“A great first stop on the Kumano Kodo”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 21, 2013

This is a lovely place to stay. Small enough to be personal and yet big enough to meet some other walkers. The rooms have magnificent views across the valley, the bath was large and very well laid out, the food was special (fresh and delicious). It all made for a great stay.

This is the best stay we had in Japan: authentic, friendly, delicious, beautifully decorated, and very comfortable.

The rooms are super romantic with amazing view. It is furnished with a western bed, and all the comfort.
The small village is the gateway to the Kumano Kodo trek which is more than a walk: a pilgrimage! The temple in the village itself is a gem. It is at an hour bus or a few km walk from many interesting places to visit.
The atmosphere in the lodge is relaxed and very friendly, The staff is helpful.
Diner and breakfast are gourmet and from the best ingredients combining traditional cooking with a twist of european inspiration.
The little shop at the entrance provides good quality local artisanat.
Incredible photos of the mist on the mountains can be made at sunrise.

We got a bus from Tanabe station and were picked up by the friendly manager of the Lodge. We had a lovely night here to begin our walk. We had travelled down from Tokyo by train so it made sense to have a night here and walk out the next day. This government lodge is after all the entry to the World Heritage Walk. The building, food, service and sleep quality was great. A most wonderful meal at both dinner and breakfast.Jian the manager had spent time in Spain and treated us to a classical guitar performance. Other village staff were friendly. It has a warm, happy atmosphere, great views and clear mountain air. Like other reviewers we wish we had stayed longer and hope to return.

We stayed here on the first of our five nights on the kumano kodo trail and were thoroughly impressed. The lodge has the ambiance of a mountain hideaway, a modern cabin-y feel and very friendly service. The manager spoke excellent English and was a great host, going between the tables at dinner and socialising and introducing the dishes.

The food was wonderful, the iberico pork hot pot a cool touch to a traditional Japanese dinner. The vegetables, we were told, were picked from the surrounding hills and delicious.

The room was nicely laid out, with a spectacular view over the mountains and valleys - just bear in mind that unusually here you need to lay out your own bedding on the tatami.

All in all a great place and anyone doing the kumano kodo should definitely make this part of their itinerary.

It was awesome to arrive here after walking from Takijiri with steep and quite demanding walk.We regretted that we booked only one night stay instead of two! Love the scenery with spectacular mountains view, and love the food there so much, all the food served were freshly picked locally thus they named " Organic Hotel".
The operator there Mr Jion also add to the attraction. He speaks fluent English,Spanish,Mandarin and of course Japanese. In which he could talk about so much on this area, the local food and he even played guitar for us after dinner to entertain us!

Room Tip: Stay longer then 1 night to explore more of this area.

The hotel is beautifully designed with traditional cedar wood and the rooms have a stunning view across the mountains. At dinner we had a kaseiki which is the best we've had in Japan - really well presented and very tasty. The staff were so helpful and made us a breakfast box and lunch box for the 40km trek to Hongu (which is a must!). Definitely worth tying this place into your trip.

We stayed on our way to Hongu for one night in the Kiri no Sato Takahara Lodge. It was a wonderful stay. The room was spaceous and clean with a woderful veranda to enjoy the view and the sunset.

The bathrooms were amazing and we enjoyed the bath very much. It was wonderful to soak in the water after a short but hot walk to Takahara an later sit outside and enjoy the view

The staff in the lodge was helpful and very friendly. The food was great. a lot of different mountain food from the surrounding was offered. We were very happy and can only recommand a stay in the Kiri no Sato Takahara Lodge for anyone walking the pilgrim trail if he starts his walking in Osaka and spend no night in the Kii Tanabee
