This guesthouse is super clean with not a single speck of dust anywhere. The guesthouse lets you enjoy both a western and eastern lodging atmosphere with plenty of open space and lounging areas. The view from the living room/common area is amazing as you can see the entirety of Mt. Yotei.

Ryo, the owner of the guesthouse, is extremely helpful and will give you advice on what to do in and around Kutchan/Niseko. His English is very good and has no problems communicating with foreign travelers. He will also provide FREE shuttle services to wherever you need to go, so that even if you don't have a car, you can still get to the sightseeing destinations. Some travelers say that the guesthouse is a bit out of the way, but it is a 10 min walk from the Kutchan station. Even then, Ryo will come to pick you up at the station with his car. The amount of service that he provides for free makes it feel like you booked a full tour along with your stay at the guesthouse.

Niseko Backpackers Tabi Tsumugi is a hostel in a class of its own. It leaves such an impression that it becomes  a part of your travel experience rather than just an inexpensive option to get a night's sleep.  A well conceived and beautifully designed hostel with all the comforts and amenities for the modern traveller plus the attentive personalised service from its super friendly owner Ryo.

Tabi Tsumugi is not just a backpackers' haven.  We were a family of 4 with 2 grown children so the 2-bunk bed dormitory was just right for us. Ryo really reinvented the traditional hostel bunk bed! They are comfortable and so spacious that you can really stretch out and still have ample space for personal storage,  there's even a safe provided to each bed;  a reading light; hook and hangers; sockets for recharging, nothing is missed nor overlooked. Even if you were sharing a  dormitory room with complete strangers, you'd still feel you have your very own private space. My favourite spot in the hostel is definitely the dining area.  The long dining table is placed facing the window with the magnificent view  of Mt Yotei so breakfast every morning is that much more  glorious!
The location is perfect:  in a quiet area surrounded by trees, not right in the middle of town, but shops, cafes, restaurants and the local train station are all within comfortable walking distance.  Unlike nearby popular Hirafu,  Kutchan has retained all the genuine charm of a small village town.

Tabi Tsumugi has  definitely changed my  perception of 'hostel' accomodation and having stayed there and in Kutchan has left me and my family pleasantly surprised and utterly charmed. Believe me,  your only regret will be that you have to eventually leave!
Congratulations Ryo! You have really suceeded in your strive to provide affordable, comfortable lodging that all travellers would enjoy and wish to share the experience.

NB  most booking sites do not permit booking for more than 2 persons.  We booked directly through the hostel's  site (English available) by filling out the booking form. Ryo has very good command of English and he responded promptly to our request and  concerns via  email.

Tabitsumugi is a cozy and spacious hostel which combines traditional Japanese elements with western ones familiar to a North American traveler such as myself.
Ryo, the owner, will happily suggest some great activities to do in the area and even some delicious restaurants to try in Kutchan, all within walking distance.
The hostel itself is well kept, extremely clean and the pricing is very reasonable. The bunk beds are very comfortable and offer a great night's sleep. In addition to all the great services that are offered, Ryo does a fantastic job as a host and is always available, which is the main reason why Tabitsumugi is such a great place to stay.

5-10 min walk from JR Kutchan station. 10 min drive to slopes (no need to rent a car as Ryo will drop off and pick up). Super clean facilities with washer, dryer, kitchen, and all necessary amenities. Kutchan is a much better town to stay in vs Hirafu as it is more for locals so food is much better and more authentic. You can tell Ryo has put a lot of effort into his home with all the meticulous details that he has invested in this establishment. Will definitely be back.

My brother and I stayed at Tabi Tsumugi in early January 2013 for nearly two weeks while on a ski trip to the Niseko area. First of all, the hostel is fairly new, extremely clean, well appointed and reasonably priced. The beds, be they Japanese or Western style, are comfortable and the communal area in the small hostel is great for meeting the other travellers. Furthermore, it is within easy walking reach of the Kutchan train station and the various shops and restaurants of the town that are considerably cheaper than the nearby resort town of Grand Hirafu. Definitely a more authentic Japanese experience on a budget than what you'll find in Grand Hirafu. Undoubtedly though, the best thing about the hostel is the owner/manager Ryo who is both friendly and helpful. The hostel is only in its third year of operation and I seriously doubt it'll be staying a hidden gem for much longer with the service Ryo offers.

If you are looking for an original, modern Japanese hostel with a personal touch and a warm welcome, I can strongly recommend the Tabitsumugi Hostel in Kutchan.
The hostel combines traditional Japanese living style - tatami mats, sleeping on "futon", a charcoal place in the living room - with modern western elements that make it comfortable and convenient for every backpacker - spacious dorms, room for boots and skis, washing machine, free wireless, etc.
On top of that, the owner happily provides useful information on local transportation and activities. Discount coupons for the local ski area and onsen are also available.
Moreover, a delicious traditional Japanese breakfast is served for a small additional amount of money.
The hostel is conveniently located within walking distance from Kutchan train station, a big supermarket, the center of town.
