Do yourself a favour and ignore the tacky signs on the road here. The price was ridiculous for relatively poor quality coffee, tea, juice and pastry. if you really miss your leberwurst i suggest you bring some with you.

Seriously, after all the hype, dozens of signs advertising Tom's Pan German Bakery and Ellen's Gift Shop, we had pretty high expectations---those came to an abrupt fall. First, the staff was less than friendly, though they advertise English speaking, the woman at the counter was not. This is not a deal breaker, though, as we live in Costa Rica and can typically communicate in Spanish. When I tried to ask a question about lodging (they advertise traveller info), she was abrupt and obviously not interested in being helpful.
So, we ordered a couple of pastries, asking for specifics on flavors, ingredients, cost, this seemed to frustrate her further.
End of story, a chocolate croissant and a hard roll were nearly $5, and frankly, awful. Croissants should cost 500colones, vs. 1375colones, be light and buttery, this was dense and gummy tasting, the chocolate was a miniscule amount and in a few clumpy chunks. The hard roll was flavorless and dry, it should have cost about 250colones, instead of 900colones.
Do yourself a favor, don't fall for it. There are some much better options in Nuevo Arenal. My in-laws, who live outside of town, told us that only tourists go to the German Bakery, because locals long figured out their overpriced and below average.

Bought a couple of items at the bakery after seeing a lot of advertisements along the road. It turned out to be worst thing I have eaten in Costa Rica (actually took a bite and had to throw them away!). The guy at the counter was friendly, but the items (not sure what they were called, they had macadamia nuts and coconut) were at least a couple of weeks old.

If you are driving between Arenal and LaFortuna it is a good break stop. Clean bathrooms.
