“Good stay. Staff excellent”
Reviewed November 26, 2013

This gets an "excellent" because of the location, food and staff despite no hot water in our room they bent over backwards to get it fixed. Receptionist, Karem, is wonderful. Nothing is too much trouble and she speaks excellent English.We were the only guests the first night but even when they were full the second night the service was extremely good. See under Room tips for details of rooms. We were asked to fill in our dinner order in advance but they were very relaxed about this. Choice of 4 starters, 4 mains and 4 puddings. We are on a Breakfast and Dinner basis. Premium wines are extra. Food was very good. Both fish and meat on the menu. Breakfast was brought to our room/terrace depending on weather. It was cold on the second day.James, who runs the dining room, is great fun and very efficient.
We had a private tour of the Matetic Winery [about 15 minutes away from hotel] -very good, interesting, extremely modern. Tasted various of their wines and thought their EQ wines the nicest. We followed this by a tour of another winery Casa Del Bosque where we had a very good lunch and tasted excellent wines.[this was suggested, organised by Matetic receptionist]. Taxi there and back.
Internet works at Casa Matetic just about. You may need to go into Reception to get a good signal. Nice to sit in the sitting room with log fire and a pre-dinner drink.Swimming pool rather too cold! Gardens are lovely to walk around.
The only "downside" was the lack of privacy in that if other guests/visitors walk around they can suddenly be on "your" terrace and looking into your room.

Room Tip: We were in Sauvignon Blanc which I would have recommended but for the fact that there was no hot wat...

My first recommendation would be to go to wine country in Chile's late summer or early fall. Our October trip found most vineyards quiet with vines just budding and nights the coldest we had our entire 2 week trip. We actually wore our down coats to dinner. That being said.....the cozy charm of this place is just wonderful. We adored not only our rooms which had some of the most beautiful lighting in a hotel room we have seen in ages (bathroom included) with high ceilings and nice amenities, but the public areas were just as inviting.

So were the staff who spoke English very well, were helpful and delightful and made the two nights very special. Our waiter for breakfast and lunch felt like a long lost member of our family. It was such fun to choose the bottle of wine for dinner each evening after a day of tasting around the valley.

The other almost was the food. Breakfast was lovely but dinner just missed the mark. It was absolutely fine. But looking back on our 13 days in Chile, it was probably the least memorable. Still......I'd come back! Just at a different time of the year. and maybe we would be able to use the terrific pool area as well!!

Room Tip: The rooms are pretty much the same. Not an issue here.

We only had one night here and would have liked at least one more. The hacienda style property is located about 1 hour from Santiago on the grounds of a large winery. We had the opportunity to do a visit this the winery and see their modern production system for their wines. This winery won an award for their Shyra Wine which we did sample along with 3 others and all were excellent. At dinner we had full course meal served by James - he was one of the best waiters I have ever had serve a dinner. His attention to detail on the dinner was superb.
The rooms were warm and comfortable and the bedding was excellent. The décor is that Estancia style so you feel you are indeed staying on a ranch. The bathroom was roomy.
For you wine lovers - stay at least 2 nights here.

Room Tip: Perfect for wine lovers.

This place is lovely but because we went out of season it was almost completely empty which made it feel slightly dejected - we were rattling around. The welcome from the front desk was very good and the room was gorgeous and the wine trip fun. The young man that drove us to the winery was very pleasant and interesting. The low point was that when we were eating in the dining room the waiter basically asked for a tip - presumably he does this to many guests but they are too polite to comment. It was not brutally done and definitely done with a smile but it was very direct - "if you have enjoyed my service you can leave something ...". We did but it left a slightly sour taste and was slightly jarring in a place which it is not particularly cheap anyway. Otherwise all the staff were very good and our stay here provided an interesting detour.

We never expected such a high quality of haute cuisine in Casablanca valley . We drank corralillo Sauvignon blanc and Shiraz wine and were engulfed by the experience . The service was impeccable and the manager Macarena was an exemplary hostess. This place is an absolute MUST

We booked two nights at La Casona as part of a bigger 19-day excursion across central Chile and Argentina. This part of the trip was sandwiched between a few days in Viña del Mar/Valparaíso and Santiago. We mostly booked apartments in order to conserve money but as part of the relaxation we decided to splash on a couple of nights here. There is certainly a sticker shock when looking, but having now stayed it was well worth it. I don't normally give out five stars, but La Casona definitely merited it.

Admittedly, we were there the early part of the week in the shoulder season, so the detailed attention could be due in part to the fact that our first night there were only a couple of other rooms occupied and we were one of two rooms the second. Though, with only seven guest rooms, I doubt that anyone gets drowned out in the crowd. In fact, it was a bit odd having the place to ourselves (the guests in the other room were barely seen or heard from).

This place is NOT for you if you don't like:

- Excellent food prepared for you when you want it;

- Copious amounts of delicious wine. Our wine pairing lunch in which we sampled four of the winery's products effectively meant we were served a bottle of wine... each. Luckily, we had no plans for the afternoon, so leaving the dining room a bit tipsy had no ill effect;

- Close contact with wildlife, including birds and foxes;

- Complete relaxation, with available activities (such as horseback rides, bike rides and hikes through the valley or even a trip to the beach about 10 km away), but no rigid timetable;

- Lovely gardens and grounds to meander through and a gorgeous pool to lounge by.

If those sound good to you, this is your place. The food is superb (though it can be a touch on the salty side), the service is personalized and warm and the setting is absolutely incredible. Two days was not enough, though I don't think the wallet would be able to handle much more.

The only downside is, as someone else mentioned, you're surrounded by all this wonderful wine, but it's sold at effectively the same price that they retail for in Canada. While a lot of wine is included in the price of your stay and many might not opt for more, they could offer a discount at La Casona for those who wish to imbibe on a mid-afternoon bottle by the pool. After all, the wine is produced 10 km away yet costs the same as if I were buying it in Ontario, with all the duties and transportation costs involved.

Just returned from a trip to Chile and would highly recommend La Casona as the service is excellent . Thank James , Jane and the outstanding chief who made out trip very worthwhile . The only negative the the wine although excellent was cheaper back in Canada that Aside we would return again without hesitation.

Room Tip: Very good so book early
