“Strawberry Fields in Robin's Bay”
Reviewed March 13, 2012

After years of visiting Robin's Bay I finally went to Strawberry Fields for the day.
Its a beautiful place, unspoilt, with a great cook and friendly staff. Well done, Strawberry Fields, please don't change any which way!.

My boyfriend and I had an amazing time at Strawberry Fields Together (SFT)!

We planned a short 4-day, 4-night Jamaican escape for his birthday and Valentine’s Day. We're both environmentalists and big fan of outdoor adventures and unspoiled nature, so we knew we wanted to do an eco-tourist spot that was relatively un-discovered. We also love mingling with the local culture. Found SFT through a listing of certified eco-tourism spots and decided to make reservations.

Additionally, we were quite limited in budget, and wanted to stay under $1000 a person. Hence, we had some budgetary limitations, because eco-tourism spots - by nature of their target market and geographic isolation, automatically mean the incursion of extra costs that make them more expensive than traditional tourism venues. Keeping this in mind....

Transportation:
• Based on recommendations from Kim, we flew into Montego Bay. However, against Kim's suggestion, we decided to rent a car (the boy has drove for 3 yrs on the left-side, so we were confident that we could handle it). The reason was because the in-country taxi service charges A LOT for transport to SFT (it came out to $170 per person). The other option is to take the route taxis, but because SFT is so isolated, you would need to make 4 transfers via route taxi, and it's not always a safe bet that the route taxi won't try to take advantage of you.
• The rental (from Budget) was about $180 for the car for 5 days + $30 for insurance + $50 for gas used through the whole trip = approx $260. (Btw - highly recommend Budget - the people were so nice and thoroughly documented all pre-existing scratches on the car, so did not try to cheat us at all). So basically, we saved about $80 by renting.
• HOWEVER, the DOWNsides: driving in Jamaica is quite literally as scary as people say it is. And... Kim wasn't exaggerating about how bad the roads are to SFT. The drive, when done in daytime, with minimal traffic, by an experienced local driver would have easily taken 4 hours. We drove late at night (sun was down by 5 pm), the streets are NOT lit and signs are confusing, and the coastal highway has tendency to suddenly disappear (there were two sections where it was "washed out" - i.e. the hwy literally ceases to exist and becomes a gaping pit of death). Once you get off the coastal highway, there is still an hour long drive through an intense car-sized pot-holed single-lane country road. It's quite frankly AMAZING we made it through that drive alive.
• BUT the UPsides.... we got to stop at the world's best Jerk place "Scotchie’s" (the Ocho Rios location) - which alone made the trip to Jamaica worth it. AND, we had a lot more freedom - we took one day to drive to a nearby town of Annato Bay for groceries and exploring.

Arriving @ SFT
• So finally we arrived at SFT in the dead-of-the-night. We are greeted by 3 dogs barking insanely, a very tired looking rasta named Bryan (Everton’s brother who watches the front gate and takes care of their new organic garden). Bryan is trailed by an orphan baby goat who treat’s Bryan as his mother. zOMG – adorable. We pull the car in, but can’t park it because, wouldn’t you believe it – there are 3 ponies standing on the driveway. Welcome to SFT :D

Hibiscus Cottage
• Originally, we reserved the Cockatiel Cottage, but Kim mentioned that Hibiscus had a new solar water heater installed, and a kitchen, so we thought we upgrade (for about USD 20 extra per night). Unfortunately, this will be my main complaint --- we never got to see what the Cockatiel Cottage looked like on the inside, so I don’t have a good point of reference, but a couple things that were disappointing of Hibiscus:
• (1) The Kitchen is NOT a kitchen – there is a portable electric “stove-top” thing that didn’t work sitting on an old marble top with a few plates and cups. The coffee maker was so dirty, that even after we washed it, when we boiled water in it, we got a brown murky water out of it. There is a small mini-fridge, so that was nice I guess, to keep water cold, but not really necessary.
• (2) The bathroom is INCREDIBLY tiny and rather old. The Solar water heater (for the shower and sink) gave off a very very low stream of water, and went from scalding hot to freezing cold with no option in between. However, at the end of our trip, we had a nice long conversation with Everton (the co-owner w Kim) and he explained that the Solar water heater was just installed days before we came and he thinks it wasn’t installed properly. Last we talked, he was going to change up the piping and fix the water flow and temperature issues.
• Summary: The Hibiscus cottage is basically a camping lodge – with limited amenities. We didn’t stay in one of their fancier luxury cottages – so we weren’t expecting much. We were pretty much expecting a camping cottage – so the Spartan nature of it wasn’t the problem. And I assume the bathroom issue is resolved once Evertone works out the kinks with the solar tech. I am only disappointed with one major thing – which was paying $20 extra per day for a “kitchen” which was unusable. I hope next time I go back, they’ll have fixed the kitchen….

