Coco Reef Resort & Spa Tobago

Reviewed March 11, 2012

We returned to Coco Reef having spent a lovely week there last year and we weren't disappointed! Many of the staff remembered us and we were greeted like long lost friends. Eric the manager seemed genuinely pleased to see us. We were upgraded to a suite with our name on the door, given flowers, chocolates, free internet, tea and coffee machine and 2 meals for 2 at the cafe Coco round the corner. The hotel has had a coat of paint (indeed the painting was ongoing) since our last visit and looked much fresher. The beach and lagoon were lovely as ever. Plenty of sunbeds and shade under the palm trees.
Breakfasts are amazing - you can eat enough for the day! And the presence of Coco the hawk and his friend the Eagle Owl make it even nicer. There is a wide range of salads and other dishes and usually a Barbeque for lunch and dinner was also excellent (although dining late runs the risk of the most popular dishes running out).
All inclusive is the way to go. In addition to the main meals, sandwiches and cakes and ice cream are available most of the day together with as much as you can drink and all manner of cocktails. The measures of spirits are enormous! Cafe Coco is excellent and a nice change from the hotel.
The entertainment was indifferent but it is perfectly pleasant sitting it the upstairs open air lounge after dinner chatting to other guests.
We had quite a lot of rain (although it was mainly at night) but that did seem to encourage the mosquitos so I would take a decent repellent.
The island itself is lovely. Unspoiled, friendly and very safe. We drove round the island which took all day and was quite an experience (beware landslides and fallen trees although in the north west other cars are unusual.) Driving is on the left and not difficult. Petrol is really cheap (around 40p/litre) Do go up to Charlotteville if you get the chance, it's lovely but don't bother with Scarborough - bit of a dump!
Of course the best bit about Tobago is the birds. Around the hotel we saw pelicans, frigate birds, laughing gulls, terns, humming birds, tanagers, antshrikes and of course the bananquits. (Put some suger on your balcony and a bit of banana in the bushes then sit back and watch). On the wires around the airport look out for the little lovebirds (parrotlets). Look in the tree outside room 201 around sunset and you'll see 2 motmots turn up regular as clockwork! We stumbled on Adventure Eco in Arnos Vale, home of Ean McKay where there is an honesty box and you can sit and watch the humming birds feed (5 out of the 6 species on the island) so close you can hear their wings hum. (Ean is trying to train them to feed from your hand). We also saw woodpeckers, motmots, tanagers, antshrikes and of course bananaquits. Ean rings a bell and suddenly the birds appear from nowhere! Whilst out driving we saw more motmots, a Jaquamar, a treecreeper, black hawks, boobys, a brown winged hawk, chachalacas, orange winged parrots, and best of all an osprey carrying a fish.
We will definitely return I've started saving already!

The area is very safe - I went running every morning round by the airport and although the source of some amusement, all the locals waved and said hello.

Room Tip: Rooms on the store bay side are quietest (except around carnival when they party on the beach!)

There is something quite charming about this hotel. It is not what one would expect from a 4/5 star hotel, but once you get over the fact that the rooms look like something from the 1980's and the bathrooms are more 3 star than 4, it is a relaxing and laid back place to stay. You do have to get use to the "laid back" attitude, but it is the caribbean.

The service is not always brilliant and there is a fair bit of teeth sucking, but there are lots of exceptions - such as the lovely lady at the egg station in the morning, the girls at the beach bar, Natasha Adams who is a star. On the whole the staff are very well intentioned but we got the impression that they lacked experience and maybe needed a little more guidance and this did not distract from our enjoyment of our holiday at Coco Reef.

We went half board which was a first for us, and I am glad that we did as the only other places to eat locally seemed to be fast food places which did not appeal. Breakfast is good with lots of fresh fruit, choice of cereal, bacon, sausages etc and the amazing egg woman. There was often a long queue and it might be a good idea to have two egg stations. Lunch seemed to mostly be fried things and chips. There was a buffet dinner 2 of the 7 nights we were there, which again had a lot of fried things, but the other nights there was a choice of meal which was generally very good. The rum punches are amazing and perfect for sunset!

