“A clean, friendly base for your holiday”
Reviewed September 23, 2012

We just stayed at the Toucan Inn for a week on a B&B basis and it was perfectly adequate for our needs. The transfers and checking-in/out went smoothly and as the hotel is literally 2 minutes from the airport you can start your holiday as soon as possible after you're through customs. (Don't worry, the sound from the airport isn't a problem).

The rooms are basic but clean and functional. We had a corner garden room but they're all very similar. The pool rooms are closer to the pool and restaurant/bar but it's not a rowdy place by any means so I don't think they would be a problem in that respect.

The restaurant/bar (known as Bonkers) was nice and any food we had there was always nice and the staff were always pleasant. Food and drink (esp. water) can be bought cheaper elsewhere but that's probably true of most hotels.

Crown Point isn't a huge place but the hotel is the opposite side to Pigeon Point which is where most people's holiday's will centre. A short taxi ride or a 30/35 minute walk get's you there though.

Overall, I'd recommend the Toucan Inn if you're just looking for a clean, friendly base for your holiday. Say Hi to Mr.B if you go. He's the resident taxi/tour operator and he makes a mean rum punch! ;)

N.B. We were one of the minority using this establishment on a B&B basis (our preference).

The key is not to expect too much from the place as Tobago is classed as a 'developing' country. That said, we had a great holiday. The rooms were satisfactory for comfort, the air-con - well received for the hottest time of the year with none of the thunderstorms as predicted before arriving.

The male staff excel on the evening, very charming and polite compared to the female morning staff who appear a little stern, though who doesn't enjoy working mornings? We strongly recommend the mellow 'Mr B' who frequents the bar as your taxi/tour guide (especially Sunday School). His quiet but strong local dialect maybe difficult for the hard of hearing but we should have heeded his wise words as we were fobbed off by a disgruntled, uninterested driver that was booked through the tour representative's welcome meeting when tired upon arrival at the premises. You will, however, be approached by many touts for tours. Trust your instincts.

The food was plentiful the times we ate there but from an all-inclusive view is limited and could get repetitive if staying for more than one week. Tobagan food generally is quite unhealthy - heavy on refined carbohydrates and convenient fast food served in polystyrene cartons rarely piping hot with fish/meat usually containing the bones. Please try La Cantina down the road as the delicious pizzas outsize the plates they are served upon.

The pool area, although surrounded by lovely vegetation, has no sunloungers and seating is uncomfortable for prolonged periods but the typical Caribbean backdrop that is Pigeon Point (entrance fee required) and Store Bay nearby bear the necessities for relaxation.

The only negative point we have about the Toucan Inn is the lack of evening entertainment on site but we otherwise wouldn't have discovered Bago's Bar as a sunset spot (see photo). People watching serves as entertainment for us

In a (coco)nut shell...Tobago has opened our first door to the Caribbean!!

Room Tip: We would strongly advise to bring some earplugs if you are in a pool room as the hubbub from restaur...

We have just come back from a week stay at the Toucan Inn. We had a fantastic time and we would definitely stay again. Unfortunately, we paid extra for the garden room but we didn't get one. The pool rooms are fine but the bathrooms need updating. Tobago is a great place. I would recommend the BBQ boat trip. Also, we went to a fantastic restaurant called Food 4 u. If you turn left out of the hotel and walk down the road you will reach it, but it's a long walk. The owner offers a free taxi service. It really was magnificent- Tobagan food with great service. We were really glad we visited the restaurant.

This is a cool little intimate hotel within walking distance of festive local bars & restaurants, not to mention the best Beaches on the island!

The staff are friendly, especially the night crew and nothing is too much trouble. Meals are good, but rather boring if you are on an all inclusive package and should you want anything more exotic from the regular menu, such as steak or shellfish, you will have to pay extra.

Rooms need some attention, particularly the poolside ones....the formica is lifting and broken in the bathrooms & shower curtains are old and torn. The rooms aren't sealed properly where the roof meets the ceiling, so no matter how many insect repellents you burn or spray, the mozzies are still going to get you, so be prepared! The BIGGEST disappointment was the lack of Tea/Coffee stations in the rooms! It is impossible to get a hot beverage during the night or before 7.30 in the morning, which is enormously frustrating!!
So I would recommend you take along a little travel kettle and your own tea and coffee.
Thankfully all rooms are air-conditioned.

