Stayed here to visit friends who live in the area. It is located in the center of town near a convenience store and a few restaurants. Kamaishi is a small fishing/industrial sort of town. It was hit by the 2011 tsunami, but the immediate area is intact. The rooms are pretty basic and clean. There is internet access but you will need a cable hook up. Amenities are pretty much consistent with a business hotel. The breakfast buffet is standard Japanese fare, with a mix of traditional Japanese breakfast foods and Western food choices, too. The beds in our 3 person room were all twin size, with a double consisting of 2 twins pushed together. The mattress and pillow were rather stiff. Pillows contain buckwheat. The staff are efficient and polite. This is more like a 3 star hotel, but considering all that the town has gone through and how wonderful the staff are, I give it an extra star.

No problems with our room as far as heating was concerned, a bit too warm at night and the window open a jar. This was November.

Good breakfast with good coffee. Parking is free if you get it into one of the slots behind the hotel. The backup car park isn't free but we always found space.

Beds were a bit short, so tailored for the shorter man. Don't expect to bring a friend back since the small beds would make it too cosy. As noted hard pillows, it's a style in some parts of Japan.

You need a portable router to take advantage of the free in room lan as is common in Japan. The speed was good.

Best to note that the town is an industrial town complete with it's own steel works puffing out smoke.

We stayed at the Sun Route on two very cold January nights. The beds and pillows were hard as stone which is often the case in Japanese hotels. The room was also quite cold and since one of the twin beds was right below the window, the cold hit the bed, so all in all not a good night sleep. The bathroom was very small but the size of the room was actually oke for Japanese standards. The restaurant is not that great (lunch at the Bay City hotel was better) and breakfast ends at 8:30 so no sleeping in. Of course no wifi. No minibar, no vending machine. But this is not Tokyo so one has to adjust expectations. The staff is very friendly. They ask if you want your room cleaned or whether you want it 'untouched'. The waiter of the restaurant has pictures of the 3.11 tsunami on his phone: when you see that and realize what the people here are dealing with, a hard, cold bed seems pretty trivial

The tsunami killed 800 in Kamaishi and devastated the hotel's neighborhood. The lobby was under 6 meters of water. Today, it's clean, no trace of damage in the lobby. Room was fine. The staff today was the staff then. They are a hell of a crew. Not much lodging in the area. Since all the competition is gone, this hotel was a bargain --- I had to drive 45 km. from Rikuzentakada to find a room anywhere. Breakfast included.