We had paid for an ocean view but the first room we were given was a very dark room on the ground floor overlooking the swimming pool and with hardly any view of the sea at all. We were moved (I think the fact they had actually lost our cases at this time helped our move!) to another room, still on the ground floor but on the Store Bay side of the hotel. This was a much better (and quieter) location, although for a proper sea view you really need to be on the first floor of the hotel.

There is a small and perfectly formed gym which my husband and I had to ourselves every morning, two running machines, two cycles and some weights and resistance machines. If there had been more interest amongst the guests then it would have been crowded.

There are some things which do need updating and fast. The sheets, blankets and pillows were clean but all well worn and a bit threadbare in places.

The beach was well looked after. It is a little small and can be a bit noisy. There is an area towards the Store Bay side that was relatively quiet. The beach shop will loan out masks and snorkels and snorkeling in the lagoon or just outside is lots of fun with lots to see. For an exciting snorkeling trip I would recommend going out on the speed boat Zoe with Peter. He has been conducting snorkeling trips since 1986 but still has a childlike enthusiasm which is infectious!

We booked the trip two weeks in advance and were there over new year - and this is the only reason I have rated the value as terrible! It was a very expensive time to go and we paid over the odds. However, I have seen some very reasonable all inclusive deals to Coco Reef being advertised since we got back, and I think we would go again. It was a really relaxing and fun place to stay.

We returned to the Coco Reef having first stayed there some three years ago. We were upgraded to a suite and treated brilliantly by the friendly staff. Everything was exactly as we remembered from the well looked after rooms, the food and the lovely lagoon. The first week was only part full and we had the place almost to ourselves. The second week was half term and there was an influx of reasonably well behaved children. Although we have no problem with children we did expect this hotel to be mainly adults. The lagoon was transformed into a shipping lane with pedlos and canoes etc. Must remember not to go in school hols. Entertainment was ok but not as good as previously. Still brilliant and we would go again. Make sure you go with Virgin to get the extras.

Room Tip: Go a second time and you could be upgraded.

We stayed from 2nd to 16th February, 2012 at this wonderfully located hotel situated on an exceptionally clean beach, within a safe logoon shelving very gently to rocks where clients could stand knee deep and watch te multi coloured fish.

The staff, under guidance of General Manger Eric, were some of the most friendly we have ever encounterede on our many world wide travels. It was my birthday whilst away and upon
our arrival I was greeted with Birthday Wishes prior to even booking in. Upon reahing our suite the bed had been decorated wit petals and palm leaves.

The suite was exceptionally clean, spacious, with wine and fruit awaiting us. The suite ad a king size bed, the bathroom had two wash basins, a shower, individual towels, also beach towels. Towels were normally changed daily.

Meals were very good. Breakfast self service in the main restuarant. Lunch self service in the beachside restuarant (where you could elect to have evening meal in a more casual way). Dinner in main restuarant with a modest dress code. The menu was quite varied but may not have been so Carribean as some other islands. The staff were superb and loved to have banter with clients. Their sense of humour was brilliant.

We were exceptionally fortunate to have Virgin Holiday's rep Natricia who took more than a personal interest in her clients. Well done!!!!

Close by were a bank, (better exchange rate) a small flea market, some restuarants a taxi
rank, (better book through hotel).

For wild life lovers try to book a trip with Peter Cox whose knowledge and courtesy are second to none. The island is very safe and varied landscapes. Roads not the best but you
could drive yourself, although I think the driver would lose out. Hire a taxi for the day to enjoy
the nvironment and get more information. The price is very reasonable).

We very seldom go back to places as there is a whole world out there. Coco Reef certainly
has enticed us break this tradition.

How much do we mean to Coco Reef? A lot believe me.

Room Tip: Do homework before booking

We stayed at thie hotel 9th -23rd Feb.

