Club Med Sahoro Hokkaido
Reviewed June 21, 2013

3rd time to Japan (Tokyo only) but first time skiing there. Club Med exceeded expectations in all areas & has made me want to come back. We were met at the airport then transferred to the hotel with no fuss. On arrival were a heap of staff to meet us which was awesome & unique considering the journey to Japan was so long via Tokyo.

We took our own masks & jackets but hired pants (you can hire everything if you like). We jumped onto the ski field ASAP & it was amazing. Great runs, plenty of room on the mountain & included in the rates. You can get lessons if you like & again, this is included in the rate. We saw heaps of kids which made our stay so much fun. Families galore & as a couple with a friend this was a great place to stay

The food was localised & plentiful. I never went hungry & thoroughly enjoyed all aspects. The staff were great, interactive & social. Nighttime activities plus the local town was not far away for local interaction

Really fun experience with a unique twist of Club Med hospitality. Thoroughly recommend this resort to skiers, families & people who enjoy "all inclusive"

We have been three times to club med sahoro because the powder snow is wonderful. The service we get is of great quality, particularly from Catherine from the Malaysian head office who helped us book the holiday and Cat (another Malaysian) at the admin side in Sahoro who ensured all our needs were taken care of. We have made great friends there and overall the service was fantastic. The rooms are basic but clean and the food good. The kids always enjoy themselves there and that certainly helps the parents! Our ski instructor Paul was fantastic and was great with our group throughout the week we were there. We would definitely go back again.

This is a bit of a love- hate review...positive are:
1. In Asia so no jet lag, especially important for families
2. Powder snow on slopes
3. Good food, especially on evenings when they serve king crab and Hokkaido oysters...

Negative is

1. Extremely expensive for what you get... For less money, you can fly from Asia to club med Villars, Switzerland, and have better ski school for kids, slope variety and overall ambiance.

We enjoyed our holiday overall but won't return. For the price we paid (+$18,000 for 7 nights for 2 adults + 3 kids all in) we were expecting a lot...and were disappointed ( perhaps our expectations were too high?). We could not help but compare this trip to our previous trip to club med Villars last year, which was less expensive and higher quality overall.

The biggest disappointing aspect was the ski school. Completely unacceptable to have 18-20 students in a class group... Even worse was that most of the instructors were not fluent in English or French, which meant that between the high numbers and instructor inability to effectively communicate to students, it is very slow to progress. Compared to club meds in Europe where instead of relying on GO instructors, they outsource to proper ski schools, this was a huge disappointment! Our kids were on red slopes in Villars by day 3 in club med Villars, but were still on the bunny green slopes in sahoro, until I understood how to play the club med Sahoro politics... Pressure and micromanage the ski instructors or pay for private lessons ($200 per lesson per child!!) in the morning to ensure kids could move on to the next level swiftly in the afternoon... In confidence, the few western instructors confessed that with so many kids it was hard too keep track of each kids' level, let alone instruct them sufficiently to make meaningful progress. What a joke for the money spent!!

Otherwise, rooms were very basic -- dormitory style. And for families the fact that there are no connecting rooms and no guarantee that your kids will have a room next to you is not only unacceptable, but very stressful!! We finally managed to get assurance from the hotel that our kids (3--ages 5,7,10) we secured the room next to ours just a few weeks before our departure...had it not worked out, my husband and I would have had to spilt across the resort on our well earned holiday...

The most positive aspect of the holiday was the ski conditions. There were only 9 chair lifts, but powered snow was abound...only 2 resorts share the mountain so it was not crowded...at the same time there were no cafes or restaurants on the mountain and folks generally skied from 9-12 am, returned to he hotel fort lunch, then were out again from2-3.30(time most chai rlifts stopped.).

Brought my wife and baby gal (21 months) to Club Med Sahoro just March'13. Spent a good 6D5N here. We were greeted at Ohibiru airport and was transported to Club Med.

Upon arrival, we were welcomed warmly (its winter) by the recep team (thanks Alvin). Great work on the overview/intro on club med and what we have to do next. Any GO you meet anywhere any part of Club Med, you will be sure to be greeted and attended (if you need help).

The room is O.K. Enough for my family to get comfy. We were not excepting to spend too much time inRoom actually.

Food is all-you-can-eat buffet. Fresh Sashimi and sushi. A good mix of seafood, meat and jap food. You gotta try their shabu shabu. Met lots of GOs from different countries during meals.

Pool is clean. Gotta try the indoor jacuzzi as well as the Canadian tub. Ofuru is available on the 2nd level (staircase up from pool area). I totally missed out Ofuru!

We managed to 'convince' Petit Club (thanks Minako) to take care of our baby gal (21 months) for a morning session so that wife and me were able to try skiing for the 1st time. Wife sacrificed to babysit while I completed my beginner and class 1. Wife is always the best.

We managed to 'convince' Petit Club (thanks Mie) again to take care of our baby gal for 1 full day so that wife can complete her beginner class and I tried snowboarding.

Departing is always a sad thing. But all things need to come to an end, so that it can start again. Club Med Sahoro, I will see you again =)

Room Tip: it doesn't matter which room. get out of the room and play (unless you need to play in the room...

Overall experience exceeded our expectations.
What we like - Petit Club G.O.s were excellent and my son had a great time there; food was good; clean and well-maintained; friendly G.O.s filled with energy
What we thought could be better - some of the entertainment content could be more family-friendly (some contents we thought were not appropriate for young kids); Beginner ski classes were too big; Ski instructors' standards vary, but I had an excellent ski-instructor from Sahoro resort who spoke some English and by mid-day, the class could manage the Club-1 level ski lift and slope
Definitely will consider going back there again next year

We spent 5 days during Easter at the resort, and have to say we are impressed. The girls at Petit Club kept our son happy throughout and always came back exhausted! One memorable moment was when we saw our son dressed up as a superman parading with superman around the resort. Once again many thanks to Mie, Minami and Agnes!

The buffet didn't serve very high-end food but was generally tasty and the selection was quite good. The hot pot place however was a bit of a disappointment - we ended up eating again at the buffet.

Ski school was well-organised, not all the coach spoke good English but their helpfulness more than made up this shortcoming. There weren't many people on the slope which is a nice change compare to France.

The room was not brand new but very clean. To be honest given there was quite a lot to do we didn't spend much time there anyway.

Our comments would be on our skiing experience since previous reviewers have been spot on in terms of food, accommodation, service, etc which were truly excellent. The GOs really made the effort to make us feel welcome and worked tirelessly. They are truly an amazing bunch. Hats off to them.

We came with our two teenagers who had a blast skiing & snowboarding. Husband and I were beginners. Our Club 1 lesson was a bit disastrous as our Japanese ski instructor spoke zero English and there were 15 persons in the group, which was much too large. We had no idea what we were meant to be doing and had very little control with our movements but he kept motioning us to carry on. Undoubtedly we fell many, many times and felt very frustrated as we couldn't quite understand/grasp the fundamentals. Fortunately we met another family of experienced skiers at dinner and they were kind enough to take us under their wing and show us the ropes the next day which made all the difference and gave us the confidence to try skiing again. This enabled us to progress to Club 2 the following day where fortunately, we had an English speaking instructor. So we think that if you are a beginner you do need to try and get an English speaking instructor as it really does make a HUGE difference to your first skiing experience.

Oh, and do bring a muscle rub for sore legs... :)
