Spent 1 night here before our hike on the Routeburn track. The drive to Glenorchy is 45 mins from Queenstown & very scenic. The room was spotlessly clean with a comfy bed, hot shower and kitchen facilities if you need them (knives, toaster, plates, pots etc etc). Glenorchy is a very small town/village so you may like to stock up some food etc before leaving Queenstown. there is an easy 1 hour stroll just around the corner through the wetlands area. You can take a bus to Glenorchy from Queenstown & then a morning shuttle out to the Routeburn track if you don't have a car....when you are virtually at the unspoilt end of the planet...what else do you want.

I loved this place. Quiet with a full kitchen and the woman who runs it (can't remember her name) was a great help with finding avalanche conditions for the Routeburn Track. It's an easy walk to the pubs/restaurants, the price is good, and the room and all the dishes were clean. Nice comfortable beds too, which I found isn't a given in motels in the South Island.

Still, the main reason you come here is for the absolute incredible variety of outdoor things to do. You can hike Routeburn, you can hike Rees Valley, you can hike the Dart River, you can hike or helicopter to Earnslaw Burn, you can take a jetboat up the Dart River, etc. With the release of The Hobbit perhaps the most popular thing to do here will be to drive out to Paradise where so much of it was shot. Another thing I love about this area is you can go outside and see a pretty dark sky at night; seeing the Magellanic Clouds and Centaurus from here at night was awesome. Us northern dwellers don't get to see those things in our sky! (we do get ursa major though!). It's a great place to watch a sunrise too, and you have amazing views the second you step into the parking lot.

Not too impressed - met with a key in the door which didn't work, grubby furnishings, mucky cutlery, bathroom floor which hadn't been cleaned for a while (I know because I cleaned it myself!). Perhaps we just caught the owner on an off day but she wasn't interested in offering advice or guidance on the local area. Such a shame as the location is stunning.

The Mt Earnslaw Motel was clean and comfortable, the room was bigger than we expected and while the bedspreads may make it look a little dated the rooms weren't.
Easy walking distance to the pub and cafe.
The staff were very thoughtful, bringing us candles when Glenorchy lost power.

The Mt Earnslaw Motel, is located in the sleepy town of Glenorchy which proved to be a great kick off to start our tramping (Greenstone, Routeburne, ReesDart). Rooms were very adequate with kitchenette, Clean and very Quiet. Great place in nice town with a stroll to cafes and Pub, all the important things after tramping.

The Glenorchy area is one of New Zealand's gems being the launching place to experience the Dart River ("Lord of the Rings" set), Routeburn Track (one of the Great Walks), the Greenstone and Caples tracks and Rees River Valley. Paradise, a locality ten minutes away, is aptly named.
Glenorchy in distance is only 40 minutes travel time but 50 years behind Queenstown; however, it is fast changing with increasing tourism so be quick before they build the flash and expensive hotels and restaurants. If you can't survive without 5 star accommodation and restaurants, then stay in Queenstown and venture no further.
Having said that, the Mt Earnslaw Motel was surprisingly comfortable with a good ensuite, king size bed, kitchenette etc., (the website photographs don't do it justice) and it is excellent value. Great base if taking day walks in the local area, or taking-off or arriving back after one of the four or five day walks.
No upmarket restaurants locally but the hotel has well priced meals (Blue Cod cheaper than on Stewart Island) and opportunity to mix with both the locals and other tourists.
Just keep Glenorchy and the Mt Earnslaw Motel quiet as I'm back again next year and don't want to find it booked out.

Booking online is always fraught. What I was looking for was a comfortable place for a couple of days R&R between tramps. It needed to be central to bus connections, restaurants etc [I had no vehicle], quiet, and reasonably priced.
This Motel is all of this and more. The rooms are very spacious and comfortable and certainly belie the slightly warn first impression of the welcoming sign and reception. The rooms are also very quiet. Laundry facilities are limited but I had no problem in getting my full wash done and dried within hours of arrival.
Perhaps best of all, the Motel is efficiently and unobtrusively run and the warm and friendly Corrine happily accommodated my repeated change of plans.
I'll certainly back up for a repeat stay next visit.

Room Tip: The motel actually fronts the street but there is no noise at night at all and the rooms are very so...
