Rating a hotel is about expectations – fulfilled or otherwise. This hotel touts itself as “The Leading Hotel in Tohoku”. Well, it’s not because we’ve stayed in many others that lead it by a considerable margin. To be sure, it does occupy one of the most spectacular settings in Tohoku and it is not a bad place to stay but there are too many shortcomings to meet the promise that it holds out or the tariff that it charges.

The good: after the parking debacle (see below) the front desk was polite and efficient with passable English. This is a non-smoking hotel so if you’re a smoker look elsewhere. Our ocean view Japanese style 10 tatami room with bath & toilet (#506) was clean, quiet and adequately appointed. Perhaps an average 3 stars overall.
The glazed sitting annex fronted a stunning panorama over Miyako Bay and the jagged Jodogahama rocks. Everything expected was there and it all worked as expected.
The bathroom ensemble mostly did what was asked of it and parking is gratis in either the hotel’s car park or, if full, the Jodogahama Beach second carpark about 100 metres further away.
The included wifi worked well and fast on all of our devices. Our plan included a buffet breakfast & dinner both of which were fair quality and well-serviced examples of mostly Japanese staples taken in the hotel’s main dining room which takes in the aforementioned view – if you don’t get it from your room.

The not so good: first impressions count and ours was not too good. Having stopped under the hotel’s porte cochère to unload our luggage we were promptly shooed away by the one of the staff with an abrupt “no parking allowed here”. It took a little time and spleen to convince him that we were not parking but unloading and that our car would be moved as soon as we were done.
We opted for one of the Japanese style rooms because they are the only option with the knockout view. They offer western style rooms where you don’t need to sit and sleep on the floor, but their outlook is limited to trees - and you can see those anywhere.
Our room was supposed to be 41 square metres which it may have been but much of the space was wasted on a cavernous and useless entry that was principally devoted to racks for shoes and a closet for the bedding. The décor and finishes were traditional Japanese minimalism that may have been OK once but is somewhat past its prime now. Power outlets around the room are at a premium and poorly situated.

The bad: the compartmented bathroom suite looked to have been lifted wholesale from a 1970s cruise ship. The plumbing would not have been misplaced in Noah’s ark and the toilet closet was just that, a closet. To be sure, it was in a fair state of repair and it all worked OK, but the outcome was 2 stars at best and not at all in keeping with what the property holds itself to be. Of course you could always go for the no-bathroom option and use the shared toilets and public onsen which would save some money and obviate the principal grievance we have to offer.

Room tip: The ocean view is the only reason to stay here

Thank you for your stay in our The Park Hotel Jodogahama. We really appreciate that you took your time to reflect on our hotel facilities, from various angles. It left us an impression that you, Tedstravelblogs, were really trying to experience Japan as it was. We would also like to thank you for the comment you made about Jodogahama’s scenery, our room facilities and its sizes, meals and so on.
We would like to inform you that our city, Kamaishi city in Iwate Prefecture, will be hosting the Rugby World Cup games next year. The distance between Miyako and Kamaishi is approximately 52 kilometers, but will only take an hour if you use the Sanriku Expressway. The preparation work is steadily under way and we hope to welcome as many foreign visitors to the Sanriku region.
Once again, We draw on your advice fhat very best service for foreign visitors.

Best regards,

Deputy Manager Management Dept..akihiro kikuchi

We had an incredible two and a half days at this hotel. From Tokyo station, the total trip time was about 5 hours, but it was so worth it. Actually I can’t wait to go back.

We were three of us: me, my partner and dad. We booked two "Sea-side Japanese style rooms (in-room dinner)” and stayed for two nights. The view from both rooms was breathtaking, especially with autumn foliage. The room was spacious, and clean from edge to edge.

Their public bath is not hot spring, but there are both indoor and open air baths for each gender. They were spacious, clean and so relaxing. I enjoyed it several times during the stay.

Meals were amazing. Before booking rooms, I called them to find out if they could make vegan meals for my partner. Apparently, the executive chef said that wouldn’t be a problem at all, which made me VERY HAPPY and relieved because most of Japanese style hotels can’t accommodate vegan/vegetarian meals, which means vegan/vegetarian people can’t stay there. They set up a dining table with chairs for 3 of us in one guest room. Everything was beautifully decorated and SO DELICIOUS. My partner was also very happy about vegan food they prepared for him. Our server, Sato-san was incredible. She told us about interesting stories about the area.

