“Loved the outdoor onsen!”
Reviewed May 25, 2013

We got a helpful run down of the place from an English-speaking member of the staff upon arrival. Rooms were large, clean and traditional looking.
It is a relaxing resort ideal for those who would like to get away from crowds and the rest of the world.

One small hiccup: Wi-fi was not easily available. Pros/cons depending on your perspective. When we tried to ask the counter staff about wifi access, one particular manager was curt and unhelpful. The language barrier made communication even more difficult. Other than this one rude guy, the rest of the staff were extremely courteous and pleasant.

For shopping there's a convenience store 5-10 min walk away & some souvenir shops around the resort. No big malls in the vicinity, but you won't feel compelled to shop anyway. Yufuin is picturesque and worth taking a stroll around.

The main draw and the reason I'd come back here is the onsen.
There are indoor/outdoor onsen on levels 1 & 2. Males & females rotate levels at each half of the day. The onsen at level 1 was especially lovely with a breathtaking view of the outdoors. There aren't many people around late morning and late night so it's great if it's your first time and you feel self-conscious. Shower facilities were large, clean and well stocked with all manner of toiletries including moisturizers/makeup removers.

Room Tip: 3 people can share the room comfortably as they are huge

Yufuin Sansuikan is a resort hotel located in Yufuin, Oita, about ten minutes walk from Yufuin Station. The hotel has 85 standard and Japanese style rooms of various sizes.

We checked into the hotel late afternoon. Check-in went smoothly without problems. An English-speaking staff at reception gave us a rundown of the various facilities in the hotel.

The bedroom was big enough for two persons and two suitcases. In the room, there were two beds, a small table, two chairs, a reclining leather armchair, a TV, a kettle and two cups, two pairs of Japanese slippers and two sets of Japanese robes (yukata).

The toilet and shower were in separate compartments, with the wash basin outside these two compartments. This arrangement of a separate toilet, shower, and wash basin is quite practical especially when one person wants to use the toilet while the other is showering. The toilet compartment was very small and I had to squeeze to get in to use it.

After unpacking, I changed into my yukata and went to the hotel’s onsen on the ground floor. There were two indoor pools, one was very hot and the other was just right. I did not try the outdoor onsen as the weather was freezing cold.

After 20 minutes in the onsen, I went back to my room, changed and went to dinner.

I had a fantastic traditional Japanese dinner in a private room. Every item including dessert was delicious and the portions were more than ample.

The next morning, I had a Japanese breakfast. Many of the breakfast items were standard fare – potato chips, croissants, bread, ham and sausages. The porridge went very well with the condiments that came in a box provided by one of the staff.

Service was good. Although few staff speak English, I had no problems getting what I wanted, especially during dinner and breakfast.

I will definitely stay here again the next time I visit Yufuin.

Ryokan is a short walk from the JR station although the hotel does provide a free shuttle service. On check-in u will be provided with a free pass to visit other onsens. As most of the gratis onsens on the list close their doors to visitors by around 1600hrs, we could only visit the one up the road, a 15mins walk away. Although the onsen was very small the water was very "smooth". Back in Sansuikan, the onsens were large but the water was not as good. U could take an interesting walk by the bank of the river next to the roykan, going upstream, to get to the shops n cafes some 30mins away.

The hotel is about 10 min away from the train station and generally convenient to the main sights. The staff was very prompt and helpful-even assisted my friend in cutting her suitcase lock when she accidentally jammed the lock. There is a shuttle bus from the hotel to the train station, in the morning. The hotel room was nondescript, the hot springs facilities were alright, but it was a little overcrowded in the women's section, maybe because the hotel was full. The highlight must be the breakfast/dinner (included in the price), very amazing and sumptuous. We had abalone for dinner, many courses and even sashimi for breakfast. Super value for money and will definitely be back!

Nice ryokan that less than 10 minute walk from the train station. It's beside a beer brewery and a small bread shop. People in the town are very friendly was was more than happy to give us directions when we got lost.

The massage in the ryokan was also reasonably priced and good! It was nice to have a massage after taking in the breathtaking scenary in the onsen. We went during an off-peak period, so there were a couple of times where there was only me and my friend in the onsen.

Hotel was reasonably priced too - highly recommended!
