Oh my god the crinkly old bar maid who gave us a menu and then said we haven't got most of what is on there so we probably won't have what you want to order. The food was awful I went for bangers and mash thinking they'd have to go some to spoil this well it tasted like packet potato and had 3 pokey little sausages £5.75 what a joke wife decided to get a glass of wine which they didn't even bother to bring and then as we were leaving gave us the oh did i forget your wine. considering we were the only family in there was about as rubbish as you can get. AVOID!!!!
I recently ate at the restaurant as part of a large (35+) party and found the food and service very good. All the meals came out on time and had been freshly prepared and well presented on the plate. The decor of the restaurant was very tasteful with a nice friendly atmosphere. If you are passing through Penkridge, this is well worth a visit.
The dining area appears to have been recently repainted (not very professionally!) and refurnished, the restaurant offers a good range of freshly prepared items for lunch and dinner and there is a small enclosed patio at the rear.
However access to the bedrooms above the bar and dining room is poor and the decor of the rooms themselves is tired and lacking inspiration considering the price. The few finishing touches evident eg a clean room, a hairdryer and an average choice but well-presented and tastey breakfast (in addition to the usual eg TV, soap, shampoo, tea, coffee etc) would be insufficient to encourage our return.
Traffic noise tends to start early too so book a quieter room at the rear if you decide to stay here and are a light sleeper!
I stayed here for one night mid-week. Staff were not at all welcoming when I arrived. If you want to leave the hotel to walk into the village you have to go through the bar which is not comfortable. I was kept awake until midnight by a lot of noise downstairs which I assumed to be a staff party in the bar. I didn't like to go down and complain (there was no phone in the room) so resorted to banging hard on the floor and the noise stopped. The breakfast was good but staff were apathetic and stood around near the kitchen door and complained about work. The only pleasant person was the lady who came in to clean the rooms (the room was very clean). Overall, not a very good introduction to Staffordshire.
We stayed the night at this B&B for New Year and first impression was it seemed very old.
Entry and exit for the rooms were via the main bar which was a little uncomfortable.
Our room was at the rear of the building which has been added on and the room was clean and pleasant but with only a shower.
There was only a small rail to hang clothes on which was not level and no wardrobe.
This part of the building was very warm compared to the other rooms in the older part we walked past.
Breakfast was very nice however and we had a full english which was real value for money. Well done to the chef.
Service was poor though.
Would have thought we should have been shown where the cererals and fruit juices were and told to help ourselves.
On the day we booked out room service walked into our room without even knocking on the door and one of us were using the toilet.
My wife works at a large hotel in Chester so knows how to be treated as a customer
Overall fair and our fist ever visit.
Its an ideal location for the village and the local pubs.
We have added many reports on this web site and will continue to do so good and bad.
If it impressed us we would say we would return again but was missing that personal touch so dont think we will.
The owner informed us he had only been there less than 12 months.
If you read the report and add the 'extra' touches it will make customers stays more enjoyable
