open air porch which serves as the principal eating area for guests, makes a wonderful habitat for the countless species of colourful birds that habituated the spot. Personally I loved the real artwork of every description all over the place. The food was wonderful and we really felt a nice and easy connection with this family run place and these women.
