Blue Tribes Garden Beach Resort
Ranked #20 of 30 Ko Lipe B&B and Inns
Reviewed January 20, 2013

Ko Lipe is a stunning island. I first went there in 2010 and have just been again in Jan 2013. I stayed at a couple of places on my first visit, including Blue Tribes, and returned to Blue Tribes recently. First I'll discuss the hotel, then Ko Lipe in general.

A few things. Blue Tribes' location is prime, on Pattaya beach. The huts are set back from the beach so are peaceful, even when the music is blaring. It's a short walk to everything (but so are most places on Ko Lipe). The huts themselves are rustic which is actually quite pleasant these days but the prices don't really reflect that. Our room was fan-only but the dark wood meant it wasn't ever too hot. Although the fan is really badly positioned and it could probably have done with having two of them. The problems I have with Blue Tribes are with the staff. The manager swans around with his tatts out and his little shorts and I could just smell the testosterone on him, it was gross. He wasn't ever unfriendly, but he was pretty unapproachable and you could just tell he thought he was amazing - GROSS. The restaurant is a little expensive compared to others and sells mainly Italian food - who wants pasta in Thailand, seriously? And it was empty every night, probably for that reason. So blue Tribes is good accommodation and I think the owner's ethos is right, just the management isn't. IT made it a bit uncomfortable actually. I might stay there again though as the accommodation is good. My only gripe there is that during an 8 day stay, the room wasn't cleaned once. That's pretty slack for the price and duration.

Ko Lipe in general is stunning. I really recommend it. You'll love it. The food isn't as good as other islands in Thailand (and we ate in quite a few places) and like most good places in Thailand, it's suffering from over-visitation, has a rubbish problem and looks like the growth will continue to sky-rocket. There's a big campaign to Save Koh Lipe, fronted by Pooh's and they need to work harder because with the island's beauty, it won't be long until the place goes the way of Ko Samet and Ko Samui and loses it's charm.

Room Tip: Get a garden hut if you can, they are nice and peaceful and you don't share a veranda.

Our holiday in Koh Lipe started with an owfull hotel...and continues with a terrible night on the Blue tribes Resort!
We found a room in this hotel for 2000 bath..all island was full but here (now I know why) have rooms free.
Bed sheet was dirty, broken, toilet dirty and water with unusual brown colour and smelly!!
No mosquito net on the bed and we fuond a couple of ticks on the bed!!!
My girlfriend and me have many bites on the legs...
In the morning we had to spoke with the manager Luca, very unfrendly,to ask money back because we want to check out and have refund about 2 more days payed...
The owner Luca suddenly start to shout us and threaten us to go away from HIS land otherwise
he call the staff to take us out....
We went away without refund...for no having problems...really unbelievable!!
Dont go this hotel.
our big mistake was not booking in advance and we only found poor hotels with bad rooms on our arrival.

Room Tip: Tap water is brown and smelly..

We stayed 10 nights in Jan 2012.
We booked a Garden Terrace Room, when we arrived there were NO mossie nets to be see the first night we slept without but the room was so poorly ventilated and we were eaten alive!!

4th night after mentioning it more than once we did fianlly get a mossie net, however it didnt fit overly well, but was better than nothing!

The rooms are very dated and having stayed in other resorts on Koh Lipe (4th visit) think this is the poorest we have stayed in and NOT that cheap.

Only ate here once as we thought it was a tad expensive and not all that special there are certainly much better places to eat on Lipe.

This resort needs some money spending on it before it would get me to visit again.

However it has a great location onto the pure white sands.

We stayed at Blue Tribes, after having read an article highly recommending Koh Lipe and this particular resort in German women's magazine 'Brigitte'. First off, Koh Lipe is nothing like a laid back and peaceful island anymore. It has been taken over by the international party crowd and apart from that has a major waste problem not only inland but sadly also on its beaches. Secondly, we must say that we were shocked with Blue Tribes. Very basic bungalows without anything nice about them. Hard beds with dirty sheets & pillows, cockroaches, no mosquito net, no a/c, not enough space to put clothes, etc., ... and the resort situated on the loudest part of the noisiest beach (Pattaya) with bass drums until 4am every night! Furthermore, no daily room cleaning and no breakfast, all that while the staff lazily hang around the reception area, when they could instead clean up rooms or maybe redecorate the restaurant area, so maybe someone would want to eat there. To be honest, at 400Baht/night we wouldn't have expected more, but our rooms cost around 2400Baht each, and for that kind of money, we've seen much better in Thailand. Clearly, if nothing major changes around this place, it will surely run out of guests soon.

We stayed for 7 night in February 2012 en really enjoyed our stay at Blue Tribes. Let's start out with the pro's:

- Ko Lipe and it's surrounding island are extremely beautifull!
- the owner (Luca) and staff are very friendly and their attitude is very relaxed
- the pizza's are expensive but the best we had in Thailand.
- we had the beach-front bungalow - not exactly on the beach but 10 mtrs away. The bungalow was good for Thai standards. Clean, a nice porch, fine bed. Just basic wood/concrete. All you need on an island.

However, there were some downsides
- the price, which is very high for Thai standards. We paid 2300 THB/night (discount for staying 7 nights) and the bungalow was just basic. However, all the other hotels in Ko Lipe were just as expensive I found out.
- the most important one: THE NOISE. We were in high-high season (the whole island was full) and all the beach on Pattaya did a contest which music was the loudest. Weekdays to 1.00, but on friday and saturday to 3.00. We are young, and don't mind a party once in a while, but this was just too much. The bungalows are wooden and since they're right on the beach next to the bars you can hear every word and beat in a song. We couldn't sleep without earplugs and just relaxed reading a book on the porch was not possible. Very frustrating because we expected paradise (just came from Ko Phi Phi) but in this way the bars are raping this beautifull island. I'm afraid that in a few years Ko Lipe will be just as Ko Phi Phi town.
- the same for the boats. Pattaya beach is extremely beautfull. However, you can only swim on 30% and the other 70% is taken by longtail and speedboats. So there goes the nice view :(

--> my advise: go to sunrise beach. The beach is less beautifull, but you have less boats and almost no bars. Or, go in low season. With some discount on the rooms and the bars closed you will have a great island and a great bungalow

Note 1: bring your own musquito-net. We had one, but me & my girlfriend still managed get stung lots of times. Also my girlfriend picked up Dengue-fever here.
Note 2: you have to ask for cleaning, it's not automatic. We found this out after four nights ;)

Room Tip: Take one in the back. I guess you'll hear less of the music.

Set in an ideal location next to the Bundhaya Resort on Pattaya Beach in Ko Lipe, very easy to find once you step off of the speedboat. That's pretty much the only good thing about Bluetribes, is its' location. It has some bungalows right at the top of the beach, most are a very short walk from the beach, under 30 metres I'd say. The standard rooms are very basic, two beds (one double, one single) a fan, a bedside table and a shelf. No desk, AC, TV, Internet, closet, and the single light was the dimmest I've ever seen which was kind of annoying at times. The floors are old wood so bringing pets shouldn't be an issue. The bathroom was very drab and water was brown, I didn't bother showering at all during my stay because of this. No hot water. Each bungalow has a porch with a couple of triangle pillows and mats. Hotel staff was somewhat helpful. The island itself is amazing, especially Sunrise Beach. Expect to see double to triple the regular price for most things from shops (e.g. bottled water, toothpaste). Plenty of good restaurants that aren't too rough on the wallet. If you have a TrueMove SIM card, it won't work here (as of November 7th, 2011). Bring a DTAC SIM if it's imperative for you to have mobile access. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place unless you get an irresistable offer.
