“On the edge”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 17, 2012

This place is on the edge in more senses than one. Absolutely outstanding location hanging on the edge of the gorge but completely unprepared for guests in cold weather - it was on the edge of being wholly unaceptable. The night we stayed (we are mid 50s) it was full with a tour of teenagers so felt on the edge of being a hostel not a hotel. There are two signs outside - one says "Auberge" the other says "Hotel" I guess it is on the edge! On arrival we went to a freezing cold room - although the heating was on I suspect someone had switched it on as we came through the door. After the power blew - twice - we were taken to another freezing cold room. The first room had one damp towel, the second had none but there was a line of damp towels strung along the inside/outside balcony corridor access to our room. We arrived at dinner at the prescribed time - no menu or choice, but the standard Tajine was well prepared. The dining room was freezing again; everyone in coats and outdoor clothes. There was a large fireplace with just one log smouldering in it. With all the young people huddled around it, what little heat it gave out had no chance of reaching the rest of the room. We asked for towels twice - at 9pm two damp towels appeared. By the morning the room was warm. If this place had been warm it would have just merited a "good" but cold it barely made average - saved by the stunning location.

Room Tip: If you must go in winter phone first to insist heating is on well in advance and take thermals.

I loved it here--admittedly, we came in winter and it was FREEZING, but the food was great, showers were hot, and a constant fire was blazing in the dining room. It is worth the additional cost for a heater if you want to have a more comfortable stay. The staff was incredibly friendly as well and open to conversation. They get a lot of large groups on tours, so not the best place for smaller couples to relax.

This is one of the most disappointing hotels I have ever stayed in. In the guide book it sounds quite pleasant, don't be fooled!! The rooms are freezing and you have to pay for a tiny heater, the rooms have no character and smell musty, the hotel was dirty, the tap didn't turn off, the loo filled up continuously, the bed was damp from the cold, there were no curtains, the towels were thin and the pillows were like sleeping on bricks. It needs a lot of money spent on it. The food was ok but they only had one waiter serving 50 people so the service was slow and rushed. We stayed here with a tour so didn't have a choice where we stayed but if travelling independently avoid; especially in the winter!

This kind of looks like your average on-the-road hotel: not very atmospheric and it has very basic rooms which felt like they could use a paint job, though they were very clean which was good. The fireplace in the hallway was a nice touch and the breakfast was good. We also had dinner there which was not bad either. Staff was friendly and helpful. The best part about this hotel is the terrace and its location right in the Dades gorge which guarantees you some gorgeous views! Handy small shop next door to get stocked up for the rest of your trip.

We spent one night here on an arranged tour. The hotel is in an attractive location with views up and down the Dades Gorge, and the rooms are of average quality and cleanliness. But the food is terrible and the service is worse. We were provided with one towel for five people. When I asked the desk for more, I was given three dry and one wet towel. When I protested about the wet towel, the desk clerk tried to argue that there was not problem, as it had just come off the clothes line. I insisted to have it replaced and was treated like I was making an ridiculous request.

The china in the eating room--to call it anything more would be excessive--is chipped. None of the coffee cups at breakfast service had an intact handle, some of the silverware was still dirty. It's clear that no one is making more than the minimum effort to keep this place going, and you're best off avoiding it.

This hotel was chosen for us by our tour guide as part of our excursion to Southern Morocco and the Sahara, as it was one of the hotels in the Dades Gorge that was popular with the tourists. I had read some bad reviews here so I was a bit concerned, but figured we were only there for 1 night so it was worth saving some money. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised at the condition of the rooms and the bathroom. The room was very spacious, and it had air conditioning. It was clean and quiet at night. We visited in the summer, so I cannot comment about how the heating is in the winter. In our room rate we had included dinner and breakfast. Usually, hotel food is not the best, and usually catered to tourists, but this hotel had fairly authentic Moroccan dishes (probably the best crochettes we had in Morocco), and it was plentifull. Breakfast was also ok - typical with breads, pancakes, tea, coffee and fruit. The bathrooms were nice, and clean, but the only thing that was dissapointing after a long journey was barely any water pressure and no hot water. I think it had something to do with all the tourist coming at the same time and showering at the same time because the hot water returned later in the evening. Pressure however stayed the same. That would be my only complaint about this hotel. The back of the hotel rests right on the Gorge and it has beautiful views of the Valley and the river. They have no internet or phone available. The staff was nice. If this hotel is included in your tour, I wouldn't recommend against it - as it saved us some money, and to me it was probably close to the 'luxury' option that we passed up for the savings.

due to a last minute change we ended up in this hotel which was supposed to be very good. the superior rooms were dark, dirty and old. we asked for another room, that one was a little bit better, at least brighter, but had half fallen curtains, the door had known better days and the bathroom as well. it was huge though, with a large double bed and 2 single beds. we had a private balcony overlooking the river which was nice. The location in itself is beautiful let's be honest. the restaurant again was dark and not so clean...the food was so-so. according to our guide, the owners have another much newer and nicer hotel a bit further on the road
