“Terrific Tobago”
Reviewed October 17, 2013

We have just returned from a wonderful week at Coco Reef. A beautiful location, we had an amazing view from our room ( room 239) . The food was very good, we stayed on a all inclusive package and felt that there was plenty of choice for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Cocktails were served to us whilst on the beach, bottled water was included in the package along with local beer, wine by the glass and numerous other drinks. The staff were just wonderful, nothing seemed too much trouble. The hotel was clean and the gardens were beautifully maintained, there were plenty of sun beds and beach towels provided. A couple of very small moans, an extra couple of towels in the bathroom would have been very nice, when we asked they were given to us, would have been nicer not to have had to ask and free wifi would have been great.
We loved being able to walk to Pidgeon Point and had a lovely evening at Sunday School.

A really great holiday .

My partner and I spent two glorious weeks at this beautiful hotel. The hospitality was outstanding throughout, with staff being friendly and attentive from managment level to housekeeping. We always try to be respectful and polite to all staff, which was always reciprocated.

We were amazed having stayed at a number of 5 star resorts worldwide, as to the unique approach adopted by the manager Mr Feniet and his team who went, over and above to make our stay truly memorable. It was the special unexpected personal touches by the staff often on a daily basis, that totally wowed us and continue to provide great memories.

You could not ask for a more fantastic hotel, with authentic Carribbean style furnishings, private lagoon area with unrivalled views of the Carribbean sea, coupled with a fabulous relaxing lobby area. The list is endless.

We just adored the beautiful artwork throughout the hotel which created a great ambience and each day could not help, but to walk through admiring the stunning manicured gardens!

The general feeling of serentity and relaxed atmosphere within the hotel ,is also one of the ingrediants which made our stay so fabulous!

The buffet breakfast was comprehensive and to a very high standard, accompanied regularly by champayne and of course all under the watchful eye of resident fabulous huge birds!

I would throughly recommened the Tamaras restuarant, Cafe Coco and local eateries too, with staff always happy to advise of local facitities to enjoy . We took fanatastic trips around island and even attended the annual jazz festival, with the assistance of the brilliant Samantha! Absolute fun. The evening entertainment within the lobby, was just right and what we wanted, so we enjoyed chilling out many a night with the other guests.

The gym is well equipped, which I used frequently followed, of course by basking on the beautiful beach for hours afterwards!

The icing on the cake was our stay in the penthouse level Havana suite, renamed the 'Hawthorne suite' by a specially made plaque by staff . OMG it was opulently furnished, with excellent facilities, totally relaxing and indeed an absolutely amazing experience .

We cannot thank enough Mr Feniet, Kirton Sorias , Nicole Bailey (you are a true rare diamond ) and Samantha from the managment team , the fanatstic staff at breakfast, who always had smiles and laughter including Melissa and Angela , housemaids and beach staff including Roshan to name but a few who kept the cocktails flowing.

Coco Reef is a gem of a find for us and one, that we would selfishly like to keep a secret. The truth is we have not hesitated however to recommended Coco Reef to many others since!

Thank you Coco Reef from the bottom of our hearts for, enabling us to experience our bit of heaven for two weeks. This was our first stay and we definately plan to return !

We felt that we were treated like royalty by staff at Coco Reef and that, is a unique experience for us

Totally awsome!

