“Must do for nature lovers”
Review of Mt. Katsuudake

Mt. Katsuudake
Reviewed April 14, 2013

If you love the outdoors you're going to want to head to Mt Katsuudake. The trail is not a "path" like you might find in other park type areas. There are a lot of rocks which will need to be navigated and it's best to have proper footwear. As with other hikes save this one for the winter months and ensure that you properly prepare to return before dark because it does get dangerous.

This visit was made along with a friend who enjoys climbing. Loaded with camera gear and a backpack, I elected to stay behind and do some wildlife photography. Little did I realize, that climbing a peak opposite to Mt. Katsu, I would eventually be at a higher elevation than my friend.
As it turned out, I took some photos of the mountain and the little speck of a red shirted climber, on Mt. Katsuudake, who was calling me on the cellular telling me to look up and snap his photo. The climb, on either mountain, is not for the timid at heart and is a great way to enjoy exercise, as well as, nature.

I climbed this mountain with three of my friends last weekend. Beware that this isn't the easiest trek on the island but when you reach the top the view is more than worth it. The "trail" is quite rocky and you will have to literally crawl over some spots. There are a few caves on this mountain also but I do not recommend entering them unless you are experienced and have the correct equipment for such exploration.

To get there: Follow 58 North past Nago, turn right on 72 and follow the signs for Mt. Katsuu. You will go up a very narrow road just keep going right. When you come to a parking lot park and follow the trail to the top. There are Japanese style toilets at the parking lot and you should use them prior to you ascent. Bring enough water and a light snack. You will need the water, trust me.
