“Wide range of drinks with yummy bites”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 6, 2013

I liked that the wide range of drinks took centre stage in the menu, and the food was surprising good as well. Reasonably priced.

“Got in at last!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 14, 2013

After checking out all the usual suspects and finding them all full, and spectacularly slipping twice, we tried our luck at Raku, and got in. We were always unsuccessful in our 2 previous visits. It's basically a large hut, an open kitchen/service area/bar section taking up perhaps a quarter of the space. Seating is tight. Service was reasonably quick, considering how packed they were. They have an English menu and ordering in English is fine, as we found with every restaurant in Hirafu.

The food was very good, every dish hitting the spot apart from the grilled snow crab which was small and surprisingly fishy in taste. The fresh scallops, largest ones I have seen, shucked in front of us, were very impressive, and I thought good value at JPY960 each. The bill for 4 of us including a beer and sake came to JPY14,160 or about SGD190, probably somewhat less than a similar meal in Singapore of grilled food and some raw seafood in the Cuppage area, and of course with much better choice and freshness.

There are trendier restaurants in Hirafu, but if it is straightforward Japanese food done well that you are after, this does the job. Getting in is the problem. But turnover is quick, so if there isn't a queue you probably won't have too long a wait to get in.

“Great/best Japanese in Niseko Hirafu Ski Village with something for everyone”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 2, 2013

2013 was our 5th consecutive year skiing in Niseko Japan. While it is the snow that never fails to be the best our other reason is to visit Raku. Very much a traditional Izakaya (like your local pub) with a warm and inviting interior to escape the -10c outside. No bookings taken, it is small and nearly always full from about 6 till 9 but tables tend to turn over reasonably quickly. You can always find a seat or corner to stand in and have a drink while you wait. It’s worth it. Highlights for us are the whole grilled squid, tuna sushi, frozen salmon (not actually just raw) avocado salad, the Hokkaido fish, or the simple grilled corn. There are also a few dishes for the non adventurous among you. There is a variety of sake (petrol) simple cocktails, beer etc typical of Japanese izakaya's and all average priced. This year they even had an affordable red and white wine by the glass which is unusual for Japan. However for a ski village restaurant we do not find it at all expensive. The lady that runs the place dresses traditionally and is absolutely wonderful. She recognises us when we enter each year and these days we always bring her a little gift and get hugs in return. The staff are always great and handle English ok, even though we tend to murder the Japanese language every time we visit. So get in early or go late, or be prepared to wait around, it is worth it.

“Good Izakaya in the heart of resort restaurants.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2013 via mobile

After trying to get in 3 nights in a row we got a table. Raku doesn't take reservations; just like your local pub.

The service is very friendly and the menu has a definite Hokkaido flare. Nothing I sampled disappointed and after the evening I'd certainly had lots to eat.

If you're going to stay in the resort area Raku Izakaya is a good taste of what a japanese izakaya is all about.
