“Definitely the place to stay in Canoa”
Reviewed July 22, 2012

I traveled to Canoa with soley one other female and wouldnt have felt as safe if I wouldn't have stayed in Hotel Bambu. Its located at the edge of the town and right on the beach, giving it almost a private beach type of feel. The food and service was great, we were taken great care of. We took an over night bus from Quito and ended up arriving earlier than expected, 5:00 in the morning. We were let in by the 24 hour security and given a place to put our bags along with some cozy hammocks to sleep in since our room obviously wasn't ready for us. The rooms were fine after we got settled in. I read reviews about monster mosquitoes so i went prepared with some permethrin spray for the bed nets. I returned to Quito without a single bug bite. The rooms were also cleaned very well each day, which is hard at a beach with sand everywhere. They also have a very nice TV room that is comfortable to relax in and watch some English channels. Recommend to anyone!

Room Tip: The privates with the balconys are really nice but not necessary...

Nice, friendly! With free Wi-Fi, Direct TV available in the TV room, surf boards, pool, table tennis, books, good parking and over 25 rooms.........this is not a bad bet. You can´t be closer to the waves! At 17:00h happy hour kicks in, and they have the biggest cocktail menu on the Ecuadorian coast! The food is cooked by local cooks, and is absolutely brilliant. from the "Soup of the day" to the "encocado" with whatever seafood you want; this is a must go for any traveller! I like their different type of rooms, from $5,- for a tent, to $50,- for a bridal suite, and everything in between! Suits any budget!

Went there with the family for 2 nights we had 3 rooms in total our room number 2 was not the best it just needs some small fixups that could make all the difference in the world to leave the fan on at night you also had to leave the light on because the switch was broken, we had hot water issues all weekend, and the room could have been cleaner bad sewer smell where the cars were parked, seen empty beer bottles in the bushes.. on the plus side the staff were great very friendly, food was good happy hour great..

Great location, right on the beach, at the end of the road. We stayed in one of the freestanding "casitas?" Our second story room had great views, but also a steep set of stairs to carry our bags up. We accidently fell asleep with the front doors open at dusk and the mesquitos ate us alive. I had at least 25 bites. We learned the hard way that if the room has a built in mesquito net over the bed, it's probably for a reason Since our room did not have air conditioning, it was on the uncomfortably warm side. There was a ceiling fan, but it didn't seem to help. The room was semi-clean. I don't usually look under the bed, but I dropped my chapstick and couldn't help it. There was at least an inch of dust and what not under the bed, probably has not been cleaned in at least 6 months or more. The shower had poor water pressure and no in-shower shelf, so toiletries had to be placed on the shower floor. The bed was fairly comfortable, but the room furniture was worthless. If you tried to sit on the mini-couch, you would sink in so far, it was hard to get back out. On the plus side, the restaurant was good and the on-site dogs were very polite beggars. The restaurant staff was very good.
Inspite of it's shortcomings, I would probably stay here again if I found out Canoa's other hotels were not any better.

Room Tip: Ask to see your room before you commit. If you don't mind the heat, the lack of a/c probably wo...

I came here because someone told me that they have vegetarian options. The waitress was very rude to us, she was slamming all the condiments on the table along with our drinks and food. I could only assume it was because she does not like black people. It was me and my Spanish professor and we are both black and she just had a nasty attitude. We noticed she was nice to the other customers who are white. I will say that one of the guys was very nice and friendly. I noticed that the people who prepared the food kept starring at us from the kitchen as if they have never seen any black people before. It was odd especially since I ate at other restaurants in the area with much friendlier customer service. Also there's a vegetarian restaurant on the other side and the owner is from Argentina and her boyfriend is from Texas and they were wonderful people with delicious vegetarian food. I would not return to this place because it was weird and terrible customer service.

Room Tip: Terrible customer service if you are black.

We stayed at Hotel Bambu for five nights in May 2012 and had a wonderful time. Firstly, you have to have realistic expectations when you staying in places like Bambu and Canoa - it's not a fancy hotel and Canoa isn't a luxury resort town. In saying that, for a backpacker budget, Bambu is unique as it is beachfront with a great restaurant/bar that had lovely food and cocktails (including a 2 for 1 cocktail hour). We stayed in a double room with a private bathroom ($35 per night) and it was fantastic - very clean, good fan, a safe, balcony and had a large mosquito net. The bar and restaurant is on the beach side of the hotel so you can enjoy the sunset and the beach. The staff were really friendly, attentive and helpful. The hotel is also very well looked after by the owner - when we arrived the staff were busy re-sanding and re-painting the restaurant and hotel and this high level of maintenance and care is apparent throughout the premises. Overall, the location, price and staff made Bambu one of the most enjoyable places we stayed on our trip.

After a nightmare local night bus from Quito this place was a breath of fresh air. This place has some mayor advantages:
End of the road with direct access to the beach
Great restaurant, bit exy but excellent
Great outdoor areas to relax in hammocks
Wifi
Great happy hour
Friendly staff
Awesome hot showers
What more could you want from a place by the ocean!

Only reason why I haven't marked this place with 5 stars was the mosquito net in room 18. It did not cover the bed so we were abused by Mosquitos all night. Solution would be to hang your own mosquito net if you have one. Room can also get quite hot.

Other than that great place well run and a very friendly Dutch owner. Wish we could have stayed here longer!!!
