Ko Lipe is a stunning island. I first went there in 2010 and have just been again in Jan 2013. I stayed at a couple of places on my first visit, including Blue Tribes, and returned to Blue Tribes recently. First I'll discuss the hotel, then Ko Lipe in general.
A few things. Blue Tribes' location is prime, on Pattaya beach. The huts are set back from the beach so are peaceful, even when the music is blaring. It's a short walk to everything (but so are most places on Ko Lipe). The huts themselves are rustic which is actually quite pleasant these days but the prices don't really reflect that. Our room was fan-only but the dark wood meant it wasn't ever too hot. Although the fan is really badly positioned and it could probably have done with having two of them. The problems I have with Blue Tribes are with the staff. The manager swans around with his tatts out and his little shorts and I could just smell the testosterone on him, it was gross. He wasn't ever unfriendly, but he was pretty unapproachable and you could just tell he thought he was amazing - GROSS. The restaurant is a little expensive compared to others and sells mainly Italian food - who wants pasta in Thailand, seriously? And it was empty every night, probably for that reason. So blue Tribes is good accommodation and I think the owner's ethos is right, just the management isn't. IT made it a bit uncomfortable actually. I might stay there again though as the accommodation is good. My only gripe there is that during an 8 day stay, the room wasn't cleaned once. That's pretty slack for the price and duration.
Ko Lipe in general is stunning. I really recommend it. You'll love it. The food isn't as good as other islands in Thailand (and we ate in quite a few places) and like most good places in Thailand, it's suffering from over-visitation, has a rubbish problem and looks like the growth will continue to sky-rocket. There's a big campaign to Save Koh Lipe, fronted by Pooh's and they need to work harder because with the island's beauty, it won't be long until the place goes the way of Ko Samet and Ko Samui and loses it's charm.
