The greatest eel I've ever had. I didn't even take the time to take a picture. I've always liked grilled eel after I've had it for the first time a couple of years ago, but this one is definitely the best I've ever had. It's not cheap, but well worth the price!

Based on the map obtained from the Tourist Information Centre, we found our way to this restaurant. The menu is only available in Japanese but it was not a problem. The lady in attendance was very courteous, patient as she explained and took our orders with smiles. The unagi was served in a "jubako", a lacquered bento box with rice and a bowl of soup. The meat was soft and tender ~ It never taste so good with the slightly sweet sauce and practically melted in our mouths. It is by far the the best unagi meal that we have had! Not only did we had a fabulous meal, we also had a wonderful time getting to know and chat with the other Japanese diners including the cashier. Despite the language barrier, we had some fun and laughter together. A great evening!

We took the JR train from Kumamoto to Kagoshima and deliriously stopped by Hitoyoshi for one good reason, having one fine meal at 100-year-old unagi restaurant. Thanks google map for leading us the way to the restaurant (about 10 minutes walk from the station). To our surprises, there were no queues at all when we got there. The old lady led us to private room and gave us the Japanese-only menu. Google translate didn't help much as the characters were hand-written. Fortunately we managed to get what we wanted. The box set for 4 pieces of unagi (charcoal grilled eel) costs for 2,600 yen and 3,800 yen for 6 pieces. This came with soup and pickle. Literally speaking, I think it's one of the best meals I ever had in Japan. The eel was perfectly cooked with fine aroma, the special sauce made it taste even better. Worth visiting. Completed satisfied.

We went to this restaurant based on the fact it is number one on trip advisor.

They do not speak much (any) English but we managed to decipher from the waitress what they were famous for (the eel). We had around 4 pieces each and it also came with pickles and miso soup.

Eel was beautifully cooked, really melt-in the-mouth. Flavour was gorgeous and I really enjoyed it.

Meal was pretty expensive by Japanese standards I think - total came to 6800 YEN for eels for two and two beers which I thought was a lot.

Anyway I would come back here again so would recommend it as the service was good and the food was excellent.

This is probably the most delicious charcoal grilled unangi we have ever had. We reached the shop at 2:30pm which is just nice before the afternoon closing. No queue at this hours & we are able to get our meals fast. Unangi is so thick & fatty that nearly can melt in your mouth. Feel blessed after having the utmost delicious grilled unangi meals. Strongly recommend to tourist travelling to Hitoyoshi city of Kumamoto, Japan.
