Cardamom House is a long way from anywhere. But the journey is worth every minute. A beautiful, tranquil setting; comfortable rooms; an immaculate pool; and far better personal service than you'll get in most five star hotels. This was our second visit and we were delighted to find that the team were still together and as friendly and efficient as we remembered.

The food, though a set menu, is very good. We are about to cook Pandi's Burmese chicken curry recipe which he gave us. But do remember that they do not have a drinks licence.

Do not go to Cardamom House if you want a bland top-tier hotel with all the facilities. But if you want a unique, informal, friendly experience that gives a real taste of rural southern India, there can be nowhere better.

We like to vary our accommodation when traveling - sometimes hotels, sometimes B&B's - we are not fussy but we do expect to get the type of accommodation advertised. Cardamom House is listed here on Tripadvisor as a hotel; it is not. However, as that is it's listing that is how we shall review it.

Cardamom House is in a beautiful valley with a view of one end of a large lake. It is set back a little from the lakeside but that really isn't an issue if you like a gentle walk as we do!

We are well traveled in India and are used to the fluctuating power supply and the need for generators. It's a shame that the noise was sometimes a little disturbing at night but I guess there's nothing that can be done about that in a rural area.

If this place was listed as a guest house, and charged guesthouse rates, it would be a great place, but as a hotel it is a bit of a let down. There is no reception desk, and while you can always find a member of staff if you need something during the day, I would expect a desk manned 24 hours a day in a hotel of this price range.

One reason why we vary our accommodation between B&B's and hotels is that we sometimes like to have a choice on the menu, and the ability to choose what time we eat. Cardamom House has a fixed menu, fixed meal times, and everyone eats as a group - fine if booking a guesthouse but not really what I expect when booking a hotel. The food was good guesthouse food.

The staff are eager to please but would certainly need a little more professional training to achieve hotel standards. The rooms are well kept, clean and comfortable but lacking usual hotel amenities such as fridge, tea/coffee making facilities, TV etc. You can pay extra for A/C (we chose not to) but this is only available for 10 hours at night which might be a problem if staying during the hot season.

There is a nice swimming pool, but I was surprised to find that it had an artificial liner instead of being tiled, this is the only place we have stayed in India where the pool was not properly tiled. Not what I was expecting, but refreshing nevertheless!

This 'hotel' is expensive for what you get. For a standard non A/C room we paid Rs 5,600 per night for 2 sharing including breakfast and taxes. Our favorite B&B and hotel of this trip were both cheaper with better service and facilities (both reviewed). To summarize, we felt that we had a good quality guesthouse stay but at hotel prices. Perhaps Tripadvisor needs to review the category of this listing so as not to disappoint others?

What a silly review for it tells the reader NOTHING about Cardamom House at all! We are and have always been a small Family Homestay" with just 7 rooms and a friendly family atmosphere - and have never claimed to be a hotel in any form at all. The reviewer spent two days with us (where all notices serve as a reminder that we are a "Family Homestay') - but still he ignored this and decided (because Trip Advisor listed us under their Hotel Category) to review us as a HOTEL not as a small Family Homestay. A totally unfair action for, as the saying goes, it is not possible to compare Chalk and Cheese. He may be unhappy with third party's classification but why should WE have to suffer a downgraded (Average) review because of his dissatisfaction with TA's listing? I was however amused by the suggestion that we should have a "Desk manned for 24 hours a day"!

A hint from an experienced traveller . The key to planning the holiday that suits your needs is effective RESEARCHING of your intended route and the accommodation to meet your needs. Trip Advisor is one such source of information containing other travellers’ opinions of accommodation. When planning, it is also very important to visit the WEBSITE of the location you are considering staying. If you had bothered you would have found that Cardamom House clearly states that we are a Family Homestay, and definitely not a Hotel. As such, we offer a different experience from that found in a hotel. As a Family Homestay we are small, can only offer a fixed menu at set mealtimes. So why compare us with a hotel saying you wanted an à la carte menu, meals when you want them ? Do your homework efficiently and you wouldn't be even staying! But I suspect you are pretty inexperienced travellers by the rest of your comments so maybe you will learn from this advice? .

We apologize that the hum of the generator upset you. Running a tourist orientated establishment and the provision of essential comforts such as fan and lights is an absolute necessity. Air conditioning is becoming important as well. For all these appliances you need Electricity. If we are to provide these in this very remote location, we have to rely on generators, when the electricity supply fails.

Apropos the air-conditioning , we are concerned about sustainability, the health of our environment and our impact on our planet During the day, guests generally spend their time outside the rooms in the open air, or visiting places, bird-watching or exploring locally. It would be irresponsible to run the generators for an empty house. We offer air-conditioning in 5 rooms and between the hours of 9pm until 7 am, to enable all to enjoy a cool and comfortable night’s rest.

