Cathy and John are exceptional hosts. Cathy's pancakes surpassed the standard set by previous reviewers. Our hike with John and his five Great Danes was unforgettable. We left with seven new friends!

We only slept one night at this fabulous place which is a nature park on his own with all the birds you could imagine. We've been for about 4 weeks in Costa Rica and after this break at Chalet Nicholas at the beginning of our trip we never had the chance anywhere else to see that much brids from so close. A real great experience I'd like to share with all of you. And the breakfast is also delicious: a plate of 10 different kinds of fresh fruits and the macadamia pancakes were the best we ever had. An place which I could really recommmend together with the hospitality of the owners. ENJOY !

We stopped here for just one night, but were given the welcome of members of the family coming to stay!! The house and gardens are just beautifull and you can easily spend hours out on the balcony rocking chairs looking at all the birds and the view. Rooms are lovely and homely, the shower the best Ive had in costa rica and the breakfast soooooo yummy, catherine makes a great pancake, the fruit is fresh and delicious. Unfortunatly, all this is second best to the best bit....the 5 beautifull, lovely, gorgeous, friendly Great Danes, we fell in love with them instantly and did not want to leave them. John took us out on a great walk with the dogs through the forests out back, along the river, with the dogs darting around everyway causing choas...it was just lovely. Can not say enough about this place and it will be a highlight if you stay there. Thanks for the stay John and Catherine...and the 5 m's.

My spouse and I loved the location of this simple B&B (the middle of the cloud forest) and the delicious breakfast prepared by John and Catherine. The guided trek through the forest - led by John- was the unanticipated highlight of our stay. A stay at Chalet Nicholas is now "standard" for our trips to Costa Rica.

Chalet Nicholas is perfect place to stay if you are seeking a quiet getaway from the bustle of La Fortuna. Catherine and John are wonderful hosts who have created a lovely paradise of flowers and trees on the edge of a rainforest preserve. We stayed here for four nights and liked it so much that we returned a couple of weeks later for another stay.

The rooms are very clean and comfortable, and the hot breakfast every morning is delicious. There is always a selection of fresh Costa Rican fruits. John and the dogs accompanied us on a few hikes through their property to an adjoining rainforest preserve, and both John and Catherine can provide information about the best hikes and activities in the area. They also are wonderful about making reservations for the local attractions.

We always like to stay at B&Bs, and Chalet Nicholas is now one of my favorites. We highly recommend it.

Our stay here was excellent and allowed us to stay another day in the Arenal region. Excellent views of the lake and volcano (although we could not see the whole cone because of clouds) Reasonably priced and great breakfast. Make sure to have John take you on a hike with the Dogs.

We arrived from Sugar Land, TX as strangers to John & Catherine Nicholas, but we left having made two new friends! Their B&B is a very charming place in a very beautiful setting. Our room was extremely nice and always clean. The breakfasts? Let me just say that Catherine whips up some mean omelettes, and some of the fluffiest hotcakes I've ever tasted! When you visit this place, you'll want to treat John & Catherine like family, because that's the they will treat you. Their Great Danes are an absolute delight. And, seeing some Howler Monkeys just behind their home was exciting. And, finally, when you visit Chalet Nicholas, ask John for the explanation to this final comment: "Across the street you should never!".
