“chill out in Tobago”

Coco Reef is an attractive hotel in a great location, quite close to the airport on the Caribbean side of the island. It is immaculately clean and the room service is a credit to all the staff. The open air restaurant overlooks the beach and the bay. The food is of a consistently high quality, although it does become a little repetitious after a week of the same menus. It would be very easy to exaggerate the positive features of the hotel (fantastic, marvellous etc). Some of the critical reviewers have suggested that the place is "tired". I think laid back is a more apt description. The rooms are excellent, the staff with few exceptions are attentive and only too happy to help. Guests are free to be active or veg out as they wish. If you wish to enjoy a very relaxed environment where time seems to stand still and you can recharge your batteries then Coco Reef is a super option.

Room Tip: Rooms on the first floor enjoy a balcony with great views of the Caribbean

My family and I have just returned from a fabulous holiday at Coco Reef.
I was a little worried when we went as I had looked at this site and seen some bad reports... Well I think they must be on another planet or live in a perfect world with a perfect life and home.
The Coco Reef is great yes if you look you can find things wrong and a bit tried but hey that's the Caribbean! A holiday is what you make it and if you just want to have a moan then stay at

When we arrived from a long flight we were meet with a cool drink and warm welcome the paperwork was done quickly and we were taken to our rooms...we had booked a garden room but to our surprise we had been given a free upgrade to a sea view, there was a fruit basket and a bottle of wine and welcome wrote on the. Bed with flowers.
We were all inclusive so went for some food and a drink, we had buffet the first night and from then on we had A La Carte, and the food was amazing, cooked fresh and there was lots of choice.
In the mornings it was the normal mix of cereals, fruit, breads and pastry's and of course full English with a egg station. (The girls who cooked your eggs were very nice and I did feel for them on how some people spoke to them..). Lunch was BBQ or buffet or you could order toasted and club sandwiches..again lots of choice.
When you are on the beach which is spotless staff came round with water, fruit cocktails, and fresh fruit on sticks and if you wanted anything else then you just had to ask. There was always plenty of sun beds and they were always clean, fresh towels were always ready for you and you could swap them as many times as you wanted.

We went on a great island tour with Daryl and his driver Teato and saw the island and he even took us to see his grandparents. The knowledge they told us was amazing from all the trees and island facts and tales.

All the staff are friendly and helpful.(as long as you remember you manners.)
All in all it was the best holiday I have had..thanks guys..

We've just got back from a fantastic week in Tobago where we stayed at Coco Reef. We were given a drink on arrival and the check in was swift. When we booked the holiday it was for a garden view room but when we were taken to our room there was a wooden sign on the door with our name, on entering the room it was a beautiful sea view suite with petals on the bed saying welcome. During our stay at Coco Reef everything was outstanding the rooms were spotless, staff were always helpful, restaurant whether breakfast lunch of dinner was outstanding and location of the hotel is fantastic. I have been going to Tobago for 5 years and this is by far the best hotel we have stayed at.

We hae just returned from a fantastic 3 week stay in the marvellous Coco Reef. When we entered the hotel it was like coming home. The welcome was exceptional. We were taken into an air conditioned room given a glass of champagne and checked in. The rooms were spotless. Towels etc changed daily. The veiw from our room was breathtaking. The staff, went out of their way to make our stay great. Kirton, the restaurent manager was brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble (sorry if I have spelt your name wrong). Tricia, Gary, Lawson, to name but a few. Words can't describe what nice helpful people these are.
i went out snorkelling on Coco Motion this year for the first time and would thoroughly recommend it.
The locals are all so friendly and island is a joy.
loking forward to returning next year.

