Liked: Good match of ability to horses. Very nice scenery. Lupins were spectacular, as were views of the mountains alongside the Rees river. Very good guide. Horses in excellent condition, obviously know their jobs.

Disliked: Not enough opportunities to go faster than a walk. Would have liked at least a slight climb rather than along the river only.

Good ride for beginners, but a bit long for complete beginners.

Thank you very much for your feed-back. We pride ourselves in our horses as they reflect the high standards of our horse trekking. Our horses are all put through months of training before they are graduated onto the trekking.
The high standard of horse care and training reflexes on our guides as well. Our standards are a lot higher than what is required and our staff know our area well. This means that our clients are given a fantastic experience along with New Zealand knowledge and true Kiwiana :)
On our treks our guides must evaluate their clients and the 1st and most important thing is to keep everyone safe. We have found by pushing clients to do more faster riding increases the risk of a fall 85%. We also offer a shorter ride (REES RIVER RIDE) which is one hour in length for the client that wishes to experience riding but not push the boundaries to far. I hope now you understand the reasons for safety.
Thank you again for your feedback plus we are so pleased you really enjoyed your time with us.

High Country Horses provides the most amazing experience for riders of all experience - our group had first time rider, as well as those more experienced and was able to cater to both levels to ensure an enjoyable ride for all. The setting could not be more stunning - everything from the snow-covered mountains, fields of flowers, blue sparking streams to cross, and green hills full of sheep. Casey, one of our guides, was incredibly friendly and helpful. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip to NZ!

My wife and I are novice riders, but this was not an issue with the service provided by High Country Horses. The team did a wonderful job matching up the right horse with the right rider and provided a great route around the rivers just outside of Glenorchy. Their ranch is a bit secluded, and is tucked in at the base of a large, freestanding mountain.

There are multiple options from which to choose, and we settled on the 2:30 p.m. ride that lasted two hours, and cost us $330 NZD. This sounds like a lot of time to spend, but it would be my recommendation as we were just to the point of soreness that allowed us to enjoy the ride, but not regret the time.

The views are spectacular and the guide explained what we were seeing all around as we went through it. There were also several river crossings that added to the fun of the ride. This seemed like a great operation and we would definitely do it again!

On arrival we were provided with a form to complete and directed to select helmets and boots, however I was informed that my boots would be suitable, knee length leather fashion boots. This was not the case and I wish I had made use the gum boots they provided to others. The team seemed very disorganised when sorting out groups, allocating horses and preparing for the tour.
The guide was providing a commentary however it could not be heard clearly and it appeared that she ran out of things to say mid way through. The group was provided a briefing on how to trot with the horses and provided a number of locations to carry out this as a group. Not all members were comfortable doing this, as a result the guide commented " We will have to go with the pace of the slowest rider then" this left customers feeling embarrassed and that they had spoilt the other riders opportunity.
Scenery was spectacular, the weather was fabulous and the river crossings were challenging however exhilarating.