My partner and I stayed at Coco Reef for 2 weeks September/October 2013. My partner had holidayed there before 7 years ago and loved it so much, he wanted to share the experience with me and so I arrived with extremely high expectations! I wasn't disappointed. You couldn't wish for a more beautiful location. The private beach is the most romantic oasis imaginable. We woke up early most mornings and watched the sun come up over the top of the palm trees and other than the extraordinary array of colourful fish in the sea, we had the entire beach to ourselves. The hotel is typically Caribbean in style with wicker furniture and peachy, stencilled decor so don't expect Dubai style glamour here. I'm usually a sucker for glamourous hotel rooms and hi-tech bathrooms but to be honest, they wouldn't sit comfortably at The Coco Reef. I do think the bathrooms could do with an update but the slightly old fashioned colonial style of the hotel suits its surroundings and has an old style charm. We opted for 'all inclusive' and I would thoroughly recommend this option, in fact I would go as far to say that it would be a false economy not to go all inclusive. My partner and I are real foodies and we thought the standard of the food was excellent. The buffet style breakfast was vast with eggs/omelettes cooked fresh to order. Lunch is served by the beach and is also buffet style with a salad bar and fish, chicken or burgers cooked to order on the BBQ and dinner is a lavish 3 course a la carte affair. I cannot recommend the soufflé more highly, there is a different flavour on the dessert menu every night, it takes half an hour to cook but well worth the wait! My only criticism is the lack of air conditioning in any of the restaurants. It was so humid during our stay and we found some evenings we were so uncomfortably hot (men have to wear long trousers in 'Tamaras' restaurant) it was difficult to enjoy the food. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Coco Reef for a romantic beach holiday. There is little entertainment in the hotel other than the (perfect!) beach and there not much to do on the island (although Sunday School is worth a visit and its very cheap to hire a car for a drive around the island - £35 for car hire and £5 for a tank or petrol!) which makes it a very chilled out, relaxing holiday but the one thing that elevates this hotel into a league all it's own is the staff... The warmest, friendliest staff you could imagine. Our special thanks to Trevor and Nicola for keeping the cocktails coming on the beach... We didn't even need to ask for top ups and if Trevor could swim, I think he would have brought them out to sea for us!

Thank you Coco Reef... We will be back!

We stayed at the Coco Reef Tobago for 3 days in October 2013 with our 2 year old child.
The positives for this hotel are the excellent location right next to the airport and the private beach. Also, the staff were generally friendly.

The negatives were that:
1) The television sucked. There were very few channels and even those did not come clearly. So, when we came out of the sun to relax in the room, watching television was not an option.
2) They do not provide wi-fi despite the rather hefty nightly charges.
3) They do not have any child-friendly activities or play area or toys etc.
4) They charge $26USD per child (over 2 years of age) for breakfast. For us, this meant that our 2 year old was eating a single piece of toast for $26. We requested to order off the menu and pay but the hotel would not accommodate any request. To add insult to injury, people coming off the street and not staying in the hotel paid less for breakfast!
5) The pool looked rather dingy and not one single guest ever used it. So, there was no shaded place for kids to swim.

Overall, we would not recommend this hotel as the nightly rate is very high and you don’t get much for your money. In particular, we would not recommend this hotel for a family with young kids.

Yes we paid extra for a first floor sea view suite and we had hoped that it would be nice but nothing could have prepared us for the fact that it was absolutely amazing. The additional cost of the all inclusive package was not so onerous that you could not afford to venture out occasionally although the staff were so good that we almost felt guilty about doing so. The comprehensive unlimited self service buffet breakfast, with eggs cooked before you exactly to your specification, by cheerful staff, coupled with the company of the birds of prey on the balcony which deter the beautiful but cheeky little birds, who would otherwise steal your food out of your hand, combine to make the start to every day an unforgettable experience. The waiting staff were also highly attentive and professional yet friendly and happy.
If you had missed out on fruit at breakfast, those lounging on the beach in the mornings were offered fruit sticks and fruit cocktail coolers which were extremely welcome in the 30 plus degree heat. Similarly, cold bottles of purified water were in abundant supply from the drinks waiters on the beach as were the beers and alcoholic cocktails later. Lunch consisted of another buffet with the added attraction of fish barbequed to order although I could not understand why some people ordered cheeseburgers when the fish is so delicious.
The evening menu was always to a reasonably high standard, although you had to check at the time of ordering whether any vegetables would be provided otherwise you might be left with an excellent but insufficient nouveau cuisine style plate. After all the offerings during the day, the possible limitation posed by the half a dozen main course choices, which when decsribed on the menu, appeared to not have varied much on a daily basis, actually did not cause a problem because each time we were pleasantly surprised to experience a new slant or edge on each dish so that there was in fact more variety than was first apparent. The desserts were lovely and on balance overall the food was excellent.
The hotel would benefit from continued updating but despite this it was clean tidy and still possesses a magnificent charm, surpassed only by the quality and attitude of the staff who were fantastic. Thank you all for a totally brilliant time.

