Reviewed September 4, 2013

I spent one night here after an exhausting two weeks elsewhere in Japan. Although I arrived before check in time the owner could not have been kinder. My room was clean, peaceful, and stocked with excellent tea. The dining area had proper coffee in a warmer and a computer with excellent internet connections. Although it rained hard all night and into the next day which limited sightseeing I am thankful for the opportunity to have visited Hongu. I would highly recommend Blue Sky as a place to rest and recoup your energies.

Room Tip: Corner suites have more light.

Thank you so much for your staying at Blue Sky Guesthouse!!
If you could take a rest, it's the best pleasure for us. In the severe weather condition, I suppose you can't see every sightseeing spots. We are looking forward to visiting Hongu again.

Regrettably, we can't ready yet 3hours earlier of check-in time...
Though sometimes there are some suggestions and complaints from our guests about early check-in, as we have replied for the comments from the other reviewer, we need the time for cleaning guestrooms for offering comfortable environment, and going out for purchase foods for breakfast. We are sorry all we can do is keeping their luggage before check-in time, as we did in the morning for you. We appreciate for your understanding..
Anyway, I'm very sorry if I was looked like unkind... That's why I was in a hurry for showing you a room as early as possible.I'm sorry again.

We hope you enjoy your life in Japan.Thank you!

We stayed here for three nights and loved every minute of it. Since we came to hike portions of the Kumano Kodo without having to hike the whole route from Tanabe, this was a perfect mid-point to settle. The village is small, but the guesthouse is beautiful and makes up for what the town lacks by simpy being a peaceful place to bunk down and relax.

Made of sweet-smelling wood, the Blue Sky Guesthouse is well maintained and in a perfect location to enjoy both nature and the small village of Hongu. A small manmade creek runs along the property, lending a peaceful sound to those of surrounding nature, and the house is nestled into the hillside of bamboo and evergreens.

The owner, Naoya-san, is solicitous, helpful, and friendly. Not once did he overstep the boundary between allowing privacy and offering help/advice. In some ryokan where we have stayed, I have felt like I was in someone else's home and space and therefore felt cramped. Not so at this place. It has the feel of the independence of a hotel with the small size of a ryokan. It helps that the individual bathrooms attached to each room are private and modern and allow one to relax instead of worrying about infringing on someone else's bathroom time.

Naoya-san is very knowledgeable about surrounding areas and the bus schedule, and was helpful in recommending routes for us.

Although he doesn't serve dinner, he was open to people using the kitchen (he provides necessary utensils for a simple meal) and recommended places to buy food. When we return (because we definitely will!), we will most likely shop for groceries to take with us for our stay there. The breakfasts we had here were delicious! We had two Western-style breakfasts (a combo of eggs, bacon, toast, soup, fruit, yogurt, fried potatoes) and one typical Japanese breakfast. They were all filling and tasty.

TV was available in Japanese and with BBC and CNN channels, and wifi was free and fast.

Oh, and the washer is free to use (the dryer costs $300 yen for 90 minutes) so be sure to take along some soap to do your laundry because you will want to stay for longer than one night.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Blue Sky Guesthouse. The guesthouse is very comfortable with large rooms, en-suite bathrooms, and both kitchen and self-serve laundry facilities available for use. The owner and his wife were very attentive to our needs. He cooked wonderful breakfasts for us each morning, according to our dietary preferences. He also gave us maps and helped us plan our time in the Hongu area. When we were leaving, he advised us on the best route to take to our next destination, marking that route on a map as well as programming the route into the GPS on our rental car. Our stay at Blue Sky Guesthouse could not have been better. I highly recommend this guesthouse.

Room Tip: I think that all rooms here are desirable.

Thank you so much for having stayed with us!!
And we are very proud of your warm comment. Especially, my wife is pleased to hear you have done good stay at ours.
I'm glad to hear you had arrived to next destination safely. I think the driving with GPS on Japanese language is very hard for the drivers from overseas... If I could help you, that's fine.
We are looking forward to seeing you again. Thank you!!

We stayed two nights in this guest house, which is more a hotel than a guest house because every room is provided with a bathroom with toilet as well as with a small balcony! You can thus take advantage of the quiet landscape of Hongu. The hotel is close to the "center" of the city of Hongu with its temples and its restaurants. The owner is charming and helpful and he speaks English. You can cook yourself or the owner prepares you some Japanese dishes. All this for a price more than reasonable. Special mention for the bedding which is new!

I stayed in Blue Sky Guesthouse with my wife for one night.
Actually this guesthouse quality is much better than my image of guesthouse.

The owner, Yamamoto-san is so sincere reliable person. His hospitality made us really relax. He well know about this area, you can get any information you need in your travel in this area.

The room was typical japanese style tatami room, very clean and tidy. But also there is western style toilet and bathroom in each room. Any person can relax and enjoy japanese style inn.

The location is very center of this area. One minute from bus stop.

I definitely recommend you to stay here.
And we definitely visit this guesthouse again.

The guesthouse is hidden at a beautiful valley, which is not easy to find. It is surrounded by forest - so quiet that you can only hear the sound of stream passing by.

The owner is helpful and very friendly. He gave us the clear and detailed decriptions on the onsens nearby, despite the fact that we speak no Japanese, and gave us great recommendation on the route we should visit.

The facilities of the guesthouse is top notched - washing machine, big kitchen and spacious reading corner with wealthy collections of traveling information.

It is 10 out of 10!

We just came back from our trip to Japan, and wish to share an exceptional experience we had while staying for 5 days at Naoya's guest house. On top of the excellent room, facilities, breakfast at it's best ,we enjoyed a lot the jenerosity of the owner Naoya, who did the outmost to provide us with tips, information etc,.That has a special value when visiting the area of Kumano Kodo, where information of any kind in English is rare, yet the people around try to help as much as they can.We would recommend any traveller who wish to enjoy a warm heart and jeneros Japaneese hospitality to stay at this guesthouse. For us it deffently was one of the highlight of our trip.