You criticize the swimming pool as it utilizes a (vinyl) Liner and mention " this is the only place in India where the pool was not properly tiled". This sadly shows a profound ignorance in the advances in pool manufacture and is clear that you are neither a pool owner and with an abysmal knowledge of modern advances in technology. As aircraft design has progressed from the Wright Brothers, and cars from the T Model Ford, so too has swimming pool design. Sticking ceramic tiles on what would otherwise be a perfectly usable septic tank, adding a filter and calling it a "Swimming Pool" - is old fashioned! Modern technology now offers and array of choices and Tiling (plain or mosaic) are just one of them. We spent months evaluating all options.

Our swimming pool (designed and constructed by a world renowned and well respected French company) was also planned for a minimum long-term impact on the environment. The disturbance to the subsoil was minimal, the pre-pressed supporters of the concrete used a modern composite strong enough to ensure rigid walls but with minimal waste of cement etc. The trouble with tiled pools is that with time the grouting disintegrates and becomes discolored. This provides a breeding ground for an array of bacteria and algae to live and multiply. Heavy doses of Chlorine may kill such invaders - but also causes eye irritation in users. Hence the overwhelming smell of chlorine that emanates from so many public pools in the UK.

Our eco friendly approach can be seen in our choice of a solar system dedicated solely to pumping the pool water. This powerful solar array enables us to run the pumps for 8 hours a day - doubling the time that most pools use their pumps. Daily vacuuming and skimming removes physical debris. Water quality is checked daily and any identified alterations in water chemistry / quality - are quickly rectified by adjusting the pH (Acid/Alkaline Balance) with appropriate buffers and occasionally adding a small quantity of chlorine (solid form) to the water. This results in a perfect balanced pool water quality. One recent Trip Advisor reviewer writes about our pool:-

" There is an immaculately clean swimming pool, possibly the cleanest and best kept we have encountered in India"

It is sad that you should write in such a vein when your basic complaint is not against us - but against the classification used by an American Company having supposedly misled you. You have by your solitary and spiteful action interrupted , our fine record of excellence by downgraded us to 'average' - and totally unfairly so.

If any potential guests should read this my response, I would ask you just to ignore this 'politically motivated' review - by a couple which has clearly hopelessly failed to plan their trip adequately and is looking forward to 'getting their revenge' by writing such complete and utter nonsense.

Despite several years of travelling in India, with the same very knowledgeable driver, this was a new one on us - a combination of Cardamom House website and Google maps brought us to our destination. Our welcome was warm but we were allowed time to find our bearings, something much appreciated after hours on the road with few opportunities for a "pit-stop". Everything here runs at a gentle pace but with an efficiency that would put many a 5* hotel to shame, Chris has worked his magic and created a superb team. It is so obvious that Cardamom House was created with love and an appreciation of the surrounding beauty.
Food, always high on our list of priorities was excellent, not always traditional Indian fare, more of a fusion of many styles but never disappointing and always generous in quantity. We took the opportunity of taking a peep into every room and each has its own charm and would be very comfortable. With the monsoon many weeks off the area was hot and dusty but the superb swimming pool made this a veritable oasis and was the focus of many a lazy hour with a book. Visits to the local Shiva temple, Athoor village, weaving and the "goat" village fill the hours between breakfast and lunch - for early risers we can recommend hiking around the lake, where interesting birdlife abounds. How long should you stay - how long is a bit of string? We are returning in 2015 just to make sure that weren't dreaming this time!

Room Tip: The best room for the view is the Pondicherry Suite.

Chris and his team make Carmamom House a wonderful place to stay! Very peaceful and splendid food and unobtrusive service. The new pool makes the stay even better. Beautiful butterflies and birds! The trip to the village organised by the staff is most interesting. Well worth going out of your way to stay there.

Room Tip: We had the suite with a good view of the mountains

Cardamom House came following a 3 week journey through Tamil Nadu. It was our intention to use our five night stay to unwind and relax before returning home. This goal was exceeded.
As soon as we arrived it was clear that this was a special place. The situation looking over beautiful gardens to the lake and the hills is superb. The rooms are clean, airy and well appointed. All with a terrace overlooking the gardens and lake, just the job for relaxing, reading and a spot of bird watching. The pool area is delightful. Chris and his staff were welcoming, attentive and so keen to ensure our stay was a memorable one. Daily fresh local produce produced the most magnificent cuisine. We visited the local village and other places of interest guided by one the staff who was very knowledgeable.

We certainly hope to visit again soon.

Dr Chris and his team treated us like personal guests and we had a fabulous experience here. It was by far the best of the seven overnight stays we had during our two weeks tour of Kerala. We did not have time to explore the nearby Nature Trail but we did walk alongside the lake where we encountered a few friendly local families enjoying their Sunday picnics as well as herdsmen with their cattle and goats.

Room Tip: All appeared to be well located.

Just had our 2nd visit to this wonderful place. The owner and staff all go out of their way to make you feel like the most treasured guest/friend/relative. Rooms are a good size, comfortable beds, plenty of hot water, your personal library. The food . . . where else do you get home-made bread? apart from all the other tasty dishes, Now there is a swimming pool, kept spotlessly clean, surrounded by gorgeous flowers and butterflies. Lastly, the 'boys' make it a habit to come and chat with the guests, once again making you feel so much more than a mere guest.
