“traditional holiday”

A superb location with views and a gorgeous sunrise with very hospitable hosts. if you are looking for luxury, this is not the place, but for traditional is the best. The food is the best ,the wine is very good, the pool is small but clean and the place is far from the beaches. it is a good location for a trip for the Eolian Islands. for this locations is necessary to have a car but is possible to reach by train and take a taxi.Is a unique experience which is a shame to miss.

Even allowing for the fact we were travelling out of season this was amazing value. We stayed for four nights and enjoyed every moment. The rooms are clean, nicely decorated, warm and with comfortable beds. We had a balcony with views over the olive groves down to the sea and out to the Eolie Islands. There is a restaurant which serves a generous breakfast and will provide evening meals if booked in advance. This is worth doing as it's a bit of a journey to the nearest town to eat. Also the food is such good home-cooked Sicilian dishes that we enjoyed every meal there and the complimentary wine and cinnamon liqueur to finish! We were well placed to travel to Messina and Taormina on the motorway and other nearer attractions.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with balcony with a sea view.

We have spent our Christmas at this Agriturismo. We have 3 children and we have arrived late by our car after being on the road for a few days. Immediately after our arrival, we have met Giuseppe, who literally said: " I am very happy to have you here and I am here to make your stay enjoyable". And he really meant it! Minutes later arrived Teresa to our room with a plate of antipasti misti.

We have traveled a lot with our children around Sicily and nowhere in Sicily we have been met with such positive approach!

Santa Margherita offers a unique combination. It has a stunning location (above the see and in the middle of orange/lemon/almond/olive tree orchard), the accommodation is good and staff is excellent, especially you feel that it is family run. Perfect place for a family vacation and a perfect place as a base for exploration of the surrounding area.

We enjoyed the stay very much. The owners Fabio, Giuseppe and family do everything for tourists to enjoy the holiday. They staff members speak English, French, German at good level, they are all friendly and helpful. Wonderful views over Eolian islands, quiet, clean. Fantastic food, home wine and home made liqueurs (limoncello and others). Situated on an old farm, guests live in ex-farm buildings, old houses. They make olive oil, serve fruit and vegetables from their garden. It's a small hotel, thanks to that waitresses (Cristina and Samanta) know your preferences after the first day. You can see a small town Patti(4 kms away) from the top of the mountain where the hotel is. The nearest beach is there. It is recommended to hire a car to move around, the road down to town is narrow and winding but if you beep the horn and are careful you will be ok. Plenty of interesting places to visit nearby (Cefalu, Messina, Taormina, Castiglione di Sicilia). If you don't drive or are afraid of driving in Sicilia you can ask for a lift from the train station to the hotel. You can go by train to Palermo which will take all day but it is worth it.

We stayed at Santa Margherita for our first night in Sicily and it was a wonderful introduction to our holiday. We took the road from the motorway heading towards Gioiosa Marea and it was signposted but up and up what felt like a never ending steep narrow road! It was not a difficult road but not what we were used to and felt quite steep (we were in a fiat punto not a 4 x 4) and we got there no problem with sat nav (did ask for directions once along the way).

When we arrived we were offered a drink (offered and not charged for) to sit for a few minutes and soak up the atmosphere before being shown to our room. We sat on the terrace had a drink and were then shown to our room which was the end room of a converted stone cottage away from the restaurant area. As it was the first week of October no air con was needed, the stone walls kept the room nice and cool, and there was a mosquito net on the window.

We booked an evening meal that night (that's what Agriturismo's are all about for us) and it was fabulous. Just dish after dish of local home cooked food coming out to try alongside wine and water until the point we felt we couldn't eat anymore. Finished off with home made liqueurs made the short moonlit walk back to our cottage much needed to try to walk off some of the food.

When we left the next day we were shown a different route down off the hill which was a far easier road and we were waved off happy, relaxed and ready for the rest of our Sicilian tour.

NB a MUST for this area is mosquito spray and some post bite cream. It's in the hills, it's balmy and it is mosquito territory.

Room Tip: The stone cottages were lovely but older and further from the restaurant. If you want close to the r...

we stayed four nights at Santa Margherita and it was pretty great. the view across the bay and of the aeolian islands is just amazing. the staff are very friendly and helpful and dinner is fantastic, they have a different set menu every night and you are guaranteed to leave the dinner table very full of fresh good food.. and quite tipsy as they are very generous with wine and delicious after-dinner liqueurs. it might be that we got quite lucky with what they chose to cook, but it was great. Breakfast is really nothing special though and the rooms are quite basic, and not cleaned every day... but that's probably reflected in the extremely good value price tag! Be warned that this is a difficult place to get to.. all the way up a steep windy mountain path so it's very limiting in terms of going out and about to nearby towns etc. It's definitely an experience worth having though so maybe the best way forward would be to book in a two or three nights stay before moving to somewhere more accessible in gioiosa marea/messina or other nearby towns.

Room Tip: We were in the tennis cabin, which is separate from the rest of the building, the wire mesh to keep...

There are two good things about this place:

1.price tag
2.nice panoramic view of the sea from above the hill.

Breakfast was Ok (freshly pressed orange juice was very nice). Lunches/dinners were nothing special, although edible.

Now the bad things:

1.pictures posted here and on booking.com are completely misleading, the reality is VERY different (to the worse).

2.the "swimming pools" are actually two reservoirs of smelly green water, looks like neither has EVER been cleaned at all (do not believe the pictures!).

3.the "tennis court" has known better times two, now it's just a space with uneven surface, not fit for anything meaningful.

4.rooms vary in quality and distance from the breakfast room. The 2 bunghalows look newest and least worn.

5.friendliness of staff varies greatly, some personalities would easily go into "not possible" mode while others would try to work out some solution.

6.location is really in the middle of nowhere, do not even think of going without a car, peferably a 4x4 one.
