This hotel is located outside of a smelly smoking hot (Hell) spring. From the window of the dining room one can view this weird sight. It is a hassle to get to Unzen. You can take the JR part way and then bus it or go by bus directly. The cost of the bus in not covered by the JR pass. We choose the bus (based on the recommendation from the hotel) - and the trip was worth it. The hotel has a great onsen - one indoor and one outdoor. The onsen water was hot with the smell of sulfur . The hotel, while not luxurious was very nice. We had a large room with western beds. Our rate included dinner and breakfast which you eat in a large dining room overlooking the lit up "hells". Both meals were enjoyable - dinner was all Japanese and breakfast was buffet, western and Japanese.
We received great service from the hotel and the reservation manager assisted in our transportation to the hotel. The hotel and Unzen was a real treat and if you are in the region should not be missed. No internet.
