“Satisfying overall, disappointing in small details”
Reviewed July 6, 2013

To make things clear, this hotel is a magnificent property situated in a breathtaking area close to Ivrea and Biella in northern Italy. We spent 2 nights, since we needed accommodation for a music concert in Sordevolo by the great Ennio Morricone. Arriving at the hotel is in itself experience. Perched high up in the site of an old castle, remnants of which are still clearly visible. The decor is very beautiful overall, and the surrounding gardens as well as the view from the pool are amazing. The staff in general (especially the kitchen staff) were extremely knowledgeable and helpful, and so was the receptionist. However, apart from this, I cannot not comment about these things in view of others deciding to use this place. (1) The room we had had no air-conditioning. Even though the booking clearly stated climate-control, I was taken aback when I realized that there was only a vertical fan in the room. Unfortunately it was hot, and it did effect my sleep. The receptionist did offer us another room, but she informed us that it was of an inferior quality. (2) The Wi-Fi did not reach anywhere in the rooms or in the garden except for the reception area. Again, this was misleading, as in the booking it was clearly stated that there was free wi-fi in all rooms. (3) There was no safe in the room. Again, this was stated in the booking as being there. (4) No printed information was available in the rooms. Not even a pen and pencil, no room directory, no hotel brochure/leaflet. I find this very lacking, especially for a property of this type. (5) Worst of all, the pool area. In these types of places (and others of a supposedly inferior quality), one expects to find a pool area which is private and which does not lack any service. In the 2 days we stayed there we experienced dirty sunbeds, a group of workers who were doing hotel-related manual work and who were noisy, playing loud music, and most of all overlooking the guests. The maintenance guy was still setting up the wooden structures for the shaded areas, and apart from the noise of the drilling the smell of the paint to the wood he was using was almost untolerable. The water shower by the pool was dismantled. It is crazy to think that the outdoor garden maintenance is actually done in the summer months - especially with guests present and trying to relax. (Conclusion) I will consider visiting this hotel again, only if I make sure that these issues have been resolved. What a pity!

Room Tip: Make sure to confirm that your room has all the amenities listed in the booking.

certainly a place with character: complete silence in the park high above the plane of Ivrea, old stone walls, slightly shabby furniture, great food, attentive personal: the castello is an old italian lady with style and soul and here moods. Certainly to be recommended for those who like a special atmosphere and don't expect the glossy but impersonal appearance of international 4* hotel chains.

We chose the hotel for the location which is splendid. The rest a dissapointment. The junio suite had no bedside tables, no glasses in minibar, musty smell. The restaurant (dinner) was very good. The pool would have been great, but the area surrounding the pool a disaster, unkempt, high grass, tables, chairs overturned, no service whatsoever. Told the receptionist who listened took no notes and told us that other guests had also complained and that was it. Much too expensive.

This was our fourth stay in 15 years and we were very disappointed. To be met at reception by someone chewing gum is not a good start in a hotel of this calibre. A lot of money has been spent on decoration but there is a lot of thought lacking in the bathroom - poor towels, no bathrobes, a hair dryer not near a mirror. Indeed the only mirror was in the bathroom. Dirty shower curtain. The bedroom only had one chair and a horrible plastic looking table. To be in Italy and have to complain about the pasta is a travesity - dinner was another disappointment. The whole place needs a shake up. We would have used the swimming pool but on closer inspection, it was dirty and we were told you had to use the towels in the bathroom. We shall never stay again. There are other places to stay in the area of Ivrea

We were 2 couples used to travel World wide and arriving there we were welcome. Our rooms were fine, pleasant and the heater working well enough for the cold weather we had. Diner was excellent and the place authentic.
The pricing system need to be improved as there was a discrepency between the booking and the check, But I would recommand the place.

We first stayed here in the summer of 2000, before the attic was converted into guest rooms. We were not seeking luxury and, indeed, our room, once a monastic cell, was plain and simply furnished; I recall no TV or minibar, certainly no aircon. But it was spacious enough, with painted frescos, and - because the Castello sits on the peak of a high hill - a stunning panorama of the plain and foothills below. The ancient building was a bit run down, the gardens and terraces unkempt, and the service (shall we say?) unhurried. In short, an atmosphere of sleepy, hazy isolation, which we hugely enjoyed.

We returned eleven years later as part of a conference. We stayed in one of the new attic rooms at a discounted price: it was slightly dark and cramped but offered the same stunning panorama - a view now shared with the new jacuzzi and pool on the lower terrace. Despite TV (Italian channels only), minibar and aircon in our room, the recent make-overs have not, thankfully, subjected the Castello to homogenised, high-gloss good taste. Something has been lost, inevitably, but the hazy, rather run-down charm remains.

The hotel lent us a large tall room, perhaps the old refectory, for our short conference. There were no projection facilities, but coffee and lunch were good, and service was friendly and efficient. A good place for a simple business meeting, in other words, but not if you don't need swank and high-tech. The Castello deserves its four stars, but for its comfortable charm, not for stylishness.

Room Tip: Prefer 1st (US 2nd) floort rooms overlooking panorama

We stayed with three other couples in this hotel while on a golfing trip through Piemonte. The location on top of a hill is beautiful and so are the views from the swimming pool.
The rooms however were very disappointing. Ours was small, filled with rusty and wobly bric a brac, no chest of drawers, no airco. The bathroom was awful and a disgrace.
The food/service in the restaurant was OK.
We found this place over-priced and over-rated. I do not understand how it got a 4-star listing in the Relais du Silence organization.
