Hotel Boston Plaza Kusatsu

I've stayed here a couple of times. Not all the rooms are spacious so be warned. They have made a great attempt to improve the hotel with better aircon, breakfast and shower. They now offer free mini bar, only water green tea and potato chips but it's really a nice gesture. The Japanese restaurant under the hotel accessed from outside is a really great find, reasonable prices and great food. Breakfast time can be a little chaotic but not all the time. In general a good place to stay although a little quirky.

The last thing I expected from a hotel in the middle of Japan (Kusatsu is a small place near Kyoto) is a dedication to USA in general and JFK in particular. But apart of pictures, background music and other decorations, the hotel itself is very nice. It consists of two buildings, I stayed in the South building and I was told it is better than the North one. The room is very comfortable, you can find free drink in the minibar and free Wi-Fi (turn on TV to see your password). The zero distance from the train station is a great plus, but take into account the noise in the morning if you count on a late sleep.

Just outside Kusatsu station on the commuter run from Kyoto city, the Boston is one of those strange Japanese concept hotels - this time the theme is bizarrely the former US President John F Kennedy so the public areas & function rooms are based on this theme. Where else will you get to sit on a bench next to a life size model of JFK? Or areas resembling the oval office?
The hotel is rather new & spotless. It seems to cater to weddings more than anything - and it did seem that dealing with this aspect of their business overshadowed any care or service for regular guests. I found the staff at the front desk surly & uninterested in helping guests - even unusually rude & that was in Japanese. They showed absolutely no interest in greeting (not a word) or helping any regular guests arriving with luggage or making their way around the hotel with its 2 confusing wings. In fact staff rushed into an elevator in front of us & made us wait for another one (weddings are their priority.)
Also their front desk sign displays in English that you can use JAL Mileage cards but then staff said we couldn't, they were quite rude about it.
However, the rooms were nice & they had interesting glassed in bathrooms (you could draw a curtain across) & had an inbuilt sound system so in theory you could watch TV from the bath (but only if you kept the water cold as the windows just steamed up otherwise.) But I do really think only the scatalogical could enjoy the idea of a glassed in toilet & I've only seen this at a love hotel before.
Breakfast was buffet style with international food options, it was fine.
Unlike a previous reviewer, I wouldn't say enjoying hot water & complimentary tea & coffee is a bonus - I would expect this at any hotel!
Look, if you have to stay in Kusatsu for any reason then it's fine. It's not all that far from Kyoto JR but the commuter train does get really crowded at peak hour.

Stayed at the Boston Plaza for 2 nights and definitely enjoyed my stay. Central location, a stone-cast away from Kusatsu station with good connections to Kyoto. You will find supermarkets, a department store (with a good food section in the basement), and all sorts of restaurants on the other side of the train station in short walking distance.

Very polite, friendly and helpful staff. Speedy check-in and check-out. The hotel features a loyalty program for those who have use for this. Loved the breakfast with lots of tasty Japanese treats and appreciated that the buffet even had local specialities from the Shiga region. Noticed a kiropractor/massage place in the South Wing (open until midnight) but did not get a chance to try.

My room felt a bit small, not too much space to keep your gear organized. However, for a hotel located in a rather densely populated area, it was perfectly quiet and sleep quality was top. Bathroom was also small but clean. Amenities are refilled every day. Only cable-LAN in the room but Wifi is available in the lobby.

Good value, good service, definitely recommended.

Room Tip: South Wing rooms are newer

I sometimes use this hotel for my business trip. It locates in front of Kusatsu station, approximately 20 minutes by JR train from Kyoto station. Looks like an old American hotel, and rooms are so nice! The price is also reasonable. There is a convenience store on the ground floor in this hotel. If you cannot book your room in Kyoto, especially in the high season, I would think this hotel is a choice as an alternative in the satellite area for Kyoto. Please check it out!
