The end of the story first: For any return visit to Alaçatı or the Çeşme peninsula, Sedirli Ev is the only place I’d stay. In fact, if there wasn’t a room available, I’d try to change my travel dates rather than stay somewhere else.
Now from the start: when we first arrived at Sedirli Ev, we were a bit worried we had made a wrong choice. It’s in a new building, outside of the historic center of town, and at the edge of town, closer to the elevated highway and the bus depot than we’d usually ever consider. But once we settled in, saw the attractive back yard with its unusual curved pool, wandered through the house and the comfortable, spacious guest rooms and — most importantly — chatted with Zeynep, we knew we had chosen wisely. Yes, Zeynep has filled her place with photos, collectibles, quirky stuff, but so have so many, many forgettable B&Bs and inns. But Zeynep’s genuine welcome, warmth and openness are unmatched anyplace I’ve stayed, from New England to New Zealand to China. We felt as if we were staying at the home of the close friend of a close friend who we somehow had never met before.
Our stay at Zeynep’s home — I even think of it that way, rather than “at Sedirli Ev” — was completely relaxing. Breakfast poolside featured preserves made by Zeynep’s mother, home-cured olives, cheeses, fruits, home-baked bread: two of us were served easily enough for four. Our second day there, Zeynep mentioned that sometimes, if guests are interested, she makes dinner. After we went to the wonderful local bazaar just a few blocks away, I mentioned to her that among the great-looking thing we saw were beautiful sardines from Cesme. That night, Zeynep’s incredibly delicious dinner — one of the best we had anywhere in Turkey — centered around those sardines grilled by Zeynep’s friend at the poolside barbecue, served along with a copious spread of vegetables, salads and fruit, with the rakı and wine flowing. And several of Zeynep’s longtime friends joined us around the table for dinner: it was all a perfect dinner at home, everything we could have hoped for but something so rare to encounter.
