This was our second visit here, and we wondered if the high standard we found the first time could possibly be kept up. It was! The St Aidan suite is roomy and very comfortable, and the breakfasts are first class, and far better than any hotel will provide. Your hosts go out of their way to ensure that everything is just right, and if you can find any fault here you must be very hard to please.

Thanks. We especially like to welcome guests back again. Highest accolade we can have is when someone wants to come and stay again and again.

We have just spent three nights at Number One and is really is Number One in anyone's chart. The welcome was wonderful with tea and cakes outside on the patio, the room was superb, better than a five star room, nothing was left to chance even having full sized toiletries instead of little bottles. This made us feel as though we were members of the family instead of paying guests. The breakfasts were superb and plentiful. Christine and Richard were perfect hosts, nothing was too much trouble for them. We had full use of the lounge and used it to meet up with our friends before going out to the local hostelries and also when we got back for a night time tipple. It was absolutely wonderful. Thank you so much for a wonderful, memorable break.

Room Tip: Both rooms are very comfortable but the St Austins room was out of this world with an enormous bed...

We usually stay in hotels when we take short breaks but chanced upon the TripAdvisor reviews for No 1 Springfield while looking for accommodation for a few days cycling in Northumberland. How fortunate we were. From booking enquiries to their final efforts to ensure we had somewhere dry to spend a very wet last day, Christine and Richard could not do enough for us. Christine even met us when we arrived at Alnmouth station to take the heaviest of our luggage back to No 1 so that we could enjoy our first days cycling without having to carry all of our gear.

We spent two nights in the St Aidan Room and it was quite simply the most comfortable room we've ever stayed in away from home. Spacious and airy, with a fabulously comfortable bed and a wonderful bathroom, it gave the sort of comfort that so many hotels aspire to and fail to deliver. All of the finishes and accessories in the room were of a really high standard and the attention to detail was faultless.

In the morning you can enjoy the delights of a really hearty breakfast, starting with cereals, yoghurt and porridge, moving on through a platter of freshly cut fruit, to the delights of the full english. Everything was superbly presented and beautifully cooked. As soon as I met Christine I knew that I could have confidence that this was a lady who would produce a supremely wonderful poached egg and so it proved. On the first day we showed some restraint (we spend a lot of time in hotels because of my husband's job and know how easy it is to over order, but on the second morning we were slightly greedier....we knew how good it was going to be!).

Richard and Christine are a mine of information about the local area and also have a wonderful array of books, maps, walking and cycling guides for guests to borrow. They can point you in the direction of interesting days out and tell you where the best real ale is on tap. We enjoyed both of their recommendations for places to eat very much. A word of caution; although we live in a rural area we were unprepared for the vagaries of obtaining a taxi back from Alnmouth to Longhoughton. If you are planning a night out without the car (or in our case bikes) have a word with Richard and Christine first and make your travel arrangements before you go out. We'd tried 10 taxi numbers before we finally found one!

It was all the little touches that made No 1 so special; crystal glasses, nice linen, china cups and mugs in the room, there was even a teapot for proper tea on the tray. It has definitely converted us to the way of the B&B. We really can't recommend it highly enough.

Room Tip: The St Aidan Suite is a wonderful choice for a romantic break.

Thank you so much for your kind words,
We try to make folk feel at home, but its reassuring to hear that our guests enjoy our accomodation.

Now, if we can only provide the weather to match - But wait - all this week the BBC said 'Rain' and we provided 'sunny' here on the Heritage Coast, so maybe we do!

I booked this accommodation because of its online reviews and its proximity to the Northumbrian Coastal Path and was absolutely delighted. On arrival, I was made to feel comfortable and very welcome, with a lovely pot of tea in front of the homely log burning stove in the guest lounge. Nothing was too much trouble for Christine and Richard and their grown up daughter Lindsey, who run the B&B, and it did not take me long to feel that I had arrived at a home away from home.
My room, the St Cuthberts Room, was very new and absolutely immaculate with a lovely en suite, super comfy bed and all home comforts. I slept like a log!
Just a few minutes off the A1 at the Alnwick Gardens turn off (the directions on Number One's website were excellent and got me there straightaway) and within minutes of the beautiful coastline, I heartily recommend that anyone seeking B and B accommodation in this area should try Number One Springfield.

Thank you.
You did'nt mention that you slept like a log because you completed the coastal marathon in aid of charity. We were full of admiration, and we hope to welcome you back for a more restful weekend!.

What a marvellous discovery! We had been invited to celebrate a good friend's birthday in Longhoughton and discovered Number One on the internet, enabling us to enjoy the birthday party without being too abstemious; the party venue being merely a short walk away.
We were greeted on arrival by Christine, who took us to the Aidan's suite, which is infinitely superior to many a 5 star hotel. The layout, space and luxurious bathroom demonstrated that much thought had been given to all amenities; lighting, mirrors, hooks in the bathroom, warm and cosy bathrobes and the strongest power shower which we've ever encountered (including our own!).
The breakfast was delicious, with a wide selection of breakfast goodies and friendly conversation with Christine, Richard being delegated to some serious man-work. We did meet up with him for a chat, and he and my husband had so many interests in common that it 'll be inevitable that we return in order to continue their discussion of ships and trains and aeroplanes...Serendipity.

Room Tip: Opt for the Aidan Suite for sheer indulgence.

Thanks for the kind words, we like all our guests to feel welcome, and it's a joy when we're able to share some common passions for old ships and aviation, shoes and ships and sealing wax. Welcome back anytime.

Very surprised To find such excellent accommodation in longhoughton. Attention to detail is outstanding, elegant and tasteful decor - all in excellent condition including the bathroom with a very strong shower. The only downside is the wifi ( very slow), tv which only works intermittently despite switching off all our electrics - ie iPads, iPhones etc. and the rubber pillows.

Room Tip: We stayed in st Aidan's suite which is very spacious and well furnished with plenty of storage.

Thanks for your review, we like our guests to enjoy their stay with us and are pleased that you found the accommodation to be of such a high standard.

We were disappointed to hear your concerns with the WiFi. The WiFi runs as fast as is possible in our rural location, which we regularly check, but BT just don't have fibre and high speed connnections to the village so it will never match the speed experienced in city centres. As you were staying over Christmas it is possible that the entire area was also trying to browse the 'net.'. Our location also means that transmitting devices can cause pixellation of digital TV pictures, and as we mentioned, experince suggests that the only safe Apple transmitter is one which is powered off, and not just quiescent. Reception is pretty stable otherwise.

As to the pillows, we don't own any rubber pillows. We use hyper-allergenic man made fibre pillows, which are renewed each year. We are sorry if you did not find them suitable. We always ask guests if everything is OK and we are disappointed that you made no mention of this during your three day stay. For those who prefer it feather pillows are available on request, as we say in the room information, please ask.

I'd planned to tell you all about the facilities, comfort, welcome, breakfast and generally just how good Number One is, and then I read the previous reviews. Its all there, if you think you need to read it.

We've stayed in a lot of B&Bs over the last 8 years or so and just a couple of months ago we thought we'd found the best one ever. Number One beats it, it truly is the best of the best.

There, that's it, nothing more to add except to advise you to go there and experience it for yourself.

Room Tip: St Aidan's is the larger of the two rooms available but St Cuthbert is quieter as its away from...
