Chalet Nicholas
Ranked #7 of 13 Nuevo Arenal B&B and Inns
Reviewed August 21, 2011

My spouse and I loved the location of this simple B&B (the middle of the cloud forest) and the delicious breakfast prepared by John and Catherine. The guided trek through the forest - led by John- was the unanticipated highlight of our stay. A stay at Chalet Nicholas is now "standard" for our trips to Costa Rica.

Chalet Nicholas is perfect place to stay if you are seeking a quiet getaway from the bustle of La Fortuna. Catherine and John are wonderful hosts who have created a lovely paradise of flowers and trees on the edge of a rainforest preserve. We stayed here for four nights and liked it so much that we returned a couple of weeks later for another stay.

The rooms are very clean and comfortable, and the hot breakfast every morning is delicious. There is always a selection of fresh Costa Rican fruits. John and the dogs accompanied us on a few hikes through their property to an adjoining rainforest preserve, and both John and Catherine can provide information about the best hikes and activities in the area. They also are wonderful about making reservations for the local attractions.

We always like to stay at B&Bs, and Chalet Nicholas is now one of my favorites. We highly recommend it.

Our stay here was excellent and allowed us to stay another day in the Arenal region. Excellent views of the lake and volcano (although we could not see the whole cone because of clouds) Reasonably priced and great breakfast. Make sure to have John take you on a hike with the Dogs.

We arrived from Sugar Land, TX as strangers to John & Catherine Nicholas, but we left having made two new friends! Their B&B is a very charming place in a very beautiful setting. Our room was extremely nice and always clean. The breakfasts? Let me just say that Catherine whips up some mean omelettes, and some of the fluffiest hotcakes I've ever tasted! When you visit this place, you'll want to treat John & Catherine like family, because that's the they will treat you. Their Great Danes are an absolute delight. And, seeing some Howler Monkeys just behind their home was exciting. And, finally, when you visit Chalet Nicholas, ask John for the explanation to this final comment: "Across the street you should never!".

We had a very short stay back in November...wish we could have stayed longer. It was very enjoyable and the surroundings so peaceful. John and Catherine were wonderful hosts and their dogs beyond adorable. We were amazed (as we sat on the porch with the lap dogs) to see all of the brightly colored birds stop by for bananas. It was such a lovely setting and so private. And Nuevo Arenal...just so gorgeous. Catherine showed us around the town to see some land and every place we saw had the most incredible views. We will definitely be back again this year. Thanks John and Catherine. We look forward to seeing you again soon. Mark and Loraine

Chalet Nicholas is definitely one of our highlights of our trip to Costa Rica. Cathy and John made us feel very welcome at their place that is taken care of very well. Cathy prepares the best breakfasts with heaps of fresh fruit, three different types of freshly squeezed fruit juices a delicious omelette with special brown bread from a German bakery or giant pancakes, in our case with blueberry and macademia nuts in it. Our room was spacious and the bed was very comfortable. Before breakfast we sat at least for an hour on the veranda watching the most beautiful birds flying by. John took as for a hike to a forest behind the house. We also got many tips and information on the area. We would recommend Chalet Nicholas for everybody who is looking for personal attention & some quality time/rest in a peaceful place.

Chalet Nicholas is a beautiful location. This bed and breakfast is away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist towns. It's about 40 minutes away from La Fortuna and we would highly suggest renting a car if looking to stay here. Even to the town of Arenal it's about a 25 minute walk. If you enjoy dogs you will love staying here. The owners, Cathy and John, have 5 great danes. The dogs are very well-behaved and came along with us on our hike with John. Cathy made a delicious breakfast. The owners provide fans, but there is no air conditioning. Being so close to the rainforest, it becomes very humid at night. Overall though, the bed was comfy, hot water was fantastic, and the company was much appreciated!
