I checked in so- late because of my mistake. Also, taxi-reservation for arrival at Buaiso was cancelled. Although these problems drove hotel staffs hard(I really want to APOLOGISE to them.. q_q), general manager and staffs were SO- KIND and NICE. After receiving guidance, we went to special-dinning room. Most of 'special' meaning in lodging service is 'common' when you check in, and feel. But, dinner that Bouiso offered for us was LITERALLY SPECIAL. So I was very sad because of forgetting my wallet for tips. If I re-reserve this place, I am wiiling to pay tips double. Another good thing was Open air-bath. There's no need to express. You can probably check pictures for them in reservation-site. SEE AND CHOOSE.

I went to this place with my parents. we were very dizzy because of small amount of fukuoka-yufuin transfer. But, we were IMPRESSED by this service, and could sleep nice for comfort-room.

If you can give up more time nearby yufuin station, and accpet taxi-charge from Bouiso to Yufuin station, I really recommend BOUISO for you.

Room tip: NICE VIEW and WONDERFUL VIEW of open-air bath. MANY rent-able bath rooms. But when you go late, might feel some fear because of darkness.

Stayed as a couple for two nights in early December.

We drove to Buaiso directly from Fukuoka Airport. It took about 70 minutes by car in the late afternoon. The hotel offers complimentary parking. The complex is basically a combination of a hotel (Buaiso), and a restaurant (Tankuma). There's also a spa attached to the public springs.

We stayed in the Kashi room, which is a part of the "Hanare" series of smaller free standing villas situated on a slightly elevated portion of the hotel. These rooms featured western beds, heated tatami, and an outdoor verandah hot spring pool overlooking the rest of the hotel and some mountains I think futons can be brought out if you have more than two persons in your party. Room amenities include a Nespresso, humidifier, complimentary minibar, wifi, and more. You can control the private spring from an electronic control panel inside the room (particularly useful when its freezing).

The couple things I would highlight about Buaiso (good or bad depending on your tastes):
1) The service is extremely passive--they'll pretty much never check on you other than to set mealtimes if at the hotel.
2) The ryokan meals take place in the restaurant (Tankuma) and not the in rooms
3) The hot springs--most hotel documents seem to indicate it is a natural hot spring so I won't challenge this, however, it is crystal clear water without any odor or evident minerality. Coupled with the modern setup in some ways it is more reminiscient of a jacuzzi or giant bath tub. The in room private springs also need to be refilled every day manually.
4) The location of Buaiso is not in Yufuin and actually fairly far out of town. I would describe the location as really between Yufuin City (~20 mins by car) and Beppu City (~25 mins by car).
5) English--some of the staff have very good English, the rest don't really speak at all. The first day we had a young lady with great English, but second day she was off and had to whip out my elementary Japanese
6) The public baths -- maybe it was a low season but the ladies half of the public baths were never open when we were there. I used the public baths but was always the only one. Three baths but otherwise pretty typical.

The real highlight of Buaiso is the location. If you are looking for a beautiful mountain backdrop for your hot spring experience, Buaiso has got it. It is on a mountain slope and you have a postcard backdrop of Oita's mountains while you bathe--great scenery to relax in and take photos. The hotel is quite isolated, a reasonable distance from any major tourist town, allowing you to rest and relax

We stayed for two nights. Buaiso is a bit unique for a ryokan in that you may opt to include meals or exclude (extra cost). Between the two nights, the course structure of the menu remained the same, basically revolving around the grill featured on all the restaurant tables, but the exact ingredients changed. One night was good, featuring local beef and chicken, while the second night was less impressive with a seafood themed menu.

Overall, if you're looking for a scenic and rural locale in the Oita area, Buaiso isn't a bad choice. My only personal qualm would be there are other onsen ryokan that offer better service and facilities for this price point--not to mention a far more unique experience--but some may prefer the simplicity.

Room tip: Hanare Rooms are the smaller villas (designed for 2, fits 4 max I guess) on the highest elevated part of the hotel and nearest the restaurant/entrance/carpark The Bettei Rooms are larger villas on a lower elevation (4+) The suites are in the main Buaiso building and not free standing (vary in size). They are the furthest away from the restaurant/carpark/Entrance. They still feature similar amenities and balconies.

Love the modern and elegant style of this ryokan.
Our room is a single-storied semi-detached cottage with a private onsen bath in the balcony. We have stunning scenery overlooking Yufuin. At night, we can see many stars in the clear sky.
We love the design and layout of the room, which is impeccably clean and well-equipped with all kinds of amenities (including a Nespresso coffee machine, and a set of L'occitane products for each guest). Drinks in the fridge (coke, beer, juice) are all free for consumption.
The restaurant serves amazing food. Our kaiseki dinner and breakfast was very delicious. Because of this, even the rate per person (30,000+ yen) was not cheap, we think it really was very good vale for money.
Location wise, the ryokan is high up in the mountain and is approx 10-15 mins ride from yufuin station. The hotel arranged a cab to pick us up from the station for 2000 yen only (cheaper than us getting the cab ourselves). The ryokan also offers helicopter service to various locations. From Fukuoka, the journey costs a around 90000 yen for a 30-min ride.
I would definitely go back again.

Stayed here for one night at 206 with a private hot springs bath tub outside the terrace area. The room was more than large enough for two people to sleep in and play around. Given the size the of the room, the TV was a bit too small.

The dinner was great, but it felt more like a Yakiniku restaurant rather than a traditional Japanese style kaiseki place. However, the meat that was served was really tasty.

One thing that concerned me during our stay was the way they had made a reservation for our massage and the way they handled to follow up and remember us by.

I have clearly mentioned that the massage reservation was for two. Initially, the person who helped me make a reservation told me that the massage will be done in a series starting from my GF and then I.

After we finished our dinner and we were about to head back to the room from the restaurant, one of the staff told us that both of us can go at the same time - this sounded to me we can start our massage simultaneously. So we thought we'd go at the same time, only to find out that the masseuse can only do massage one person at a time. So I ended going back to the room waiting for 40 minutes until my GF's massage was finished.

Next morning, after we finished our breakfast, the same female staff came up to us and mentioned that we arrived here by taxi, which was not true. They have been informed that we arrived with a rental car. Perhaps they've mixed up with another couple on the same day, but two mistakes in a row didn't make us feel all that welcome. We might visit the place again to check and see if the service has improved. Otherwise, we would look for another place in the main Yufuin area next time.
