Conservancies in Kenya are the way to go; protecting the extraordinary wildlife whilst giving the local community an income, together with education on the interaction between the two.
More wilderness, less vehicles, but all of those visiting getting a chance of lifes most breath taking experiences.
The local guides are very well informed and their passion for this conservancy leaves you with SO much to think about when you head home to your busy lives.
Expect to be delightfully exhausted with early drives, late afternoon drives and night drives.
We had an overview of the importance of the people and wildlife living together sustainably, visiting the Naboisho Conservancy only reinforced that lesson. There was so much more wildlife here than the National Reserve area, and the people were so nice. I can't find the site specifically for Basecamp Wilderness, so I am leaving my review here. Even with all of the luxury offered at other camps we visited, my favorite camp was Basecamp Wilderness. I felt like I was part of something instead of just visiting. The evening fire with stories and singing was my favorite evening. Sitting in my tent watching elephants, zebra, wildebeest, topi, and tons of birds was amazing. I highly recommend getting away from the crowds and experiencing this area.
Outstanding conservancy with the options of doing walking safaris and night drives. Saw the big five (minus rhino which is not present in the conservancy).
We visited Naboisho conservancy for 3 nights. Did game drives and a night game drive. Highlight though was our walking tour that we did. Saw cheetahs, giraffes and ostrich on foot.
We visited Mara a few times before but opted for conservancy this time since it's off season and accommodations in conservancy are more affordable.
Strongly recommend for anyone planning to 2nd safari to Mara
This was the highlight of our safari tour. The tour was wonderful and in our 3 days there we saw everything. A wonderful jeep driver, beautiful scenes, great sense of safety, no overcrowding of a line up of jeeps. Most of the time it was just our jeep with just the two of us and in it with the guide/driver. We never once felt unsafe or threatened. I really want to go again - the adventure of a lifetime.
My third visit to Naboisho conservancy which has simply reinforced the view that it has some of the best game viewing country in the Mara eco-system. Considering that less than a decade ago, it was overgrazed, degraded and deteriorating rapidly, the turn around has been extraordinary.
It is good enough to support a high density of lion that seem to be centred in the heart of the conservancy leaving country east and west for cheetah to thrive. There are great numbers of plains game to support all these predators. Leopard are definitely around but appear to be harder to see. Hyenas are plentiful. In our most recent visit we saw 36 different mammals and over 100 different birds despite not spending any time on the little brown birds and cisticolas!
Major advantages of the Conservancies are well recorded but in brief: you don't have the vast numbers of vehicles that the National Reserve suffers from; you are allowed off road; you are allowed to drive around at night - all of these things make a significant difference to your game viewing experience and it is so much more rewarding.
The animals appear to be very well habituated to vehicles and most totally ignore them. I never get the feeling that our presence has affected the behaviour of the animals. Most of the drivers are well disciplined and courteous to each other.
So Naboisho is a real success story in my eyes and the only challenge is how they will control the numbers of cattle going forward. The herds we saw grazing inside the conservancy were unbelievable and the growth in numbers is probably unsustainable.
However, right now, it is a great location. What ever time of year you go, there will be plenty to see and a great time is guaranteed.