Breakfast was buffet. I ate so much because there were a huge variety of Japanese food and they all were delicious! (There were not many choices of vegan food though.)

Some people who work at this hotel, like Sato-san, were on top of everything and committed to make the guest’s stay as best as possible. At the same time, there were some people who should improve quality of what they do. But overall, we received great service here.

I can’t wait to go back!

A high-priority is on group tours.
We were there on a day when a very large party too was there. The tour was organized by one of top largest travel agencies in Japan (hence seems to be at a deep discount) and, we think, the hotel was mostly occupied by the party. Only a fraction of rooms for the day were sold to individual customers.
The rates on the day for these individual customers looked nearly a little below double of normal rates for the season. It is quite reasonable to adjust the rates by season and big local events. However we have never experienced this type of rate adjustment, namely because of a large group on a day.
If you do not find any reasonable rates on a day you want to stay with this hotel, I would recommend you to stay away and visit Jodogahama or the beach by a car, if you travel with. There are large free parkings and, depending on a season, there should be a lot of vacancies.
We had known that the rate was abnormally high on the day but we had no way to change our itinerary and we didn’t know that such large parkings are available there, so that we took it.

The hotel has some room types. If you like to enjoy the beach view, chose “ocean side” but not “pine trees.” Though both of them are on the ocean side, you can really see only pine trees and sky but not the beach with “pine tree” rooms. The difference is not explicitly stated on the (Japanese) explanation.

It looked that the number of staff was not sufficient enough so that don’t expect higher hospitality and services.

Foods (morning buffet) were at an average or reasonable if we had paid a deemed normal charge for the season. It was below our expectation at the rate we really paid.

WiFi SSID is not protected by a password so that you need VPN, at least.

Anyway it was our fault.

Room tip: Check/compare the rates and the room profile carefully..

Thank you very much for your stay at Jodogahama Park Hotel.

About the room rates, depending on the season, weekend, operating status of the guestrooms during local events and such, the rates fluctuate on a daily basis, and we are sorry the room rate was not satisfactory to your needs.

In regards to the price settings for the guestrooms, we will keep reviewing them again to meet the expectations from our guests.

We are sorry that your expectations were not met in regards to the view.
We are located at the Sanriku Fukko National Park, and due to the fact that there are strict regulations concerning cutting down the trees, so we are in a difficult situation to do it right now.
We are operating together with the city and the prefecture sides, but there are still very many issues,
so we are not able to proceed currently.

We thank you for this very valuable opinion you have given us.

This was an amazing place. The hotel is located on a bluff right above the bay with a view from the landing on all floors of the islands and the water. Trails to the beach and the national park begin right at the hotel.

The hotel, itself is wonderful. The rooms are very large, by Japanese standards, with all of the amenities one could want. The bath is superb with both indoor and outdoor baths. The rotenburo is made of lava rock and is very relaxing.

The food was exceptional. There is a buffet that may be included with the room. We did not purchase that plan. The buffet looked excellent. We ate at the small restaurant downstairs. The sushi was some of the best that we have had in Japan and we live here. I would ask where the various fish were from and the waitress, who was exquisite, would point out to the bay. We ate at the breakfast buffet, which was both Japanese and western.

We will most definitely return.

Room tip: Ask for view side. Ask about including the dinner.

I stayed here only 1 night with my family in mid-March. I’ve stayed at many hotels in Japan but this place is the best unexplored region for me. Despite its access, our stay was so enjoyable that we highly recommend this hotel to pro-Japan travelers.

The lobby is luxurious and staff is kind and friendly (but they only speak a little English). Our room is Japanese-Style Room with sea view; we can enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the sea and sunrise. To my surprise, the diner buffet offers a variety of excellent Japanese cuisine. I especially liked crab and cooked rice with sea urchin, but all dishes were fresh and tasty.

In addition to special day in the hotel, you can enjoy “Jodogahama Beach” which is designated as a scenic spot of Japan and listed in the best 100 beaches in Japan. The vivid contrast of the white rocks and deep blue sea is memorable.

In their official web sites, they states that (Jodogahama park hotel) is the leading hotel in Northeast of Japan, and I agree with them. It’s worth visiting at least once.

Room tip: do choose sea-side room
