“Lovely old English pub/hotel”
Reviewed May 9, 2012

Looking for place to overnight south of Peterborough and discovered the Lion. Its a lovely old English pub/hotel, which is full of character having been built originally in 1492. I stayed overnight as a solo and took advantage of an upgrade from single to double at no extra cost. I had room 3 which was delightful as it had a 4 poster bed and a very large walk in en-suite. This room was directly over the bar area so had some background noise but not enough to be offputting. Due to the age of the place the floors are distinctly uneven but that was part of the joy.
Breakfast was lovely, well cooked and well presented. The staff were also very friendly. One minor critism was that car parking is somewhat limited and while OK on the night I was there, I could imagine that it might be a problem when very busy although there is plenty of street parking. All in all very good.

Room Tip: See my comment about room 3

We booked our Dutch distbruitor in the hotel. He stated that it was one of the best hotels he had stayed in. I eat an evening meal and breakfast here which was 1st class and very good value for money. The service is second to name and a credit to the hotel. I would recommend this hotel/restaurant to anyone

Reading the last review I would say immediately that the George Hotel across the road is over twice the price of the Lion - of course if you have an expense account that maybe ok but not if it is out of your own pocket.
The overall experience of a 2 night stay at the Lion was brilliant - such friendly staff - the best we have met in a long time. The room was large and very warm with a spacious bathroom. Everywhere was very clean. The downstairs area including the bar has a lovely atmosphere - old world style with a log fire.
It is centuries old so must need a lot of upkeep so inevitably is a little shabby in places but this does not distract from the overall enjoyment. We would give it 5 stars except the menu was too expensive and too rich for us. To me it cries out for some basic pub grub rather than attempting to be more gourmet than it needs. That means going to the Vine nearby or into St Neots which is a bit annoying on a cold winters night. Other than that we would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Our room was above the bar so was abit noisy until 11.30 so a room at the back might be better. How...

I stayed for one night on a business trip, I have also stayed at the George across the road and The Lion is certainly a poor relation.

I thought it was rather expensive (£75) for what I got, the room was cold and the bedding didn't look, smell or feel terribly clean.

It wasn't a terrible stay but I wouldn't stay again.

Stayed 1 night along with 3 adult members of my family along and a 3 week old baby, 7 year old and 15 year old. Staff were attentive and went out of their way to deal with our various needs. The rooms are a bit dated, but the friendly staff and wonderful character of the place easily made up for this. Food was homely and the beer just perfect (Adnams!) Give me rustic over 'chic' anytime!

Stayed here for a night while our son was at Papworth Hospital (about 20 mins away). Very nice room in the annexe but we were advised to stay in either room 1 or 6 next time as these had wonderful old features at no extra charge. The staff were pleasant and helpful and the food was fantastic, it was not surprising that they had a lot of local trade as well as hotel guests - and this was a week night.
Would recommend this to anyone and will stay here again if we're ever in the area.

Room Tip: We were advised that rooms 1 and 6 had lots of old features.
