We had never traveled to Costa Rica before. I had spent a lot of time planning our itinerary and booking places to stay. We were going to Costa Rica in search of property to purchase and later retire to so our travels covered much of the country. We were scheduled to leave our house at 6 a.m. to head to the Kansas City airport to start our journey. At 9 p.m. the night before, I checked my email and was horrified to find that the place that I had made reservations to stay the next three nights had a plumbing issue and had to cancel my reservation at the last minute. Fortunately the place that I had originally made reservations for recommended the Villa Decary so I made last minute reservations for there. I am sure the first place would have been wonderful but I don't know how they could have topped the Villa Decary. The cottages were very nice and very clean and even had fully equipped kitchens. I have had breakfast nearly every morning for the last 60 years but I can't think any that were in the same leaque as those prepared by Elkin. Suzy was great and recommended several great places to eat nearby. I under-estimated the time it would take me to drive from San Jose to Nuevo Arenal so it was getting late by the time we arrived but Suzy called the Gingerbread House and got us in for a late dinner. The Gingerbread House is just a couple of blocks up the road from Villa Decary and is just one of the great resturants that Suzy recommended to us. Another thing that you can appreciate about the Villa Decary is that it has a paved drive and is just off the main paved road. Several of the other places we stayed at in Costa Rica were close to a kilometer off the paved roads and really needed a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get to. Elkin took us to his folks farm and gave us a tour while his mother prepared a local dish. The tour was wonderful and the meal was great. I don't know that I have ever met anyone with more energy than Elkins parents. If you plan to travel to Costa Rica keep these things in mind. 1. It takes a lot longer to get anywhere than what mapquest will quote, the roads curve a lot and you can seldom see more than 10 or 12 car length ahead and the sides of the roads are covered with people waiting for the bus and lots of dogs and livestock meandering the countryside. 2. Be sure to rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle and be sure to bring or rent a GPS. 3. It gets dark very early as in 5:30 or 6 p.m. and by dark I mean really dark so allow plenty of time to get to your destination. 4. If you are in Costa Rica stay over at the Villa Decary and experience a breakfast by Elkin, and then you too can sit down and write a review like I just did.
