“This pub used to be so much better- shame”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 27, 2013

Pimms just tasted of water. Main meal tasted nice at the time but gave us both indigestion later. Ordered a Sundae which turned out to be just a bowl of ice-cream...nothing else. This was served to us completely melted and had to be sent back. Our waitress was great but the other waiting staff were adorned with facial piercings. Not a good look! This pub used to be so much better-shame :-(

“Faultless food and service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 25, 2013

We visited tonight for birthday celebrations. Our meals were all faultless and the service was excellent. Very friendly staff all round. We have been here a number of times now and have never left feeling short changed. An excellent pub with better than you might expect food. The Vegetarian specials board has something for everyone. A lovely evening, we all left happily stuffed! Will definitely continue to return to this lovely relaxed pub/restaurant.

“Good, but could do better”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2013

Visited the Friars Oak on Saturday as we've just moved in around the corner. It's a little 'countrified' and trying to be an authentic country pub but obviously a chain. However the greeting at the door & bar were friendly & professional. The menu has all the pin favourites and some more foodie stuff also. The wine was good & resonably priced.

There were a couple of hiccups - a Brie & onion marmarlade brûlée, without any onion marmalade or brûlée, lettuce which needed washing again, and a chicken, ham & leek pie which was a little lacking in more than one piece of chicken or ham. Or leek.

Our waitress was lovely however, and the chocolate pots & doughnuts with tea and coffee were wonderful. And they nearly undercharged us.

Would give it one more try, but it could do so much better on the food side. How about loosening up on the large corporate menu and letting the chef create something unique & tasty?

“Eton Mess without strawberries!!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 6, 2013

I regularly meet friends in this pub and have tried most things on the menu. The food is consistently poor and the service is slow. Last night when I queried why I only found 1 very small strawberry sliced up in the Eton Mess the waitress told me in quite a condescending manner that actually it is a desert that doesn't contain a lot of strawberries. I pointed out that I couldn't eat it as it seemed to be just a big glass full of cream. Once again she insisted this was the recipe, that there was only one scoop of ice cream (ice cream? I wasn't expecting that to be in it!) along with a creamy strawberry flavoured mousse. It doesn't sound like a traditional Eton Mess to me - just a Mess! If they are going to add their own 'twist' to recipes they need to explain this on the menu or maybe just call it something else.

“Very good for a chain pub”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 31, 2013

We've visited The Friars Oak on three occasions now and not been disappointed on any of them. Today, the wife and I were passing and decided on a spur of the moment late lunch. It's Friday, so Fish and Chips were de rigueur and The Friars Oak have a very good fish menu on a Friday. We settled for a simple Haddock, Chips and Peas, which came quickly, with all the add on sauces available, it was piping hot and very tasty. For afters we both chose Eton Mess, but to be honest we didn't really need it, as we were full up after the first course.
The staff were welcoming, amenable, cheerful and efficient. The surroundings are clean and relaxing. What more could you ask for?
Thoroughly recommended.
