“Newly opened, good location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 16, 2014 via mobile

Convenient location for skiing, a couple of hundred metres walk to the four man lift.
This is only the second season for the hotel so everything is brand new and nicely decorated. There is a nice small onsen in the hotel.
Bar one very rude aussie receptionist who 'greeted me' the staff are very polite and accomodating much like most Japanese people but unfortunately seem to have very little training and no-one i dealt with really knew what they were doing.
One further quam is the tv only has japanese channels. The apple tv box is not that useful for people with no id or me being from HK where itunes is limited.
No room service, no breakfast and not much help and guidance about the area and getting around which i found some of the cheaper hotels to be much better at.

Thank you very much for your staying at Chalet Ivy.
But we are very sorry to hear that your experience at Chalet Ivy did not meet our own very high standards. I hope that in this response I can address some of your concerns:

Firstly, all of our rooms include a free Western/Japanese buffet breakfast in the Snow Castle restaurant. I apologize if this was not made clear to you during the check-in process.

Thank you for your feedback about our Apple TVs. We are investigating alternative services for the future, but feel at the moment that this is the most effective way of allowing customers to enjoy English language entertainment services.

Our staff are all highly trained and can recommend the best services and restaurants in the local area. During your check-in we provide both a map and dining guide for the resort, and can help to reserve restaurants in advance. Our shuttle bus is also free for guests to use to travel to restaurants. We are very sorry that you felt that our concierge team let you down in this respect.
We are trying hard to provide higher service and warmest hospitality to our guests after we had your comment.
Thank you very much for your mention about our service and we hope to have another chance to have you here again.

Warmest regards,

Manager

Stayed there around NYE for a few nights...overall a nice stay, staff were very helpful, rooms were nice, comfortable with everything you need including Wifi and Apple TV which I think is a very good idea given my limited Japanese skills.
Hotel is conveniently located only a short walk to the lift which is a good warm up anyway. You can rent your skis on site, limited choice, but new equipment.
Otherwise, you're within walking distance from a lot of restaurants, so great location overall.
Food is ok, nothing amazing, but good. The atmosphere of the restaurant is anything but casual though, that's the only thing I regret, quite formal.
I would go back.

We were on our honeymoon staying at Chalet Ivy when i ruptured my ACL ligament and tore my MCL ligament whilst skiing. All the staff at Chalet Ivy went above and beyond what was expected of them and looked after us so well. They drove us to and from the hospital late at night and even got us a coffee and lollies for the trip to the hospital. They drove us to the local Physiotherapist and chauffeured us around to restaurants as i could not walk. They even organised a wheelchair i could use around the hotel and offered us breakfast in bed as it was painful to sit on a chair. I can not speak highly enough of the service we were given and rest assured if you decide to book with Chalet Ivy you will have a beautiful modern clean room close to the slopes and will be well looked after

Room Tip: We were in room 509 which had a great view of the mountain. Night view of the mountain lit up for sk...

Top reasons to stay at Chalet Ivy:

Location - just a 5-minute walk to the ski lifts at .Base in Upper Hirafu. Perfect for those early morning or late night runs. Plus the road and sidewalk outside this hotel is heated, which is great if you are travelling with kids or parents - less slipping on the ice!

First stop on the shuttle to Hanazono - if you are taking taking lessons in Hanazono, you will want to take the free shuttle from Hirafu to Hanazono 308. Chaley Ivy is one of the first stops on the shuttle route - so you are always guaranteed a seat on the minibus. By the time we got to The Vale, which is just two stops down, the seats were often full and people would have to wait for the next shuttle.

Take the shuttle at around 9:10am to get into Hanazono at around 9:45, will give you enough time for a coffee pre-lesson. Another option if you want to ski or snowboard to Hanazono is take the Hirafu Gondola up, then Swinging Monkey ski lift. Parrallel (red run) and Silver Dream (green run) will get you to class.

Ski Concierge - the hotel has it's own equipment rental and storage in the basement. Which means you can arrive at 2pm at Chitose - be at the hotel by 4pm and on the slopes by 5pm! Each room has their own locker to store your stuff - so no long lines to return the equipment at the end of the day. Their stuff is all new, too - no old banged up rental equipment at this place!

Food - Snowcastle is an excellent restaurant, and Chef Kato's creations are legendary. Make sure to book at least one night's dinner at the hotel, and have the sea urchin mousse. The breakfast buffet caters to both Asian and Western tastes: highlights are the home-made tomato jam, the french toast and the french bread.

Onsen - the hotel has it's own onsen, which is open almost 24 hours so you can visit anytime. Imagine hot baths with full facilities just downstairs of your hotel room. Perfect for soaking and relaxing those muscles at the end of a long day snowboarding or skiing.

Rooms - as the hotel is only a year old, the rooms are in great condition and face either the ski lifts / runs or Mt. Yotei. Decor is tastefully designed and rooms are well thought out. For example, there is a small area right by the door of the room which has no carpet (for wet shoes) and a closet to hang coats and outergarments. Then the carpeted area begins and there is another closet inside for the non-snow clothes.

Lobby with fireplace - this is a lovely little area that we found ourselves relaxing in when whenever we were on the way in or out of the hotel. We would sit here and relax after a nice dinner, having cups of hot apple cider and we found other hotel guests were doing the same. So we had a few evenings where we had pleasant conversations with some of the other guests...

And last but not least,

Service - everyone at the hotel really goes out of their way to make every guest's stay more comfortable, from booking restaurants to arranging airport transfers to scheduling snowboarding lessons. One afternoon we were out walking and saw that there was a massage place next door. We picked up the massage place business card and took it back to the hotel to ask them to book for us, and they said "shall we ask them to come to your room?". It didn't even occur to us to have the massage people come to the hotel. Needless to say, we enjoyed the massages in the comfort of our own rooms!

The room is nice and cosy. The staff are very friendly and professional : very easy to find English-speaking people.
The location is perfect for skiing : few minutes from the lift.
They also have shuttle service.

I was impressed with this hotel from the second I got off the bus from Chitose at the Welcome Centre and greeted by the hotel concierge. Even though i had some booking issues, they were sorted professionally. Location is perfect and convenient and rooms are well appointed and brand new looking considering the hotel is now 12 months old. The kitchenettes in the suite rooms should get some basic cutlery and plates to make it functional but after a quick call it was sorted. Heating is comfortable as some lodges suffer from over heating in ski resorts but not at the Ivy you can control the heating easily.
The hotel staff were friendly and anticipated your every need. Big commendation to their ski concierge team - amazing services day in and day out.

Breakfast is simple and heavily asian focused. The last night I decided to try the restaurant for dinner at the Snow Castle. In summary the ambience was lacking. My Champagne was flat. Food came slowly. Obvious confusion between waiters and kitchen. Orders coming out that people didn't order. Customers around me complaining quietly making my dining experience more disappointing. The quality of the ingredients and presentation is good but I believe the restaurant is the weakest link of this hotel. First time I ever had to ask for a water refill. Even the ski concierge made my experience more enjoyable than the 8000 yen Omakase dinner.

Maybe they should stop talking it up on check in because I enjoyed the local ramen restaurant more than this. Doesn't matter if you have the best chef in town if you can't provide a complete dining experience to accompany it.

I am sure they will get it right one day. Shame it was my Xmas dinner.

Room Tip: High Floors have good views of the Ski Runs or Mt Yotei