Location: Excellent. Private beach protected by a man made break water approx. 100yds out. This provides very calm waters within and shallow waters safe for all levels of swimmers and guests with children.
The gardens approaching the Hotel are beautiful.
Yes the hotel is only five minutes from airport but there is no aircraft noise to speak of.
There are several restaurants outside of the hotel .

Accomadation:Rooms, After hearing complaints from other guests can be hit and miss.
Patio doors are not very secure. Bathrooms are very tired.
Air con works but vey old dilapatated units.
There is a fridge in room. You will need to ask if you want Coffee /tea making facilities in your room and water at front desk.
The maid service is excellent, very clean rooms, towels replaced always and a turn down service.

Food: Main restaurant very nice choice of food, well presented and the menu reading itself ,describes your chioces with a very obvious passion.
You must also take advantage of using the hotels other restaurant away from the hotel ' Coco Cafe. 5 mins walk away and very good.

Bar: Only the beach bar and another one that only opens in the evening called Bobsters.
It is in a small seating 14 people but air condtioned. All the bar staff approach this bar which is small ,to order drinks for guests and bring in dirty glasses straight on to the bar.
However, there is no actual bar that you can sit up at and communicate with fellow travellers. Most drinks are done by waiter service.
There is room in the huge open planned lobby should one be built. It would provide a focal point

Entertainment: Attempted but I am sorry nothing to rant about and is not on every night.

Staff: Overall are excellent. Very helpful and for the most friendly and happy.
If you are with Virgin - Nitricia the Virgin Rep was without doubt the best Rep I have encountered on holiday and is a credit.

Overall a very good holiday. The hotel itself is a beautiful building but needs alot of work doing to it.
I would consider returning , as many others have done on several occassions but it needs a good revamp. The hotel attracts mainly older travellers. There were a couple of families there but it was half term .
A hotel that was the best in 2003 I would of thought would make every attempt to maintain that Title sadly this is not the case.

Room Tip: Top floor Reef rooms near stairs constant air con noise 24/7 from kitchens behind.

We stayed at Coco Reef from the 2nd – 16th February and found it to be one of the best resorts that we have stayed at in the Caribbean.
Its size (135 rooms) and location, on its own uncrowded private beach, make it a perfect place to stay and to meet some nice people in the process.
A two minute taxi ride from the airport and you reach the hotel with its long drive and splendid gardens. The check in is quick and efficient and, although the bedrooms could do with a freshen-up they are spacious and comfortable.
The beach and lagoon are a dream. Calm seas make it ideal for swimming and the hotel canoes, snorkels and peddlows give the children plenty to do. Sun beds are plentiful and there is plenty of shade on the beach. The pool is quite small as most people seem to prefer the lagoon.
The hotel has two restaurants, Tamaras and Bacchanals. Tamaras is open for breakfast and dinner and Bacchanals open for lunch daily and for dinner 4 or 5 times a week. The food in Tamaras is excellent - good quality a-la-carte dining on five nights with a buffet and roast two evening a week. Lunch in Bacchanals consists of hot and cold dishes with an excellent BBQ serving fresh fish, ribs, burgers and hot dogs. Unfortunately, when they are open for dinner, they tend to serve the same food as Tamaras. The only difference being the dress code.
We solved this, however, by visiting the hotel-owned restaurant Cafe Coco on several occasions by way of free vouchers obtainable from reception. They serve anything from pizzas to steaks and is a ten minute walk from the hotel.
The General Manager, Eric Feniet, is the most high profile Manager we have ever met and is constantly walking around the hotel, grounds and beach talking to his guests and solving any problems. He even appeared, with a gardener, outside our apartment to supervise the chopping down of some bushes to give us a better sea view! He holds a weekly cocktail party as well so that everyone gets to know him and his Managers.
Thanks Eric for your attention to detail and for solving the couple of small problems that we had.
The staff are generally very good and we would especially like to thank Gary and young Amanda for their smiles and good service.
To sum up. Certainly one of the best and friendliest hotels that we have stayed at in the Caribbean and a certainty for a return visit.
