“Great riding stable!”
Reviewed March 15, 2014

Most public riding establishments have old nags riding nose to tail. Alesandro operates a horse rescue. His family runs the restaurant. His sons are horse trainers and farriers and his daughter was our guide on a great ride through the area surrounding lake Arenal. We own horses at home and I guess she could tell we could ride as she told us where the best places were to go gallop is if we wanted to. The views are amazing. The horses are very well trained and appear to be bomb proof as a pack of about 6 dogs came out of nowhere and didn't bother the horses at all.
Our guide served us coffee, her dad showed off his amazing dancing costa rican stallion, and her daughter who was maybe 3 years old was as cute and welcoming as anyone could ever be. Don't forget to bring her some candy :)

Seeing a dancing horse may be a once in a lifetime event for most, seeing one in Costa Rica is a great treat. The family owned and operated store next to a stable brings joy to your stay. The moves the horse makes inspires the crowd to clap and smile.

On the recommendation of the homeowner we rented from, and many of the guests who signed their guest book and mentioned it, we booked lunch and an afternoon ride at El Establo for my wife and I and our four daughters (aged 11 thru 19). Despite all the many exciting activities we have done on this wonderful tour of Costa Rica, horseback riding with Carlos as our guide has been the most talked about and favorite activity! The ride was very scenic with spectacular views of lake Arenal and lake Couter (?). We had a mix of experienced and beginning riders, and the ride was enjoyable for all levels. Charming Carlos (16) was a great guide and truth be told, our daughters were smitten by him (and I believe the feeling was mutual!), his personality was as good or better than his riding and roping skills, and his singing was pretty good too! The very best part of the afternoon was visiting with Carlos on the ride, his sister and her beautiful baby girl, and their parents in the restarant area of this wonderful family operation. Alex, the father, spent a lot of time talking with us about his ranch and the local area and people, and his wife was a great cook. We were charmed, and highly recommend this activity if you are staying in this area.

Room Tip: We did not stay in the accommodations offered at El Establo, but ate in the open air restaurant and...

we are retired Australians travelling the world, we have stayed in around 40 hotels this year alone. This El Establo was the worst place we have stayed. Apart from the noise from traffic going up and down the hill, appliances not working, poor food and no coffee/tea making machine in room as promised in the brochure. When it came to sleeping, I pulled the top pillow from bed to find 5 BABY RODENTS curled up in the bed. We did not stay the intended 3 nights and the manager who was to speak with us in the morning was unavailable. They have ignored our communications to them and I imagine they are hoping we will go back to Australia and forget all about it, this was not a cheap hotel.
The view and location are certainly spectacular but that's it! If you can't mountain climb the only way to your room is wait for the shuttle bus.

Room Tip: Don't go !!!

We stayed at this establsihment for the sole purpose of horseback riding and what an adventure it was! The rooms, perched on a hill, were clean, newly renovated (they are still working on it), and very cozy. The beds were comfy and the bathrooms were very clean with warm showers. Our cabana slept up to 5 people (room 4 is the largest), and had an efficiency kitchen with a private outside seating area. Although the kitchen was not quie finished, the tile work was beautiful and the room nicely decorated. We were very comfortable here. The cabanas were joined by common walls, and there was a very large tiled open area in front of them with a beautiful view of Lake Arenal. The restaurant was amazing and all the food was wonderful (this woman knows how to cook). They apparently make their own cheeses, and their milk is fresh (they have cows). I highly recommend the cream of mushroom soup. Alex and his wife made us feel so at home, and when she discovered that my son was a vegetarian she started making some special dishes for him. It was not unusual for us to go down to the restaurant and find my son wandering around the kitchen, lifting the lids of the pots and pans, examining what goodies there were to eat. It was pretty hilarious! Our horseback ride was a real adventure (about 4 hours long), we went to lake Cotor and hung out there, then came back. It was beautiful scenery, overlooking the top of a ridge. Lake Cotor is fed by an underground spring, is heart shaped, and was warm to swim in (although a bit silty on the bottom). Alex, the owner and proprieter of the establishment, took some time out for us and showed us the stable horses, as well as the dancing horses that he is training. We also got to milk the cow a bit (this was not easy, you need strong hands). Our guide, 11 year old Carlos was great at his job, and he and my kids really got along great (they are 11 and 13). Arenal Nuevo is cool and breezy and we fell in love with this place. We will come back again, and ride horses, and swim in the heart shaped lake, and eat freshly prepared, delicous food cooked on a wood burning stove.
