“Ancient history inside a modern building complex”
Reviewed June 12, 2013

I would have never expected such a modern building in this old historical city. The park and the building complex are new built and the architecture is really amazing. But still it is fitting in the wide landscape with the mountains in the background.
Inside the museum everything is modern as well. There are short English descriptions to every exhibition piece and you can also get an English audio guide.
I learnt so much about the history of Shimane and Izumo, and especially about the old myths and stories. Most of the Japanese gods came from Izumo, so here you can learn why and what kind of things happened. They even have a small cinema inside the museum, where you can watch movies about the history of Izumo.
The staff is really friendly and helpful and tries to explain everything to you or even provided a free tour through the museum.

“Interesting museum of local history”
Reviewed March 30, 2013

The museum has a lot of interesting artifacts and relics of the local area, most impressively the huge collection of bronze swords that were discovered in the area and fill an entire room and line the walls. There's interesting information on the Izumotaisha Shrine's history, development and the local area, all housed in an impressive modern building. Definitely worth a visit, especially if you're interested in the history of the shrine.

“A taste of Tradition”
Reviewed March 26, 2013

Neighbor to the famous Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine, the Shimane Musem of Ancient Izumo is proof of the long rich history of Izumo and the Shimane Prefecture. Though the museum is built with slick glass, metal beams and concrete walls, all features of modern architecture, inside is anything but. The exhibits display artifacts from the Edo period and even before. To my surprise, the Shimane history long predates that of Kyoto. Here, visitors have the opportunity to see how people lived, what they farmed, and ate. One of the most impressive exhibits is the museum's collection of swords and weapons. Take in the tradition and history and be enriched by the extensive history of Izumo and Shimane.

“The ancient Japan”
Reviewed March 16, 2013

I was astonished to see how old the Izumo culture is and to find out how the subject of mythology in Izumo comes alive. When you enter the Museum area with its wide surroundings, you won't never imagine that this is an archeological museum. My first thought was that this looks like a museum for modern or contemporary art, because of the modern architecture of the main buildings as well as the connection between those buildings and the nature.
The Museum has interesting exhibits, however sometimes without english explanations, so don't forget to take the english audio guide in order to understand the truly meaning of each object. The mystical atmosphere attached to the exhibits reached me and i was amazed the most by the model reconstructions of the ancient Izumo-taisha shrine, which were based on large pillars found near the area.

“A look into Izumo's rich history”
Reviewed March 11, 2013

Walking distance from Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine (Izumo Taisha), is the Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo. This museum is not only aesthetically pleasing in it’s layout and décor but it is also a great way to learn about Izumo’s fascinating history. The museum has many miniature replicas of important buildings, 20 minute movies that explain how Izumo’s history is “where mythology comes alive”, and some hands on opportunities to see how the people of ancient Izumo built such magnificent shrines. It is a nice aid to truly understand and appreciate the sights that you will experience in Izumo.