Room Tip: A sea veiw room is a must if you can afford it

This review will no doubt upset many people, as many couples return to this Hotel year after year - but my wife and I can only relate our own experiences and we never criticise without cause. We are widely traveled and always review on merit; which gives us the right to criticise where it is warranted.
After looking at the Hotel web site we booked a 'sea view' room. In all honesty - the large palm trees facing our balcony blocked the view to the point where we could see very little of the sea. I can't speak for the suites but I suspect that all the 'sea view' rooms are similarly blighted. Don't waste your money on this disappointing upgrade.
The rooms/decor have been described as 'tired' in some of the reviews on here. I'm sorry but I would describe them as exhausted! We had fittings hanging off the wall in our bathroom and the general decor was very dated, drab and sadly in need of a makeover. Also, don't be surprised to be woken at 6am as the gardeners hack branches from the tops of the palms outside your room. A call to Reception complaining of being woken at such an ungodly hour didn't manage to curtail this activity.
The House Keeping was really bad. We spent a totally unacceptable time either standing at Reception complaining or phoning Housekeeping trying to resolve issues. All we ask on holiday is that the basics are taken care of - particularly when it comes to bathroom towels and replenishment of shampoos etc. Almost every day one or indeed several of these items would be missing and not replenished. Bathroom/Beach Towels were left for replacement in the bath - but seldom were - so we'd have to go to Reception to ask for more.
My wife likes to have massages when they are available, but she most certainly didn't enjoy her experience of the one and only massage she had here. Apart from being very expensive, the massage table didn't have the now standard hole to enable you to place your head in for a more comfortable position. My wife felt that the masseur lacked the acceptable etiquette expected in a resort that claims to provide 'Spa' services. The oils used were exactly the same as those in the bathroom in all the rooms - and after her treatment, when my wife went to shower to remove the various applications - the shower trickled a tiny stream of water. My wife complained in person to the Hotel Manager Eric and he agreed to investigate the shower issue, as surprisingly - he admitted he couldn't remember the last time he had visited there. So much for quality control.
The beach was small but this wasn't really as issue. The lagoon in front of the beach is excellent and does indeed contain a variety of fish. It is very safe for snorkelling. The noise from the gulls who inhabit the rocks that enclose the lagoon is very annoying - and contrary to expectation - I never did get used to it. The beach has a nice quiet little cove to the left side - but you have to get here early to bag a lounger. Staff sometimes visit this area to bring fruit punch and water - but if you are not a regular visitor - you can easily get overlooked.
The food caused us more distress and whereas on the whole it was edible - it was poor compared to many resorts we have visited that offered a la carte service. There was only buffet service in the main restaurant twice a week - the remainder being a la carte service. When we booked we used the Hotel web site in forming our decision and nowhere does it state that there is only two buffet service evening meals per week. This shows a very limited choice in our opinion. Neither of us is particularly a fan of a la carte cuisine - so we tended to eat at the very excellent Cafe Coco near the resort most nights. After we complained to the Hotel Manager about the lack of buffet service - he stated that guests prefer a la carte, which is fine - but it removes any element of choice - and gave us some vouchers to use in Cafe Coco.
The breakfast restaurant is plagued with small birds who will boldly land on your table even as you sit there. Forget about the fact that often someone brings in a hawk and an owl into the restaurant at breakfast....five minutes after they have been tethered to the balcony rail - the little birds return! A very annoying habit the restaurant staff have is to sit people at tables right beside each other (for their convenience presumably) even when the larger part of the restaurant was empty. The tables are incredibly close to each other - so you can forget about any kind of private conversation. The restaurant staff were - with a couple of notable exceptions - surly and arrogant - and on occasion downright rude. Every request seemed to be too much trouble; unless you were one of the 'regulars' and then your every whim was met with a smile. I have seldom come across a group of people who were less suited to working with the public than the majority of management and staff working in the food and beverage department of this Hotel.
Eric the Manager does listen to all complaints - and to be fair to him - he seemed to attempt to make up for his staffs inadequacies wherever possible. However, to have established a rapport with the Hotel Manager through complaining to him almost every day about some disappointing facet of his Hotel is far from ideal.
I must agree that the majority of reviews for this Hotel are very positive. The majority of the people who return year after year are retired, and in the main from the UK. Many of them know each other through their holiday visits to this Hotel and seem to enjoy each others company. They get excellent upgrades and service - so I can't blame them for returning time and again.
My wife and I will definitely not be returning to the Coco Reef Resort and we have stayed in many establishments throughout the Caribbean that would put it to shame in every department; quite how it won the accolade of "Best Resort in the Caribbean" is just beyond me.
On one trip we used the jetty belonging to the Blue Waters Inn at Speyside. This resort looks beautiful and we will be staying here on our next visit to Tobago.
We loved the island and its people. The geography is fantastic, particularly the rain forest, which we visited as part of a day long island trip with Ted's Tours....guided by the amazing Tito.
We went on the Island Girl Catamaran trip and we got picked up at our hotel almost an hour late. By the time we got to where the catamaran was anchored - we got on board at 11am. We got back off the catamaran at just past 4pm...hardly a day trip as advertised. That said - the crew were excellent fun and the food cooked for lunch was fantastic and plentiful. The reefs we visited to snorkel had terrible visibility as a recent storm had thrown silt into the water and you couldn't see the reef even in two metres of water.
We went to the first night of the Jazz Festival at Crown Point - but after the first act the heavens opened and we got soaked to the skin. After an hour standing in the pouring rain - when the rain got even heavier we decided that it would be impossible for any performers to appear in these conditions and went back to the hotel.
Our disaster stay in the Coco Reef apart - the few disappointments we had in relation to activity away from our Hotel didn't erode our overall enjoyment of our visit to Tobago - and we will definitely return in the future.

