“Stunningly beautiful landscape and a wonderfulresort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 14, 2011

We spent five nights at this resort and loved it. Blanket Bay is a gorgeous lodge with as friendly, professional and attentive service as I have ever experienced. The lodge is located in the alpine area of the south island and the scenery is breathtaking. The room was not huge but was well-appointed and very comfortable with a very large bath with tub, shower, two sinks, luxury linens, in room internet and Sky TV and a nice balcony overlooking the lake. Lodge is very nice and the views are terrific. Beautiful pool and very nice hot tub with a view of the lake.

The food was delicious and there wer three choices of entrees at dinner--meat, fish and vegetarian and choices for starters and dessert as well. Breakfast was also great--fresh pastries, fruit, I tried the pancakes, french toast, eggs and my wife had an omelette--all were very tasty. We skipped lunch each day as the breakfast was so big.

We took the Dart River jet boat ride and it was a blast--great driver and beautiful waterfalls and flora. We walked into the nearby town and enjoyed the little main street shopping and cafe for coffee. The highlight of our entire 16 day trip was the Over The Top helicopter trip with Steve as our pilot. We did the four stop version--glacier, beach, Milford Sound and mountaintop with champagne and cheese and fruit. My wife was a little scared but relaxed with Steve's professionalism evident and his soothing words a great help. The scenery was like a movie (well, it was in the Lord of the Rings so exactly like a movie), we got so close to a waterfall at Milford Sound I thought the windshield would be wet, saw the seals on the beach, and just had a once in a lifetime experience in a beautiful 7 passenger Eurocopter with just the two of us and Steve (a former Royal Marine so he wasn't phased by a couple of New Yorkers on their 30th Anniversary), as friendly as the NZ stereotypes--great people!

BB is expensive but we thought it was well worth it for the extraordinary experience.

This is our 4th trip to Blanket Bay - the first in 1999 and the last one 6 years ago. To go to a place that you remembered 10 years ago as a dream destination and return to have an even better experience is remarkable. The Lodge looks exactly the same and the grounds even more beautiful with all the shrubbery grown.
The suite - with its expansive terrace - great amenities and thrilling views never fails to impress.
The key ingredients for making Blanket Bay special are Philip and Anna who head a team of warm, loving, interesting and committed staff. They all have an enthusiasm and an appreciation for the uniqueness of this lodge and its surroundings. They greet each guest warmly and treat them individually in terms of working out activities that suit their needs and interests. My observations and conversations with other guests - most of whom are very well travelled - is that they all want to come back and feel that they are living in a dream.
Blanket Bay and New Zealand are far and it is very expensive for us - the most we have ever paid for any travel. However, once you get there you know that every moment is worth it and if traveling is a priority one will want to experience Blanket Bay.

Oh I just wish i could let out a big sigh.... What a lovely place.
If you're going to make the effort to go to one of the most picturesque countries in the world - please make sure you stay at one of the most picturesque hotels in NZ.
It's very exclusive and expensive - but well worth it and the drive it takes to get there.
Let yourself go. say yes when they offer dinner. say yes when they offer a glass of champagne and for god sake say yes when given the option to take a helicopter ride.
Big sigh... that's all I have to say.

We had the privilege of spending a night at Blanket Bay in December 2010. Had we not had other (non-cancelable) reservations, we would have stayed longer. The lodge itself is perfection. Beautiful spaces with fireplaces, highly polished wood, art, sculpture, and oriental rugs. Everything about the Lodge is tasteful and unique. And rather then overwhelm the senses, the art and design compliment the immense beauty that presents itself from every window and patio and deck. The physical setting is simply stunning. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by the manager, Philip, who is obviously an intelligent and educated individual, as well as a consummate professional. We were upgraded to a suite which was beyond description, except to say that the fireplace was perfect and the steam room/shower a dream. Our bags and closet were arranged by Josh in the most efficient way (thank you). We had dinner in the cave (celebrating my husband's 65th birthday) which was an experience in itself. The food was delicious. We took Philip's recommendation and enjoyed a helicopter ride the next day. The helicopter picked us up at the Lodge and took us to Milford Sound, the top of a glacier and a stop on the wild west coast. Tammy, a cheery and lovely staff member, saw us off and greeted us upon our return, all the while taking pains to reassure me that the ride was perfectly safe and that it would be a fabulous experience, which it was. Yes, the Lodge is pricey, but in my opinion, our stay was priceless. We"ll be back.

We stayed three nights at Blanket Bay near the end of a three week NZ visit that included most of the country's best known lodges.
We were traveling witness another couple and received an upgrade to one of the separate chalets when we checked in. So we had a very large bedroom (my wife thought it felt like sleeping in a living room) and a great room that we shared with the other couple. The view over a lawn to the lake and mountains beyond was superb.
Service was attentive and responsive. We were made to feel special. Food service and quality was as good as any of the other NZ lodges that we visited, probably the best. Interestingly, the wine list was much higher priced than the competition, and the quality of the wine didn't match some of the same labels and years that we had previously on this trip

I cannot begin to describe how wonderful our night was at Blanket Bay last night. As soon we arrived we were welcomed and greeted like old friends and shown around. The lodge is the most magnificant yet friendly, grand yet unimposing, luxurious yet homely place I have ever stayed at. Set on the shores of Blanket Bay it is hard to imagine the sheer scale of the snow capped peaks that rose above us in every direction. The lake seemed to change colour every minute and every window, every aspect highlighted the rugged natural beauty around. The Lodge has been built in harmony with the landscape and built with the same raw natural materials that surround. Every detail, the games room, wine cellar, spa, study for pre dinner drinks has been mastered with perfection. Our unique 5 course dinner and breakfast was perfect. Thank you Judy and everyone at Blanket bay, we will be back !

My husband and I went to New Zealand for our honeymoon in Nov 2007, we spent 4 nights at The Spire Hotel in Queenstown and 3 nights at Blanket Bay.

The location of Blanket Bay is amazing with Lake Wakatipu and the gorgeous mountains as a backdrop. The service is excellent with helpful and friendly staff. The food was first class, I must stress it was top notch with a great selection of wine/champagne.

Our only disappointment was with the room: tiny, outdated, small balcony thus no space to chill out and enjoy the amazing views. To conclude, the location, food and service were impeccable. However, the room was unacceptable for the reasons mentioned already. We were also unlucky to have the room opposite the office resulting in unwanted noise. For this price, we have stayed in better places.
