We walked the Kumano Kodo loop from and back to Yunomine. It took a full day for people of moderate fitness. We greatly enjoyed the walk and it was a wonderful contrast to the busy cities of Japan. There is quite a lot of logging in the area, so the scenery wasn't quite as spectacular as I had hoped for but I was still very glad that we went. The path is well sign-posted and if you run out of food or drink, never fear - there are vending machines along the way!!

We spent two days walking and 4 days in the area. Dont be afraid of using local buses to help you cover sections of the walk. Worth all the aches and sore muscles. Visit one of the onsens like Kayawa to relax and relieve the aches.

We were blessed to have chosen this walk. Its well marked every 500 meter with clear sign but still keeping the stone paved ancient walk instead of sealed tar road.
We feel refreshed and renewed from this 4 days Nakaheichi walk which starts from Takijiri to Hongu Taisha.

A great walk from Takijiri through the mountains und hills of the Kii Peninsula to the great shrine of Hongu Taisha.
After leaving the bus we follow the old pilgrim path through the mountains, dense forests and hill. You can see a different Japan as the one we know from Tokyo or Osaka. People speak only little English but with a smile an a japanese phrasebook you have the chance to discover the rural Japan. For us it was a great experience with we wont miss any more.
We walked for tow days an enjoyed one day in Yunomie Onsen and visited the great shrine of Hongu Taisha.

We started from Takijiri (a 50 min bus ride from Kii-Tanabe), overnighted at Tsugizakura and finished 40 km away at Hongu. A little steep at times but it was very satisfying. Great if you like hiking through beautiful forests. Very well signed, and the Kumano travel association website even has a downloadable audio guide that tells you more about what you're seeing along the way. The minshuku we stayed at in Tsugizakura was charming and had delicious food - would highly recommend that as well!