Room Tip: Don't bother to upgrade to a sea view room. It is a complete waste of money. The garden rooms ap...

As a dual citizen we opted for the "local" rate but it was not better than the rates offered via the internet and the "local" rate gets you a room on the ground floor. If you are standing on the balcony you have a lovely view of the beach and water; sitting you have a view of the garden which is well kept. Breakfast was included in the rate and was adequate; coffee was luke warm and the menu was nothing special with nothing reflective of the island. There is an egg station that does a good job of getting you omelets and eggs anyway you like it. The buffet offered a variation of bacon, breads, cereals and fruit. A short walk around the corner however will fix that with local food spots and a liquor store with a lovely helpful and friendly owner. We didn't eat at the hotel except for the breakfast. The staff was professional and there was an attempt to have some form of entertainment in the lobby most nights for a few hours. wifi is only available in the lobby and is a bit costly and very slow; a good thing if you are trying to keep the spouse out of the office during vacation. We opted to stay in a hotel this trip as it was just the two of us this time; my recommendation is to visit in larger groups and rent a villa. It is not likely that we will be repeat customers. We found it to be overpriced and an adequate experience at best.

Room Tip: book via internet for best rates

In one word - avoid. I am absolutely floored by the positive reviews of this hotel on tripadvisor. We checked in at 6pm, and checked out the following morning (we were due to stay 5 nights). I'm not going to waste time detailing why I think you should avoid the place, or sneering at the guests who write about being blown away by this establishment (they seem to be either serial visitors to the Coco Reef who could never countenance going elsewhere, or people who have never visited the Caribbean before and believe this must be the best on offer).

Coco Reef sums up all that is rotten about Caribbean tourism - and the tourist authorities in Tobago and other Caribbean islands wonder why tourists are deserting the islands and going elsewhere? That's not to say Tobago isn't an amazing place, it most certainly is - see my reviews on tripadvisor for other suggestions of where to stay. It's just this place is a hole, trying to dress itself up as a luxury hotel. Some may be fooled by the vintage white Rolls at the front, don't be.

Take note of the ratings I have given below and this will indicate to you the areas that are lacking:
Service - poor
Value - average
Sleep quality - terrible
Cleanliness - terrible
Location - poor
Rooms - poor
Breakfast - terrible

So I said I wouldn't sneer. But I can't help myself. We left this hotel for other (more serious) reasons, not because of the décor. However it is ghastly. Wear sunglasses at all times - the whole hotel is painted in peach, everywhere you look, all layered with flaccid washed out florals, topped off with wall scencils here and there and flock wallpaper (...in the bathrooms, dear God). If this hotel were a person, it would be a menopausal woman from a West Midlands suburb.

In one word, again I repeat, avoid.
