Definitely and by far the best hotel in this region. After all, it is the only 5-star. Rooms are spacious, bathrooms well designed, all rooms offering massage shower cabins, all but single rooms also a Jacuzzi with the stinking »black« thermal water tap beside the usual hot water one. Reception staff extremely kind and helpful, room service faultless. Spa facilities possibly the finest in Slovenia. All in all, highly recommended.
Hotels also offers two restaurants. And herein lies the problem. There is a huge one for the halfboard guests, where also breakfast is served; actually, not served – it is buffet style, but offering truly a wide, wide choice for almost entire range of guests (not Japanese). In the evening the huge space is a nightmare designed probably by the architects of the old socialist school – an unpalatable dining hall for hundreds of undemanding Austrian or German pensionists coming for a cheap week in a five star hotel. Huge, cold, impersonal, boring. Food for dinner is not bad at all, but as it is again the infamous buffet style, what can one expect? Service mixed, some waiters showing very obvious resentment to their work, and doing their very best to avoid all but the unevitable workload. Some, led in example by the F&B Manager, truly excellent.
The other one is the pride and the shame of the hotel. A-la-carte restaurant Prestige. The young chef is responsible for both restaurants, but clearly he can only show his talent and philosophy in this small temple of gourmet cuisine, definitely the best in the region, being rivalled solely by Rajh some 10 miles away. Both the chef and his souschef have done their apprenticeships in Michelin starred restaurants, and are entirely up to the challenge. Local ingredients and tradition nicely interwoven with an haute cuisine influence. 16 out of 20 for cuisine. Also service is faultless. Wine list relatively short, but some entries and all markups pleasantly surprising .
Why the shame? Due to the structure of their clientele, going for cheap package deals, and due to the local specificities, there are very few people coming for the culinary delights of the place. So it is closed most of the time, unless bookings have been made in advance. If you want to lunch there, you need to book your table in the morning. For dinner, by 1PM. Why on Earth does the owner (a major Slovenian financial holding, doing also tourism) have such an excellent restaurant to have it used at 5% of its capacity?