They no longer have live entertainment or themed evenings, or any other form of night time fun and there isn't even a TV for you Sports fanatics! So if drinking isn't your thing, there really isn't much to do, so take the Scrabble and your '50 Shades of Grey' trilogy ;-) !!
The pool is also off limits from 6pm to 6am, so the only way to cool off is in the shower.

Kids are welcome, but there's zip for them to do!

The pool is clean & sparkling and the outdoor area is very pleasant and well kept with large festive yellow umbrellas, however the chairs are hard with no cushions and there are no sun loungers etc. so it's hard to really relax in the fresh air and sunshine and work on the tan. Another BIG disappointment for me, again reiterated by the other hotel guests, was the lack of anywhere to relax in comfort and escape the heat, as the hotel has no lounge and is totally devoid of any soft furnishings.

The gardens are lush, beautiful and well cared for and the hotel and grounds are kept spotless.

All in all a great little 2* establishment, that just needs a little TLC & a few tweaks to make it perfect.

Mr B, who props up the bar (just sitting, not drinking) most of the day, is seemingly the resident Guide. He is great for the Sunday School Tour and Transfers to and from the beach etc. but as a Guide he is difficult to understand and rather boring. Ask the Hotel to book LESTER for any Tours of the Island as he is without a doubt the BEST...great fun and very knowledgeable. And his Hyundai SUV is new, spacious and the aircon superb!!

When doing the snorkelling and beach BBQ tour, choose the tour that uses the Catamaran, as the other smaller boats, although fast, have limited shade and there is a tendency to get sea sick. If you are doing this tour there is NO NEED to do the Buccoo Reef and Nylon Pool tour as it is included.

Don't book a tour in advance to Buccoo Reef and the Nylon pool, it's much cheaper to pick one up at Pigeon Point.

NB NB. At Pigeon point there are two Bar/Restaurants....the main one adjacent to the Pier is far more expensive than the other one down the beach!!

Tobago is a wonderful destination! The people are friendly and respectful and even women are safe to enjoy themselves without fear of being harassed. Granted, the gorgeous men will come on to you, but they still remain respectful and will leave you alone if you ask them too.

Would I return....ABSOLUTELY! Would I use the Toucan Inn again....ABSOLUTELY....but I'm taking my iPOD, Travel Kettle and a blow-up mattress for the poolside!! Sadly I've finished 50 Shades ;-))

Room Tip: Ask for a Garden Room, they are bigger and away from the noise. Bring loads of Mosquito repellent...

We stayed at the Toucan Inn for three nights at the beginning of August. We arrived after midnight, but we had told them that we would be late - plus our plane was delayed a bit. When we arrived at the site, the office door was wide open, but no one was around. Searched the premise for about 45 minutes - no luck - I mean no one was around, it was rather creepy. A large bat chased us out of the office at one point. Finally found a night worker - I think she had been asleep.
The rooms are reasonably nice.
Air con - which is nice to have for at least the first few days. Bathroom a bit shabby. Also when it rains the water will come in under the doorway. Nice clean pool, and the food at the restaurant is superb. Every meal we had was delicious. Friendly staff too. Other than lax security, a rather pleasant place.

I stayed for 10 nights at the Toucan Inn and 4 nights in Trinidad, and just got back yesterday. All the staff are great Clarke/Lisa/ Shelley/ Andrea and of course Troy who treats all his guests like kings and queens. The owners James and Chris ex British Gas employees I have known for many years since they first built the place in Tobago. I always stay here as its easy to walk to many parts of Crown Point, 6-7 mins to the airport, 15 mins to Store Bay and about 25 mins to Pigeon point beach. The rooms are in need of some redecoration since being built, but they are cleaned every day and its only for sleeping really. I prefer the garden rooms behind the cabanas as these are larger, they do a really good breakfast of full english or local food such as flying fish or saltfish.
Their dinners are also great and I can recommend the Tom Tom Tuna or the Shrimp or Lamb dishes. I can honestly say that you will not be dissappointed here.
Tobago is going through low tourist numbers currently but the island is beautiful and when the arrivals pick up I'm sure the rooms will all be updated.
All I can say is thanks again for a great holiday .....

Room Tip: Garden rooms are larger than the cabanas...

I highly recommend this restaurant and bar. Went there for lunch and ended up going back
for dinner. Service is very good and the food is superb - better than I expected !! I found this
place by accident and would consider this place to stay because it is so close to Pigeon Point.

Room Tip: I think a garden room would be the best