Everything else at SFT was amazing! The location is a total gem – it can’t be beat for its natural beauty. AS a bday present, we went on the AVT guided tour with Everton to a beautiful waterfall in the mountains. That was TOTALLY worth it. We also took a couple hikes in the neighboring countryside on our own, and even spent one night playing dominoes with a bunch of local Rastas at a small rum shop a couple houses down from the SFT front gate.

OH, and one final thing – huge props go out to Jennifer and her kitchen staff. We had all of our meals prepared by Jennifer @ SFT and it was SO WORTH IT. The food was amazing, from fresh fish to jerk to coconut pancakes, fruit, and a really special Jamaica style breakfast made with salt-fish & a local version of spinach. For the boy’s bday dinner, Jennifer made us a lovely Thai-style coconut curry with chicken. And we ordered a beautiful Cassava cake from Kim’s friend. Kim & Everton were really nice to set-up a wood fire, and then joined us for cake and coffee after.

All-in-all, the trip was amazing and I highly recommend you take the time to check out SFT yourself. Everton’s got some ambitious plans for place. While we were there, they were building a new restaurant (with a wood fire grill for pizza!), a new bar area, and Everton’s planning to remodel a bunch of houses. He’s also planning to take the whole place off the grid, and maybe even with an intention to farm and produce the resort’s food as self-containing. The boy and I can’t wait to come back in a couple years to see he’s work! Next time, maybe we’ll get to learn to make goat-milk… :D

The perfect escape from a busy world, privet beaches unbelievable views and even better adventure. This trip was a great opportunity to see the real Jamaica and get away from the busy resorts. Many different adventures to choose from all of which offer something different and exciting my personal favorite was the the hike to the secluded waterfall and black sand beach.

Thanks to Kim and Everton for being great hosts and sharing all their stories with us!

I have been to a few places..but let me tell you..

Strawberry Fields Together has been an experience you'd have to experience for yourself to appreciate.
World Class Customer Service manifest in the genuinely warm and friendly personalities of the employees.
The Food was simply.... (I'm still savouring...)
KFC has absolutely nothing on their fried chicken...which is both crunchy n nice without oil draining from the skin.
Their coconut pancakes..first experience tasting this..but absolutely love
Brown Stewed Chicken...mmmmm...still licking my fingers

THE ATV MOUNTAIN BIKES.... OMG OMG OMG I SOOO NEED TO GO BACK JUST FOR THIS!!!!!!!

Breath-taking ocean views

I could go on and on but i'd like you (reader) to experience for yourself...

Strawberry Fields Together was just what my husband and I were looking for to get away for a few days of rest and relaxation from the cold north winds. The staff was friendly and accommodating - the environment serene, peaceful and absolutely beautiful. Everton and Kim our hosts extend themselves to make the visit an experience to enjoy. The food a Jamaican delight. The eco-tour through the bush to a truly awesome waterfall - with a lunch prepared by our bush guide and cook, Trevor was a highlight.

Arriving from Mobay after a very long journey from Sweden it didn´t take long before the whole family were in a relaxed and chilled out state of mind, body and soul. We stayed in the well appointed Cockiatel cabin just recently painted in bright caribbean colours. Both of us adults being huge fans of jamaican food we got to sample fantastic breakfasts and dinners on our porch brought to us by the proud, creative and friendly chefs Jennifer and Marcia. The kitchen came handy since our three and five year old kids mainly ate pasta and alike. The owners Kim and Everton made us feel at home and we appreciate their warmth, local knowledge and engagement in the local community. Often we had the secluded white sand cove all for ourselves and the kids loved splashing in the turqoise water. This is a slice of the real Jamaica million lightyears away from the busy resort areas. We loved every minute of it!
