Richmond Hotel Yamagata-ekimae
Ranked #1 of 83 Hotels / Ryokan in Yamagata
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 4, 2014

The Richmond Hotel is on the opposite side to the main entrance of Yamagata Station. It is a 5 minute walk and can be easily seen from the station. Service and quality is excellent.
Hotel has free wifi. There is also a coin laundry.
A large supermarket is also convenient to the hotel and just a few minutes walk from the hotel. To find the supermarket, think as if you are standing in the hotel. Walk out of hotel, turn left and walk to the main road running away from the station. Turn hard left again and the supermarket is about 150 metres down the road, left (again) at the next corner. You may be tempted to reach the supermarket by using the carpark behind the hotel. Please don't as it is actually longer. (yes we tried that once).
There are restaurants and cafes in and around the main entrance to Yamagata Station.

very convenient from Yamagata station. convenience store and supermarket 24hrs open is very closed. No bars and restaurants in and around the hotel so that you have to go to the opposite side from the station. but just a few minutes walk.

I find Richmond Hotels to be among the best value, reliably pleasant chains to stay in Japan. This hotel is conveniently located about 5 minutes from the West Exit of Yamagata Station. A 7-11 is nearby with excellent choices and an ATM for Intl cards.

Recommendations in the area include just outside the East Exit for Mister Donut (Cheap and good breakfast with free coffee refills) and in the same building the uniquely named Louisiana Hurricane British Food & Beatles Music bar. The decor is all Beatles memorabilia and live music plays during the week.

Nearby visits include Yamadera and Mt Zao for some excellent countryside views, rustic temples, and short hikes.

I went to Yamagata last april. When I arrived at the station I realized it was chilling. Fortunately enough, the hotel is only a block away from the west exit. I had arrive there way too early so the check in had to wait. Both, the check in and check out procedures can be done with a machine. The staff will gladly help you. They knew a little bit of English, enough to get things done.
The room was perfectly clean and big enough for one. Ihad booked for two, but as I ended up going alone, they cut the price. Inside the room you had free wi-fi.
Breakfast is served in the second floor and while it has some variety, it's mostly directed to a japanese type of breakfast.
The location is perfect. As I mentioned before, it's only one block away from the station, and if you take the east exit of the station, you'll have plenty of stores and restaurants at your hand.
All in all, if you're going to yamagata, be it to explore the city, go to Yamadera, or just to sleep somewhere before heading to hokkaido, this is your got hotel.

kind service, speaking a little english, but right the necessary, price more then reasonable, very quick check-in and -out.
Yamagat is a nice place to stay if you like snowing, it always snowed in a week. The only problem was with the heating, too strong and dry and difficult to understand how to regulate it, but not too bad.

This hotel is new, clean, conveniently located and very reasonably priced. The room is not large but it has all of the necessary modern amenities. The Japanese breakfast was also very good with a lot of local Yamagata foods. I definitely recommend this hotel if you're planning to visit Yamagata.
