“Abaka Bay - Paradise Found”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 18, 2013

My husband and I stayed at Abaka Bay Resort on Ile la Vache. It was amazing! Upon arrival at Paradise we were greeted by a delicious Barbancour rum punch. We had a wonderful room just a few steps from the clear warm turquoise waters a comfortable 80 degrees. The towels were luxurious and fluffy cotton. The cuisine was Creole food from conch in a spicy p'tit malice sauce to fresh avocados and "du riz d'jon d'jon' a black mushroom and rice, then fresh lobster (langoustes) was delicious. For breakfast we had a choice of fresh juices and an omlette of our choice. Dinner was a lovely affair with beautiful, crisp linen tablecloths, fresh local flowers and the lovely breezes serenading us. Dinah and Fernand, our hosts could not be nicer and more friendly. The hot water in our rooms were welcome after a day of swimming in the pure turquoise waters. We recommend visiting the "Island of Lovers" - this is a sand bar that appears in the middle of the water. You rent a boat and a table and umbrella are set up for you as well as a supply of water and wines or rum. Swim all day and the water is so clear you can see the starfish below. We're going next year. We fell in love with the island and the warm embrace of the friendly staff. Lynn our hostess was charming and attentive to our every whim. Thank you for the wonderful vacation to Paradise. This is a very family-friendly place and we met lots of Canadians there. Plan to get nicely dressed in the evening (nice sandals and a dress for women/ men in nice khakis and shirt - no t-shirts in the formal dining room). This is pure R&R. There is excellent Wi-Fi connection at the bar. This is a 4-star establishment. Run - don't walk - run!

Room Tip: All the rooms are wonderful. We recommend the small cabanas right on the water. We did receive an up...

If you want to escape the stress of modern life and find an oasis of calm, relaxing though authentic Haiti, this is the place to go. The water is calm and turquoise clear; the rooms clean, beautiful and comfortable with good working AC. If you need TV there is a huge flat screen in the restaurant/bar with cable, and the personnel will let you put the movie you want to watch ; they are so nice, willing to do anything to accommodate you. The fish is fresh, caught the very morning and the juices delicious; we had no stomach problem due to the water, ice or food. Congratulations for bringing such quality resort to a small remote island!

Very relaxing, calm and beautiful. If you want to get away from it all (no tv or phones in rooms),and hear the waves crash on the beach at night, this is the place. Bring lots of bug spray though, as the sand fleas are very bad!!! Had a wonderful time, but the bites were overwhelming!

Although living in Haiti, when my husband and I decided to spend the New Year's Eve with our girls at l'Ile a vache in Abaka Bay Hotel, we have not expected to receive what i am about to share. Traveling often around the country, in search of good and exquisite time, we are used not to receive good services, eating good food or having not that comfortable rooms. How greatly surprised we were when approaching the bay by the splendid color painted on the bungalows. Received with a smiling hostess offering some local cocktails, my family and I were already impressed. A quick overview of the site and we were charmed. The stairs conducting us to our room did not even bothered us - consider that we, haitian do not like stairs, we like everything close. Spatious, welcoming, prepared for us and awaiting our presence, the room was already freezing. But, what impressed us more was the fact that on the island, we have been able to order, eat whatever pleased us. The personnel is very polite and pleasant giving us a sense of being there only for us. We could realize that it was a HUMONGOUS and TREMENDOUS continuing effort to keep this site going and the owners are doing the best of the best they can to provide visitors with good food, good service and great relaxation. For me, this experience had a taste of coming back and we definitely will....

Room Tip: They are all good. rooms on the beach and on the hill, two different experiences

My fiance and I stayed there for about three nights, it was relaxing and romantic, the beach is absolutely beautiful, we loved the warm crystal clear water, and the sand was nice and soft. The staff was excellent they upgraded our room, and they made sure we were very comfortable. The food was great, and we had a variety of different meals each day, it ranges from Haitian cuisine to lobster, shrimp, and fish. The rooms are beautiful my only issue is that the price was a bit expensive because the cost is per person even if you are a couple. We visited the nearby villages, and took a tour of the island. Abaka Bay was a great experience I love it, when you visit make sure you bring a pair of hiking boots, a hat,and mosquito spray.

Room Tip: The deluxe beach front is great, you are steps away from the water, if you want something cheaper th...

My husband, teenage girls and myself were in AbakaBay August 2012. At the port of Les Cayes, AbakaBay employees, gave us the status of the boat running late, so we waited patiently. We were surprised to see the little motorized boat since we were arriving the day after a tropical depression but a very skilled captain took us to the island. When we arrived we knew we were in paradise, the welcome drinks, the various color houses, the smiling staff, the immaculate fine sandy beaches made it all so perfect for a relaxed vacation. We had two rooms on the beach each perfectly decorated with fine haitian arts and furnitures. The meals/drinks/juice were excellent, there were plenty but not "all inclusive" like DR or Jamaica but "Pension Complete" like in Europe, no waste; a variety of haitian food making you feel like you were in a haitian home. Breakfast, lunch were served outside, dinner in a more upscale dining-room. Owners were warm, courteous, and made us feel like we were at home and part of the family. Good internet access in eating areas. Excursions available to visit neighboring villages. Will go back with more friends. Teenagers loved it. Game room for kids.

Room Tip: Both our rooms were fine.

My family, a party of 8 including children, went to Akaba Bay for a 3-day stay. If you want to get away from it all and enjoy the true beauty of Haiti, I highly recommend Ile-a-Vache and this resort. However, I feel calling Akaba Bay a resort is a misnomer, it has the feel of a guest house. This is what makes Akaba Bay special. It's got the lay back Caribbean feel to it.

While it is a work in progress, it has the potential of becoming a first class resort. Or it could stay the way it is, with a little tweaking here and there, to make it truly amazing. I plan to go back for a longer stay.

Bring mosquito repellent, soap and extra clean bath towels (My cousin swears that the towels were washed in sea water because they were rough).

If you hire the guides at the hotel, make sure you make a firm price with them prior to setting off with them. Haitians have a tendency of not making a price with you and, saying their at your service, and then quoting an exorbitant amount after the tour. Ask them for a price, and work your way to a fair one, it's their time and they have to support themselves.

The pros: the location, the food is great, you could visit the caves, the villages, no one is harrassing you to buy something on the beach, the staff and the owners' daughter, is just so friendly and welcoming.

The Cons: mosquitoes, no snacks, the wooden boat ride from Aux Cayes after Hurricane Isaac- rough seas- horrible (the owners need to invest in a ferry or yatch, something other then that wooden boat).

Overall, its a great place!

Room Tip: The rooms on the beach are great and a bit small. For an amazing view ask for a mountain side room o...
