“A good hotel in a great location”
Reviewed January 16, 2012

Our fourth visit to the Coco Reef, and the hotel is still good. There's always room for improvement, and the management recognise this and have been very busy with the paint brushes and refurbishing the beach equipment!

This beautiful hotel seems to divide reviewers, with some very negative comments balanced by many positives from repeat guests.

Is it the best hotel in the Caribbean? Probably not. Is it a comfortable, relaxed, beach-front hotel in a good location? Definitely.

Good points:-
- Location
- Size
- Responsive management
- Facilities
- Beach
- Warm welcome

Areas for improvement:-
- Rooms feel dated (particularly bathroom and availability of power points). But are clean and well maintained
- WifI is expensive and unreliable

Negative points:-
- Lunch buffet choice has reduced
- Reception staff are either under-trained or not interested in customer service

Will we go back? Definitely

Room Tip: Beach views are good. Poolside garden rooms have less privacy

My husband, son (aged 11) and I spent two weeks at the Coco Reef over the Christmas period. It was actually our 5th visit to the Coco Reef but we hadn't been since our son was 6 years old. It was like coming home when we arrived at Reception and the hotel was beautifully decorated for Christmas with sparkly lights everywhere. As others have commented, the lagoon setting is beautiful, the staff were so friendly and courteous and, actually, the food was a lot better than I remembered. Our Virgin Holidays Rep, Natricia, was absolutely wonderful and helped us to arrange trips to Trinidad, the Rainforest, Speyside, Jeep safari etc all tailored to our specific needs. Special thanks also to Ellis, Mr Chung and all at the Dive Centre - my husband and son did 3 assisted dives and my son is now absolutely hooked! I also had a fabulous facial in the Spa.

Our room was very spacious although the bathroom was a bit small for the 3 of us. We also had a tap problem and the maintenance men were regular visitors until my son found the knack. We loved watching the birdlife in the garden from our terrace and were so happy that a banaquit had actually made a nest on our patio.

I thought the housekeeping staff did an excellent job with our room - we were out and about so much it was often a bit messy! Just on one day, the room never got cleaned at all. Odd because we left for the Rainforest at 6-30am with the amazing Kelton and I placed the "Service" sign on the door. When we returned at 12-30pm the room hadn't been cleaned so we showered and changed and went diving. We returned at 6pm and the room still hadn't been cleaned. So my husband called Reception, explained we would be going to dinner at 7pm and please could the room be cleaned then. When we returned c8-45pm - still not cleaned. so, being a bit fed up by then, I took matters into my own hands, went to the service cupboard, borrowed a broom, mop etc and swept and mopped the floors and cleaned the shower myself. (Whle my son can go on sports tours and happily not shower for a week we had been in the rainforest and it wasn't a walk on the pavement). I then had fresh towels delivered and felt a lot better. Eventually, someone did come to clean but it was 9-45pm and after all the physical exertion and great food and wine in Tamara's I was asleep!!

Other slight issues were receiving the wrong orders on a couple of occasion and the pre-dinner drinks service being a little on the slow side but we loved it and will definitely be back. We also loved the low-key Christmas celebrations, got a great picture of my son liming on the beach with Santa, but I suspect it may have been a bit too low-key for some? Our beachside Christmas Day lunch of sweet potato pie and callaloo with wine will be a favourite memory for many years to come.

Room Tip: I thought the garden view rooms made a nice change from the beach. We used the Hummingbird Suite on...

Positives:
beautiful setting, lovely bay with clear water.
fabulous snorkelling from the beach
lovely white sandy beach
5 minutes from the airport
rooms are spacious and clean although very dated
excellent evening entertainment

Negatives:
poor service in restaurant and beach bar
pillows in bedroom like a sack of spuds
some staff not as friendly and helpful as others
food is average and very repetitive

Tobago is a lovely, unspoilt and clean island well worth a visit. Coco Reef is one of the better hotels, but still needs a little updating and staff training. Gary who works in the dining area is superb, he will make your stay memorable with his charm and wit and excellent service. Eric the manager is very helpful and will deal with any problems quickly with good customer care.

Room Tip: although dated the rooms are extremely spacious and very clean which is the most important thing

My son and I spent a week at Coco Reef in August, I was very impressed with the ambiance of the hotel. The meals were great, room service was excellent and of course the clincher was the private beach, my son had a blast. The staff were pleasant, courteous and very helpful.I intend to go back for Carnival.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the sea are best.

Spent two weeks at Coco Reef November-December 2011, the first thing to note is the incredible staff, courteous, helpful in all ways, a friendly atmosphere. The food was somewhat repetitive despite Eric's humourous attempts at making the dinner menu interesting, there could be some injection of different types to add something. Rooms are great, the beach ideal for kids, older people, nervous swimmers, extremely well protected by the artificial reef and clean. Beach service was outstanding (thanks Angela). The biggest drawback in this internet age is the paid yet very poor wireless internet service. This needs a drastic upgrade and should be complementary (although we all know it's included in the already very high room rates). On the whole a pleasant experience for one who is not a "resort" person. After six days a car rental gave some freedom from the confines of the resort and immediate area and that made the vacation more enjoyable.

Room Tip: Some "ocean view" is a view of a lawn, wall and then the ocean, not the beach.

The beach front of this hotel was great. It is suitable for older people and young kids. The hotel is located close to alot of restaurants and beaches within walking distance if you don't want to rent a car. However, the rooms were terrible. There was poor lighting and they were outdated with leaking taps not what you would expect for the price. We had a garden view of a fence. The food is really expensive and I recommend that you eat elsewhere. It is alot cheaper. Also there is no variety with breakfast so after 2 days you are going to get fed up. The positive is that the beach is so nice you proably would not have to go anywhere. I don't think it is value for money. You can rent somewhere else and use the extra money for a car.

We went for a week in Tobago, and stayed here at Coco Reef.

The hotel was a stand out from all the other hotels on the island. We loved the building, the rooms, with amazing ocean views, the excellent private beach, and great staff.

All in all a thoroughly enjoyable stay and I would certainly recommend this hotel if you are visiting Tobago, which is a lovely, unspoilt island with some great beaches and a typical Caribbean laid back feel to it.

We loved lunch by the beach, and drinks in the gallery, and the waiter on the beach was really good, as was steven at front desk.

Suggestions:

-cushions on the beach beds would really take things up a notch
- breakfast egg lady always had a queue, put two on the egg station and all will be solved

Overall, highly recommend!