I stayed at the hotel whilst in Tobago on a two (2) days business trip with another work colleague. Upon arrival we were greeted by friendly staff, had a refreshing welcome drink and were soon taken to our respective rooms.

Comfortable and clean room. The view from my balcony was spectacular...

Everything was going good with my stay, until lunch day two (2)... As a vegetarian I didn't expect fresh green salads to be prepared with bits of meat not to be labeled so. Needless to say I had a few mouthfuls of the patchoi salad (unaware of the bacon in it), upon discovering the bacon, well all I can say is that my appetite had gone and I begun to feel sick :(

I enquired from the Restaurant staff why wasn't the patchoi salad labeled "with bacon" and I was told "everyone knows that the patchoi salad has bacon in it"... I replied, don't assume everyone will know.

So what started off on a good note end up with a sour taste in my mouth :(

We were 2 couples staying at the Coco Reef in February.
We paid extra for luxury ocean view rooms - our feeling is if you are on a beach holiday we want to see the sea from our room. We were shown to rooms 146 & 148 - ground floor rooms - they may well have been caves as they were dark, gloomy and depressing. Luxury ocean view, they were not. If you went out onto the terrace and looked to the right, you could see the sea through the wall. All aspects of the room were shabby and tired looking. Bed lumpy and uncomfortable. Bedding grey and old with "bobbly bits" ( my decorating dust sheets are better quality!). Curtains dirty and stained. Towels poor.
We immediately returned to reception to be told the hotel was full and changing rooms wasn't an option, but to ask again the following day.
It took 5 days of persistent complaining before we were finally moved to rooms 153 and 247. I felt so upset.
What a difference! Rooms overlooked the beach and lagoon/sea - although decor was the same as the previous rooms were newer, cleaner, fresher and the bed very comfortable, even the bedding was good!!! We felt our holiday didn't start until we moved rooms - if we had been given these rooms to start with, we wouldn't have had a problem.
Bathroom though basic was functional.
Beach towels provided.
If you want tea/coffee making facilities ask and they will be provided.
You have to ask for the mini bar to be stocked - beer and soft drinks only. We were on A/I - spirits and wine (by the glass only) available from the bar..
A/I deal included buffet breakfast, lunch at the beach bar (limited salad items) barbecue each day..
The dinner was usually a la carte with buffets on some nights ..
The food on the whole was excellent.
Wine by the glass ok.
Bottles of wine chargeable ..
Bottled water unlimited.
Drinks service on the beach was excellent. The cocktails yummy!
Entertainment each evening on the terrace.
Tea and coffee available though the coffee is pretty grim - no speciality coffees here however you can overcome this by asking for a liqueur coffee!!!.
The beach though narrow is excellent - clean, plenty of sunbeds and shade from palm trees and palm umbrellas.
The man made lagoon is safe and good to swim and snorkel with a variety of tropical fish.
If you venture out of the lagoon there are a lot more fish to see but beware the currents.
For a more exciting snorkelling experience go out with Peter on his boat Zoe - he usually arrives in the lagoon at around 8.45 am - he does get booked up so be sure to book a trip soon into your holiday. It's well worth going!
The Sea Horse in at Black Rock is a fantastic restaurant - superb food in a lovely location.
Another must is Sunday School at Buccoo Bay - a great place for "socializin' and "minglin" with the locals dressed in their Sunday best dancing away to the sounds of a steel band and disco - great fun and wonderful atmosphere! Taxi takes about 20 mins.
Tobago whilst not as commercialised and sophisticated as some of the other carribbean Islands is charming and unspoilt.
Although we had a unfortunate start to our holiday, overall we enjoyed our stay at the Coco Reef. Yes, it does need serious updating but bear in mind, this is a poor country and the peoples hearts are in the right place - it is the "best hotel in Tobago".
On balance we thought the all inclusive deal was good value.
