This is the kind of building that makes your jaw drop as soon as you enter. Fabulous character, excellent accomodation, very clean and tidy, great food and really friendly and helpful staff. 20 minutes from Bath (where I was working) I found staying at The George such an experience that I booked for another night just to soak up a bit more of the experience and history of the place.
The whole place reeks of character from the huge fireplaces in the bar and lounge areas to the furnishings in the bedroom and the lovely view I had from my room (Abbot). This is a building that has obviously been lovingly restored and thank goodness for that. A real gem.
Finally I'd just like to say a big thank you to the staff for the warm welcome and excellent service they provided during my two nights there, I really was made to feel at home from the minute I stepped through the door. I would highly recommend this place to anybody whether it be as a stop over or a longer break.

Over the last 4 or five years we have stayed at the George 5 times and this was alast and most disappointing visit. We have been in all of the four poster rooms and the experience is always great. Its such an amazing building, a real treasure and I always feel lucky to be staying there. On this stay we were in The Carthusian out in the courtyard and we have stayed in it before. This time as we went in we were met with a strange musty fishy smell. My partner said it could be the products they were using to clean it with but on closer inspection it wasnt that clean. The wooden panels on the bed had a good layer of dust. That may sound fussy of me to say so but when we were trying to work out what the smell was we looked all around and under the bed. All pretty mucky. The bathroom in the Carthusian has an ongoing damp problem on the untiled shower wall. Paint is peeling and flacking. Nothing was mentioned about this it seems to be the accepted state of repair. The room itself is furnished nicely and its a lovely space to enjoy.
However it was way too hot. On a cold wintery day, during a recession, it felt criminal to have the windows open but we needed to do this if we were going to have a chance of sleeping. It was crazily over heated.
We spent most of our day out and about in nearby villages. Our lunch was at the Inn at Freshford just a mile or two away and the food and the staff were exceptional. So good in fact we did the walk to their sister pub and spent most of out evening there.
It was 9pm when we got back to The George and the menu was on the verge of closing but stayed open for us so we could have something from the bar menu. That was very kind of them.
After this we went back to out room, it had cooled down but the smell of fish was more apparent. We soon realised that the courtyard is where the bar/kitchen staff socialise or smoke when not serving which made our evening in bed disrupted by banging doors as they went in and out and shut up shop. Furniture in the store room beneath was shifted about for about ten minutes which was fine but then two staff had a lengthy conversation below for about twenty minutes. I went out to find out where they were at the same time the bar maid was darting across the courtyard to join them. I told her we were being disturbed a bit by the noise and she told me abruptly that it was furniture being moved and that it had stopped now!

I was replying that the disturbance was actually a long conversation but she dashed off and was gone. Not very impressed with that level of customer service. The place seemed more like a Premiere Inn that had invaded an otherwise lovely venue.

It is things like this that made us examine our stay there closer . The more we looked the less we liked. We didnt like the smell on arrival, or the cot in the room, or the peeling bathroom paint, or the dusty bed, or the very flat cheap pillows. So we have decided to move on from having The George as our hideaway place for romantic weekends as the current regime seems not to put much care into their turn at running the place.

It has been done really well there before in our experience of two separate landlords. But for now we will give it a miss. The food was good and the breakfast was ok. A great location but premiere inn service.

Room Tip: Not the Carthusian. Too noisy, hot and unclean

Stayed at this amazing 700 year old inn for 1 night. Amazing, wow, wow, wow! Four poster bed wonderful setting and the friendliest of staff. We will be back. Ate in the restaurant where our Tastecard was accepted. Super meal although limited menu. Realised we could have ordered from a more varied bar menu but the quality of the food was 5 star. The breakfast the following morning was up there amongst the best. Locally produced sausages and bacon nicely presented. If anyone from Marston Inns reads this review you should be extremely proud of the quality of staff at this establishment.

We stayed in the Monmouth room, this was very spacious but to make a hot drink at night was very awkward as there is no light over the tea/coffee tray you had to turn the telivision round to shine light over the area so you could see what you are doing.

The soap tray in the shower was hanging off the wall and the conecting pipe to the shower head was also loose, excepting that it is an old building and the floor sloping is to be expected the bed however needs to be raised at the headboard end as your head needs to be higher than your feet when sleeping after an evening meal, these are just small things that could so easily be corrected at little cost.

Overall it was a very enjoyable stay with attentive friendly staff.

Ps.The monmouth room is haunted for those of you that wish that experience.

Only stayed for one night but very enjoyable.
Plus points: lovely situation, friendly and welcoming staff, lovely character room, tasty food.
Minus points:bedroom rather dark(more lighting at window end of room would be a bonus),food in restaurant expensive(better value in bar).Could hear the conversation from adjoining room late at night !!!!

Room Tip: Go for a room over inner courtyard
